Dan Hurley's squad won 22 of its first 23 games, the lone blemish being a loss to Arizona without second-leading scorer Tarris Reed Jr. The Huskies' nonconference schedule included neutral-site wins over Florida, Illinois, and BYU and a victory against Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse. The six-time national champs were well-positioned to secure a 1-seed, especially with a weaker Big East schedule on the horizon.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>But they've looked vulnerable of late as the defensive struggles that plagued them last season have resurfaced. The Huskies are 2-2 in their last four games, surrendering nearly 80 points per contest and allowing opponents to shoot 39.3% from deep. UConn's home loss to Creighton was the most alarming performance: The Bluejays averaged 1.21 points per possession, scored 30 points in the paint, and went 27-of-32 from the charity stripe. Several of the Huskies' perimeter players were in foul trouble and provided little resistance to Creighton's guards. The Bluejays penetrated the lane with ease and got a handful of clean 3-point looks.</p><p>All of UConn's early work toward a No. 1 seed might've gone down the drain with Wednesday's disappointing result. While the Huskies are ranked fourth in wins above bubble, they can't fall back on a strong conference to bolster their case for a top seed.</p><h3>
<a id="Duke/Michigan" name="Duke/Michigan">The battle</a> for No. 1 overall looms</h3><p>The national title game is still seven weeks away, but we might get a preview Saturday when Michigan faces Duke. We touched on the Wolverines' dominance below, and that was before they dusted Purdue on the road by double digits Tuesday. Dusty May's outfit is now the highest-rated team by KenPom since 1999. That '99 team? You guessed it: Duke.</p><p>No, these Blue Devils aren't at the same level as that squad, but they're getting pretty close. Duke ran Syracuse out of the gym Monday, pounding the Orange by 37 points to run its record to 24-2. Those two losses came by a combined four points. There's a significant amount of basketball left to be played, but it's not hyperbole to suggest the winner of Saturday's neutral-site contest in Washington, D.C., will be the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament.</p><h3>

The Red Raiders not only suffered an unlikely defeat at Arizona State but also lost star forward JT Toppin for the rest of the season due to a torn ACL. There's no sugarcoating it - Toppin's absence is brutal for a team that was fully capable of making a deep tournament run. The nation's ninth-leading scorer demonstrated his importance to the team during Saturday's incredible win at Arizona with a 31-point, 13-rebound effort.</p><p>The Red Raiders are still a dangerous group that can make noise down the stretch. However, Toppin is the only player on the roster who's taller than 6-foot-6 and played over 15 minutes a game. According to <a href="https://www.lubbockonline.com/story/sports/college/red-raiders/2026/02/18/jt-toppin-texas-tech-basketball-knee-injury-acl-march-madness-nba-draft/88743615007/">Nathan Giese of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal</a>, the junior had scored 48% of the team's points inside the arc this season and had accounted for 41% of its total rebounds. He was essentially Texas Tech's only interior presence. Now, it's up to sophomore forward Luke Bamgboye to fill some of those minutes.</p><h3>
<a id="Ohio State/Georgia" name="Ohio%20State/Georgia">Ohio State, Georgia</a> help bubble chances</h3><p>Bubble watch is in full swing, and Ohio State and Georgia both entered Tuesday right on the fence between being safe or missing out on the field. The Buckeyes throttled one of the hottest teams in the country, blowing out No. 24 Wisconsin at home for their first win over a ranked team in seven tries this year. Ohio State was among ESPN's first four teams out of the field in the latest <a href="https://x.com/ESPNLunardi/status/2023802902826168384?s=20">Bracketology</a>, lacking a big-time win to catch the attention of the tournament committee. Beating the Badgers without second-leading scorer John Mobley Jr. fixes that problem, especially after Wisconsin knocked off both Illinois and Michigan State last week.</p><p>Georgia's victory over Kentucky was even more significant because the Bulldogs almost never win at Rupp Arena. It had been 17 years since they left Lexington as winners, but the defense-optional Wildcats allowed Georgia's offense to do what it wanted en route to an 86-point showing. ESPN's BPI ranks the Bulldogs' remaining schedule as the SEC's easiest, so Georgia should feel good about its chances. On the other side, Kentucky faces the hardest remaining schedule in the conference, as four of the remaining five games are against Quadrant 1 opponents. Although it would take a pretty significant collapse for the Wildcats to miss out on the field, Big Blue Nation can't feel particularly great about this team at the moment.</p><h3>

Monday at home, the Big 12 program showed why that drought is likely about to end. Iowa State roared back from a 10-point deficit to close the game on a 17-4 run and beat No. 2 Houston in front of an electric crowd in Ames.</p><p>There's plenty to take away from the contest - including how quickly Nate Heise got the <a href="https://x.com/TopTierIowaSt/status/2023618986508779546?s=20">game-clinching triple off</a> - but Iowa State's ability to protect the ball against the swarming Cougars defense stands out. Kelvin Sampson's legendary career has been defined by hard-nosed defensive squads that put the opposition in hell, and this year's team is no different. Houston ranks 25th nationally, forcing 14 turnovers per game, but Iowa State had just three giveaways and none in the final 18 minutes.</p><p>The Cyclones and Cougars are current No. 2 seeds in <a href="https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/page/bracketology/ncaa-bracketology-2026-march-madness-men-field-predictions">ESPN's Bracketology</a> and are unquestionably serious threats to win the title. Monday's epic thriller also flexed the Big 12's strength with Arizona joining that pair in the top seven of <a href="https://kenpom.com/">KenPom</a>'s rankings.</p><h3>
<a id="Michigan" name="Michigan">Michigan</a>'s a wagon</h3><p>It's good to be king heading into the NCAA Tournament. A team with the No. 1 seed has won five of the last six national titles and 25 of 39 since the field expanded to 64. That's excellent news for fans of Michigan, as you can essentially write the Wolverines in pen on your bracket as a top seed.</p><p>Victory doesn't seem to be enough for Dusty May's program this season; domination and humiliation are held in higher esteem. The Wolverines have blown almost everybody off the court en route to a 24-1 start with a nation-leading scoring margin of 22.3 points per game. That includes nine wins by at least 30 points and 15 by 20 or more. The highlight was a five-game stretch that featured wins over San Diego State, Auburn, Gonzaga, Rutgers and Villanova by an average of 35.8 points.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

The national championship hangover hit like the first night at an all-inclusive resort with a 5-4 start. However, Todd Golden got some improved guard play and standout performances from Thomas Haugh and Rueben Chinyelu to right the ship.</p><p>The Gators have won 14 of their last 16 games and sit comfortably in first in the SEC. The latest indication that Florida might be fully back came in Saturday's comfortable nine-point win over Kentucky. The schedule is also quite friendly the rest of the way, with dates against Arkansas and the season-ending trip to Lexington representing the only ranked matchups.</p><h3>
<a id="A Class" name="A%20Class">A class</a> worth tanking for</h3><p>Just how good is the talent in college basketball this year? NBA commissioner Adam Silver has been forced to hit teams with <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3479019" href="https://thescore.com/news/3479019">tanking fines</a> for holding players out of games. The term "generational draft class" gets overused, but it absolutely fits this elite collection of players across college basketball.</p><p>Illinois' Keaton Wagler, BYU's AJ Dybantsa, Houston's Kingston Flemings, and Louisville's Mikel Brown Jr. have all put 40-point games on the board this season. Duke's Cam Boozer might be the best player in the country, and Kansas' Darryn Peterson - when he actually plays - is probably the top NBA prospect. Add Arizona's Brayden Burries to the mix, and most of the top teams in the country this year lean heavily on freshman production. The first is Miami of Ohio, a MAC program that also doubles as the only remaining undefeated team in the entire country. It's easy to think of the Hurricanes when talking about Miami, but Redhawks alumni will happily remind you that their beloved alma mater was a school before Florida was a state. The Redhawks have raced to a 25-0 record and have coach Travis Steele promising to wear a speedo on national television if they reach Selection Sunday still undefeated.</p><p>The story has been incredible, but Miami (Ohio) still likely needs to win the MAC Tournament and grab the conference's automatic bid to be safe for March Madness. That stems largely from a woefully weak schedule that ranks 312th in the country, according to KenPom. Simply put, the Redhawks have handled their business but also haven't played anybody of note.</p><p>While the analytics may hate the Redhawks, they absolutely love Saint Louis from the A-10 Conference. The Billikens are the only mid-major outside Gonzaga to hold top-40 KenPom rankings in both offense and defense. Their only loss on the season was a one-point setback to Stanford, and they trail only Michigan in average margin of victory this season at a whopping 21 points per game.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

However, Fred Hoiberg is pulling off a Curt Cignetti-level turnaround in Nebraska, putting the Cornhuskers seventh in the country with a 22-3 record. The three losses were all close ones against elite competition, with Michigan, Illinois, and Purdue eking out victories by a combined 15 points.</p><p>With four wins in the final six games, Hoiberg's outfit would break the program record for single-season victories before the Big Ten Tournament even begins. Nebraska is currently a 3-seed in ESPN's bracketology, setting the program up for its best chance to finally get that elusive tourney victory. <p>NBA commissioner Adam Silver informed all general managers Thursday that the league plans to institute rule changes to combat tanking next season, sources told <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/2024603443743379808?s=20">ESPN's Shams Charania</a>.</p><p>A competition committee meeting in late January and Thursday's gathering of the NBA's 30 GMs reportedly discussed several potential measures to solve tanking, <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/2024603693673271697?s=20">Charania</a> added.</p><p>The proposals reportedly included limiting first-round pick protections to top-four or top-14-plus protected; freezing the lottery odds at the trade deadline or a later date; flattening the odds for all lottery teams; adjusting the lottery odds based on a team's two-year record; and extending the draft lottery to include all play-in teams rather than half of them.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The WNBA currently bases teams' draft lottery odds on their cumulative record from the past two regular seasons.</p><p>The NBA and executives also reportedly discussed restricting teams from picking in the top four in consecutive years and preventing teams that reached the conference finals or better from selecting in the top four the following year.</p><p>Silver <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3479019" href="https://thescore.com/news/3479019">revealed</a> at NBA All-Star Weekend that a number of options were on the table in an attempt to curb tanking.</p><p>The league recently handed out hefty <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3477942" href="https://thescore.com/news/3477942">fines</a> to the Utah Jazz and Indiana Pacers for violating the player participation policy.</p>

"I don't know. I have no idea. I just want to live, that's all."</p><p>James is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. The 41-year-old has spent eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, leading the storied franchise to its most recent title in 2020.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>However, the Lakers have won just two playoff series since that championship run.</p><p>There's <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3461165" href="https://thescore.com/news/3461165">reportedly</a> been internal tension as well, with team governor and minority owner Jeanie Buss souring on James.</p><p>The Cleveland Cavaliers, with whom James has spent 11 years of his career, are <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3466169" href="https://thescore.com/news/3466169">apparently</a> open to bringing him back for a third stint if the four-time Finals MVP expresses a desire to return home next season.</p><p>Meanwhile, James says he's focused on the current campaign and getting on the same page as teammates <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/68198" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/68198">Luka Doncic</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/96101" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/96101">Austin Reaves</a> for the stretch run.</p><p>Injuries have limited the trio to just 10 games played together this season.</p><p>"I know that when we've played some of our best basketball of the season, we've looked very good," James said. "On the other side, when we've been terrible, we've looked disgusting. So, I think the most important (thing) is, if we can get healthy, how many minutes we could be on the floor, how much chemistry we can build with the sprint starting.</p><p>"You would hope that you can have the regular season and kind of build that cohesiveness and things of that nature, but I'm hoping that if we can get healthy that we can start to build that."</p>

However, he's missed the last nine games due to a calf strain and won't suit up for Sunday's All-Star Game.</p><p>Rivers <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3473589" href="https://thescore.com/news/3473589">said</a> recently that the team won't shut down Antetokounmpo despite Milwaukee sitting 12th in the Eastern Conference.</p>

<p>Dallas Mavericks owners Patrick Dumont and Miriam Adelson shut down the notion that they could sell the franchise just two years after buying a majority stake from Mark Cuban.</p><p>"The Dumont and Adelson families remain fully committed to the Dallas Mavericks franchise and to the Dallas community," a family spokesperson said in a statement to <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/mavericks/2026/02/11/dallas-mavericks-mark-cuban-buying-back-patrick-dumont-miriam-adelson-selling-team/">Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News</a>. "They remain focused on building a championship organization for the long term.</p><p>"The team is not for sale and the families look forward to expanding their ownership stake over time."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Cuban retained a 27% stake in the Mavs, but a provision in the sale agreement allows the Dumont and Adelson families to buy all but 7% of his shares within the first four years of their ownership, according to Townsend.</p><p>The Dumont and Adelson families have until December 2027 to exercise that option.</p><p>Cuban also gave up control of basketball operations soon after selling his majority stake.</p><p>An unidentified Dallas investor group is <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3475599" href="https://thescore.com/news/3475599">reportedly</a> interested in joining forces with Cuban to buy back the club. However, the businessman doesn't envision such a scenario unfolding in the near future.</p><p>"I get asked fairly often if I would be part of a group if they could buy the team," Cuban wrote Wednesday to Townsend. "I tell them all the same thing: I don't see them selling."</p>

Bickerstaff had no issues with how his players handled themselves.</p><p>"Our guys deal with a lot, but they're not the ones that initiated, they're not the ones who crossed the line tonight," Bickerstaff told reporters postgame, including <a href="https://apnews.com/article/pistons-hornets-fight-6a852a8902788c52ac2ac4a8d5ac9344">Steve Reed of The Associated Press</a>. "It was clear, through frustration, because of what J.D. (Duren) was doing, that they crossed the line. I hate that it got as ugly as it got.</p><p>"That's not something that you ever want to see," Bickerstaff added. "But if a guy throws a punch at you, you have a responsibility to protect yourself. That's what happened tonight. If you go back and watch the film, they're the ones who initiated crossing the line and our guy had to defend himself."</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/6332" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/6332">Tobias Harris</a> tried to descalate the situation, but Diabate still managed to throw a punch towards Duren as he was being held back by the Pistons veteran.</p><p>Diabate broke free shortly after but was separated by multiple coaches and teammates as he charged at Duren.</p><p>Bridges then had words for Duren and attempted to connect with a punch of his own.</p><p>The Hornets forward's actions prompted Stewart to rush in off the bench.</p><p>Bridges and Stewart exchanged punches as well before they were broken up by players and coaches.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

<p>An unidentified Dallas investor group is interested in partnering with Mark Cuban to purchase the Mavericks back from team governor Patrick Dumont, sources told <a href="https://x.com/TheSteinLine/status/2020981211816984834?s=20">NBA insider Marc Stein</a>.</p><p>"The family remains excited about the future of the franchise and the Cooper Flagg era," a source close to Dumont told Stein.</p><p>Cuban bought a majority stake in the Mavs for $285 million from real-estate mogul Ross Perot Jr. in January 2000.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Dallas became a perennial playoff contender under Cuban and broke through for their first NBA title in 2010-11.</p><p>Cuban sold his majority stake in the franchise to Miriam Adelson and Sivian and Patrick Dumont in December 2023 for approximately $3.5 billion.</p><p>He was reportedly expected to retain team control of all basketball operations but relinquished those responsibilities after selling his majority stake.</p><p>Cuban is currently a minority owner with a 27% share in the club.</p><p>Former Dallas president of basketball operations and general manager Nico Harrison executed the controversial trade of <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/68198" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/68198">Luka Doncic</a> in February 2025, with Patrick Dumont's approval.</p><p>Cuban has since taken responsibility for Doncic's departure, saying he "let people down by not being there."</p><p>The Mavericks fired Harrison in November 2025 following a 3-8 start to the 2025-26 campaign.</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/11373" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/11373">Anthony Davis</a>, the centerpiece of the Doncic trade, was moved to the Washington Wizards last Tuesday in a three-team deal involving the Charlotte Hornets.</p><p>Dallas sits 12th in the West and five games back of the Portland Trail Blazers for the conference's final play-in tournament spot.</p><p>The Mavs don't control their first-round draft picks between 2027-30.</p>
