<p>Los Angeles Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank agreed to a four-year contract extension with the club, sources told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7002640/2026/01/27/lawrence-frank-clippers-contract-extension-president-basketball-operations/?source=emp_shared_article">The Athletic's Joe Vardon and Sam Amick</a>.</p><p>The Clippers are also expected to extend other members of the front office, adds Vardon and Amick.</p><p>Frank joined the organization in 2014 following coaching stops at both the collegiate and pro levels. He was an assistant on Doc Rivers' staff for two seasons before being promoted to executive vice president of basketball operations.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Frank succeeded Rivers for his current role in August 2017, as Clippers owner Steve Ballmer wanted the latter to focus on coaching.</p><p>Los Angeles has enjoyed its greatest period of success under Frank's leadership, reaching the playoffs in six of the last eight seasons and making their first-ever Western Conference finals appearance in 2021.</p><p><span style="margin:0px; padding:0px; text-align:left">Frank was voted NBA Executive of the Year in 2020 after a mammoth offseason that included signing <a href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/4200" target="_blank">Kawhi Leonard</a> and acquiring <a href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/1889" target="_blank">Paul George</a>.</span></p><p>The Clippers have turned things around this campaign following a slow start, surging to 10th in the West after winning 15 of their past 18 games.</p>

<p>Steve Ballmer's attorneys are asking to dismiss a lawsuit claiming the Los Angeles Clippers owner participated in fraud by paying star <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/4200" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/4200">Kawhi Leonard</a> through defunct sustainability startup Aspiration, referring to the allegations as "sensational" and "patently false" in court documents obtained by <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/47630738/clippers-ballmer-aims-dismiss-fraud-suit-kawhi-leonard-pay">ESPN's Baxter Holmes</a>.</p><p>Eleven Aspiration investors initially filed a lawsuit in July 2025 against co-founder Joseph Sanberg and others at the company, alleging they were defrauded of millions. Ballmer was not originally listed as a defendant. </p><p>Aspiration filed for bankruptcy last March, and Sanberg agreed in August to plead guilty to defrauding investors and lenders of more than $248 million.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>However, subsequent reporting by journalist Pablo Torre suggested that Ballmer's $50-million investment in Aspiration was an attempt to circumvent the NBA's salary cap by paying Leonard through the third-party company. The investors subsequently filed a revised complaint in November that named Ballmer as a defendant.</p><p>"Plaintiffs would not have invested and/or kept their investment in (Aspiration) if Ballmer and Sanberg had disclosed the true nature of Ballmer's investment," the Nov. 3 complaint said, per Holmes. "Ballmer thus supported and participated in Sanberg's fraud."</p><p>Ballmer and the Clippers denied making illicit payments to Leonard, calling the allegations "absurd" and denying knowledge of any agreements between the two-time Finals MVP and Aspiration.</p><p>Ballmer added that he himself was "conned" by Aspiration and worked with the company under the impression it was a legitimate up-and-coming business.</p><p>"I understand that Mr. Ballmer and his attorneys deny our claims, but the facts speak for themselves and overwhelmingly support our case," one of the plaintiffs' attorneys, Skip Miller, told Holmes.</p><p>"They are laid out in detail in our lawsuit. I'm not going to repeat them here. We're going to litigate this case in court and not the press."</p><p>Ballmer's representatives asked for the case to be dismissed and asked the Los Angeles County Superior Court to determine the suit did not allege sufficient facts for a legal claim. A hearing is scheduled for March 9.</p>

She hired renowned biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan last summer in hopes of improving her biggest weaknesses. MacMillan is no stranger to reclamation projects, having helped Aryna Sabalenka with her own serving problems before she became a four-time major champion and the world's top-ranked player.</p><p>When Gauff hired MacMillan, she vocalized her desire to generate sustained success over short-term results. The American star had a full offseason to implement MacMillan's pointers and grow comfortable with the changes. In 2025, Gauff managed to win 48 matches, including a French Open title, en route to a third straight finish in the WTA's top three. If she can iron out her flaws, the sky's the limit.</p><p>Gauff had a 75% first-serve percentage and committed only four double-faults in her recent United Cup win over Iga Swiatek, her fourth consecutive straight-sets victory over the Polish star after dropping 11 of their first 12 meetings.</p><h3>Osaka's resurgence</h3><p>Naomi Osaka turned her 2025 season around when she brought on Tomasz Wiktorowski to replace Patrick Mouratoglou. Wiktorowski famously worked with former World No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska and guided Swiatek to four Grand Slam titles. It didn't take long for Osaka to reap the rewards, as she reached the National Bank Open final and US Open semifinal in her first two tournaments with Wiktorowski.</p><p>All seven of Osaka's titles have come on hard courts, including a pair of Australian Open trophies. Her raw power is tailor-made for the surface Down Under, and she seems to have regained the confidence that made her a consistent major threat. Wawrinka outlasted Djokovic in a five-set quarterfinal thriller at the 2014 Australian Open, ending the Serbian's major semifinal streak at 14. He then took down Nadal a few rounds later to capture his maiden major crown.</p><h3>1st-time major challengers</h3><p>A new season brings renewed hope for those chasing that elusive Grand Slam trophy. Keys finally got over the hump last year at Melbourne Park, saving a match point against Swiatek in the semis before upsetting Sabalenka in the championship match. Who are the top candidates this time around?</p><p>Alcaraz and Sinner have taken the torch from the Big Three, winning nine of the past 10 Grand Slams. Felix Auger-Aliassime has multiple wins over both players and was competitive in a four-set semifinal loss to Sinner at the 2025 US Open. Ben Shelton's best Grand Slam results have come in Australia. Three of his four major defeats during the previous campaign came at the hands of Alcaraz and Sinner. Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz has made a handful of deep major runs over the past two years and nearly forced a fifth set against Alcaraz in last year's Wimbledon semifinal.</p><p>On the women's side, Sabalenka, Swiatek, and Gauff have similarly seized control. Amanda Anisimova is perhaps the biggest threat to the status quo, as she owns a winning record against the trio and has been the runner-up at the last two Grand Slams. <p>Golden State Warriors forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/96094" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/96094">Jonathan Kuminga</a> demanded a trade Thursday, the day he became eligible to be moved, sources told <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/47619565/sources-jonathan-kuminga-demanding-trade-away-warriors">ESPN's Anthony Slater and Shams Charania</a>.</p><p>Kuminga couldn't be traded until Jan. 15 due to the two-year, $48.5-million contract he signed last September following an extended period of negotiations.</p><p>The structure of the deal further damaged Kuminga's relationship with Warriors management, Slater and Charania added. The former No. 7 overall pick reportedly wanted a player option on his new contract but received a team option instead.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Golden State head coach Steve Kerr, the team's veterans, and Kuminga agree that a trade before the Feb. 5 deadline would be best for all parties, sources told Slater and Charania.</p><p>Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. has explored the market for a trade partner, with the Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks among the teams reportedly expressing interest in the disgruntled forward.</p><p>The Los Angeles Lakers also have some interest in Kuminga, sources told <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6972965/2026/01/15/jonathan-kuminga-warriors-trade-deadline-nba/?source=emp_shared_article">The Athletic's Marcus Thompson II, Sam Amick, and Nick Friedell</a>.</p><p>Golden State is reportedly prioritizing expiring contracts in any trade package for Kuminga, per Slater and Charania.</p><p>Kuminga is averaging 11.8 points, 6.2 boards, and 2.6 assists across 18 games this season. However, the 23-year-old has completely fallen out of the Warriors' rotation, making just one nine-minute appearance over the last 17 contests.</p>

"Just be able to hoop in front of my family, friends, people I grew up with, people that raised me. It's a different feeling. So as much as people talk all the time, that's social media, that's what people's jobs are to talk. If you put all the money into just the backcourt, and then your flexibility is restricted going forward to fill out the rest of the team."</p><p>One of Reaves' agents approached Paul during halftime of Tuesday's contest and spoke for more than five minutes about the latter's podcast comments on the Lakers guard, sources told McMenamin.</p><p>James maintains that his relationship with Reaves hasn't changed.</p><p>"AR knows how I feel about him," James told McMenamin. "All you got to do is look at us on the bench. Me and AR talk every single day. So, AR knows how I feel about him, and I hope AR - or his camp - don't look at me and think this is words from me are coming through Rich.</p><p>"Rich has his perspective of what he sees, I have my perspective. "They've been supportive of me and my career. A lot of the things that I've accomplished in my career was in front of these fans. That's why this place is so special to me."</p><p>The 76ers re-signed Lowry to a one-year deal last offseason. The 39-year-old has made just six appearances for a total of 45 minutes.</p><p>Lowry's one of 12 players in NBA history to play at least 20 seasons. He's the Raptors' all-time leader in 3-point field goals (1,518), assists (4,277), steals (873), and triple-doubles (16).</p><p>Lowry hasn't confirmed that he'll be retiring at season's end, but he reiterated his desire to sign a one-day contract with Toronto when that time comes.</p>
