The 24-year-old has struggled to reproduce the magic that had him recognized as a surefire bet to be the Texans' long-term answer at quarterback. Instead, he's only gotten worse with some seriously inconsistent play and an ugly playoff performance earlier this year. Houston changed offensive coordinators last offseason, but it made no difference. Does head coach DeMeco Ryans have another solution? At the rate it's going, Stroud could become the franchise's latest what-if case.</p><h3>Indianapolis Colts</h3><p><strong>Did they lead themselves into a dead end?</strong></p><p>The Colts were locked into a competitive window the moment they traded two first-round picks for cornerback Sauce Gardner. As a result, the franchise almost has to attempt to re-sign quarterback Daniel Jones and receiver Alec Pierce. Pierce appears to be the safer gamble after recording a team-high 1,003 yards in 2025, but does it make sense for Indianapolis to pay him and Michael Pittman Jr.? The Colts could cut Pittman for cap savings, though it might be worth keeping him in win-now mode. Then there's Jones, who started brilliantly before tearing his Achilles. Even with a potential rebuild coming, there's no reason for Las Vegas to trade the pass-rusher, who will still be 29 when the 2026 season starts. Besides, look how quickly drafting well or finding a high-caliber quarterback can help shoot teams from the basement to contention - do the Patriots and Seahawks ring any bells? The best chance for the Raiders to get early returns on their Kubiak investment is to make sure their five-time Pro Bowler stays on the roster.</p><h3>Los Angeles Chargers</h3><p><strong>Can McDaniel take Herbert to the next level?</strong></p><p>The Chargers will get tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt back from injury, but the biggest catalyst for improvement for Herbert might be the new offensive coordinator. Mike McDaniel's quick-passing game has been shown to elevate quarterbacks and mask offensive line deficiencies, which will aid Justin Herbert after he was sacked a career-high 54 times last year. Entering his seventh season, Herbert is still chasing his first playoff win and the MVP-caliber campaign that many thought was possible when the Chargers drafted him sixth overall in 2020.</p><h3>Miami Dolphins</h3><p><strong>Will cutting Tagovailoa derail the offseason?</strong></p><p>The Dolphins already have over $50 million in dead cap after releasing Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb, and James Daniels, and Tua Tagovailoa might be next. The Super Bowl may have been a preview of the tests New England will face in 2026.</p><h3>New York Jets</h3><p><strong>What's their best option at quarterback?</strong></p><p>Head coach Aaron Glenn and the Jets are seeking a soft landing after the Justin Fields experiment. With Tyrod Taylor hitting free agency and Brady Cook having limited starting experience, the cupboard is bare. General manager Darren Mougey has said New York will exhaust every option at quarterback. The No. 2 overall pick in this spring's draft may provide the answer, but the Jets will likely explore free-agent and trade options before they're on the clock.</p><h3>Pittsburgh Steelers</h3><p><strong>What do they do if Rodgers doesn't return?</strong></p><p>Love it or hate it, it feels as if everything is falling into place for Aaron Rodgers to run it back. Still, the Steelers can't just bank on that. After all, Rodgers is known for stretching these things out in dramatic fashion. There needs to be a contingency plan in place, and it has to be better than Mason Rudolph or second-year pro Will Howard. Despite new head coach Mike McCarthy talking up Howard's potential, the fact remains that he's still a sixth-round pick who hasn't played a single preseason or regular-season snap.</p><h3>Tennessee Titans</h3><p><strong>What is Saleh's plan for improving the defense?</strong></p><p>Despite having former No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward, the Titans chose a defensive-minded head coach over one focused on offense. That says a lot about where this team perceives its major weakness. New head coach Robert Saleh has his work cut out for him, as Tennessee allowed 938 points over the last two seasons, the second-worst in the NFL. The Titans need to improve drastically at cornerback and edge rusher. Fortunately, Saleh will have plenty of resources to give the unit a makeover, holding the No. 4 overall pick and a league-high $104 million in <a href="https://overthecap.com/salary-cap-space">cap space</a>.</p>

Leave it to Fernando Alonso to suggest that even the team's chef could handle these cars due to the reduction in speed required at certain corners to manage the power unit's battery.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Alonso wasn't the only one to criticize the new regulations. Lewis Hamilton mentioned that the cars are more fun to drive but otherwise agreed with Alonso - which almost never happens - on the increased need to manage the electrical component of the power unit. "That's not what racing is about," Hamilton said. The seven-time champion also doubted that viewers will be able to digest all the new rules and changes, quipping that an academic degree is needed to understand them.</p><p>However, no one ripped the new regulations as much as Max Verstappen, who's never shy to make his opinion known. The Red Bull driver <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3477620" href="https://thescore.com/news/3477620">said</a> the new cars aren't fun to drive and compared the regulations to "Formula E on steroids."</p><blockquote><p>I don't know what else to do about it, you know. It isn't the original Formula 1 feeling any more.</p></blockquote><p>So, has F1 made a mistake with the increased focus on the electrical output of the engines? It's possible, but plenty of others, such as George Russell, are willing to give the new rules a chance. After all, these are some of the brightest engineering minds in motorsports. The grievances that are evident today may become minor nuisances in the months and years ahead.</p><p>What is for sure, though, is that this new era of racing is going to look and feel wildly different than any other before it.</p><h3>Mercedes may lose its fearsome silver bullet</h3><p>Much has been made of Mercedes allegedly exploiting a loophole that allows the German team to run a higher compression ratio when the engine is hot as a result of compliance tests only being conducted under ambient temperature. Whether Mercedes will be allowed to keep the advantage appears more uncertain than ever following the first tests in Bahrain.</p><p>Team boss Toto Wolff, who says he's received assurances from the FIA on the power unit, <a href="https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/13505839/f1-power-unit-dispute-toto-wolff-admits-rule-change-would-be-quite-damaging-to-mercedes-ahead-of-new-season">believes</a> his rivals were worried about being embarrassed and thus began lobbying the FIA. The governing body said earlier in February that it wants the matter resolved before the first race of the season.</p><p>Introducing new ways to test compression ratios would require four of the five engine manufacturers to vote for the change in addition to F1 management and the FIA. The initial stage likely won't be difficult with Ferrari, Audi, Honda, and Red Bull powertrains all wanting to stop their rival. That doesn't mean Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren are willing to admit it, though. Hiding pace is a tale as old as time in F1, and the mind games have clearly begun, as the four teams spent the week trying to avoid being labeled the early favorite.</p><p>Kimi Antonelli and Russell posted the fastest times of the week, but Mercedes claimed that Red Bull is the team to fear most because of its efficient electric motor. Russell even alleged the new power unit manufacturer had a "half a second to a second" advantage in terms of electric deployment per lap.</p><p>Verstappen accused Mercedes of using diversion tactics to cover its own advantage, telling Dutch media, including <a href="https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/mercedes-is-sandbagging-amid-f1-engine-row-max-verstappen-claims/10797274/">Autosport's Ronald Vording</a>, "Wait until Melbourne and see how much power (Mercedes will) suddenly find." Pierre Wache, Red Bull's technical director, upped the ante, slotting in his team as the fourth best currently.</p><p>McLaren's Andrea Stella said he'd put Ferrari and Mercedes at the top due to their lap times during a race simulation. And then there was Charles Leclerc, who placed Red Bull and Mercedes ahead of Ferrari on account of the former's impressive power unit and a belief that the latter is "hiding a lot more," per <a href="https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/charles-leclerc-verdict-ferrari-f1-2026-pecking-order/10797446/">Motorsport's Ben Vinel and Roberto Chinchero</a>.</p><p>No one wanted to leave Bahrain as the pack leader, but the top competitor can only hide for so long.</p><h3>Aston Martin nearly in crisis mode</h3><p>"Engine, balance, grip." </p><p>Yes, that's the blueprint for creating a good race car, but it's also the list of areas in which Aston Martin, according to Lance Stroll, has fallen behind.</p><p>That begs the question: Where exactly is the AMR26 up to par? Based on the Bahrain tests, the answer is probably "nowhere."</p><p>Aston Martin completed the fewest number of laps this week due to numerous problems, including a "data anomaly" with the new Honda power unit that deterred the team's opening day. Even when the AMR26 was on track, the car failed to put up a respectable lap time.</p><p>Stroll estimated that Aston Martin was roughly four seconds off the pace of the top teams, and he was right on the mark. The Silverstone-based team hasn't been afraid to admit that it's behind schedule, but that doesn't alleviate the shock that's come from this nightmarish start to the partnership between Alonso, Adrian Newey, and Honda.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

There, the team treated the shakedown as if the W17 was being taken on a test drive straight from the showroom. George Russell and Kimi Antonelli finished their programs without a hitch, both completing impressive long runs. However, the true test awaits in Bahrain, where Mercedes' general pace and potential advantage should be revealed. The Silver Arrows' performance could set the tone for public enthusiasm for the new regulations. From an entertainment standpoint, many hope it's not a repeat of the 2014 engine regulations, which led to Mercedes dominating in a class of its own.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><h3>Is there another contender that everyone has ignored?</h3><p>Mercedes this, Mercedes that. The Silver Arrows may have momentum, but there's nothing to suggest the other teams won't also nail the regulations - at least not until we get the data to confirm. A lot of eyes are on Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull to emerge as front-runners, but how about Aston Martin? Adrian Newey's outfit has attracted praise from around the paddock, including from George Russell and Williams team boss James Vowles. That's the great thing about new regulations. Every team starts from scratch with no pre-existing advantages. The answer is yes for most, but others are equally thrilled to see all the new cars and figure out what sets them apart. Recent photos from Barcelona reveal a wide variety of design choices, including suspension, sidepod shapes, and front and rear wings. With F1 championships being settled as much in the wind tunnel as they are on track, development is going to be a huge part in 2026. It's certainly possible that upgrades start flowing in for Bahrain testing, while the paddock might also get more answers about why teams made different choices, such as Aston Martin's rear suspension and Alpine's rear wing activation.</p><h3>What was F1 so afraid of? </h3><p>Fans will have to wait until the second round of preseason testing, Feb. 18-20, for the sessions to be broadcast from start to finish. Following a private shakedown in Barcelona that was restricted even to the media, only the final hour of each day will be broadcast during the first three-day test period in Bahrain. If F1 was feeling some anxiety over the reliability of the new regulations, the sport has done itself no favors with the over-the-top restrictions. It's on the broadcast screen. With the increased electrical power in this rule set, battery deployment will be more important than ever. If you're wondering why a driver just lost significant time compared to his previous lap, or why another car just effortlessly sailed past him, chances are it's due to battery deployment.</p><p>F1 said goodbye to DRS due to the introduction of active aerodynamics. Replacing DRS is the Overtake Mode, which provides additional electrical energy when a driver is within one second of a competitor at the detection point. There's also a boost mode and a recharge option. All three listed modes rely on the power unit's electrical output. It's crucial for F1 to display the battery level to users and for the broadcast to communicate these changes effectively. If it sounds like a lot to wrap your head around, it's because it is. Maybe a gradient red would've looked better. Although the R26 has the right colors and foundation to become a staple livery, it's perhaps a few evolutions away.</p><h3>7. If the Packers send Parsons to an NFC East team before the end of the 2026 season, they would have to send the Cowboys their 2028 first-round draft pick.</p><p>Parsons, a Penn State product and Pennsylvania native, recorded 12.5 sacks over 14 games in his first year with the Packers, though his season ended prematurely due to a torn ACL.</p>

Emmanwori appeared to be more of a question mark after suffering a low ankle sprain Wednesday. The rookie missed Thursday's practice but returned to practice in a full capacity Friday.</p><p>Seahawks quarterback <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/98048" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/98048">Sam Darnold</a> also isn't carrying an injury designation despite dealing with an oblique injury during the postseason. "Just turn off the pictures of the players and just look at the numbers. I feel like they speak for themselves. I don't need to argue that. <p>New Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur has made his first key hire, adding Nathaniel Hackett as his offensive coordinator, sources told <a href="https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/2019127250780844160?s=20">NFL Network's "The Insiders."</a></p><p>Hackett was <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/former-packers-jets-offensive-coordinator-nathaniel-hackett-being-hired-as-dolphins-qb-coach">reported</a> to be joining the Miami Dolphins as quarterbacks coach last week.</p><p>This marks Hackett's first offensive coordinator stint since his two-year spell with the New York Jets from 2023-24. The Jets brought him in to succeed LaFleur, who was fired after the offense struggled. During Hackett's tenure, the unit never ranked better than 24th in scoring.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The 46-year-old Hackett previously spent three seasons as the offensive coordinator under LaFleur's brother, Matt, in Green Bay from 2019-21. He enjoyed much success with the Packers as quarterback <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/747" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/747">Aaron Rodgers</a> won MVP in two of his three seasons.</p><p>Hackett spent the 2025 campaign as a defensive analyst for the Packers.</p>
