He probably wasn't alone.</p><p>Oscar Piastri, the world championship leader, was asked to swap positions with teammate Lando Norris after the latter had a slow pit stop at Monza. Piastri argued slow pit stops are part of racing before rather cordially surrendering his position. While McLaren might view it as correcting an unintended punishment, the team introduced a dangerous and frankly unnecessary precedent that will surely cause headaches in the future.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-conversation="none">

Fairness can be a slippery slope in that case.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>By definition, Norris' mechanical failure during the Dutch GP surely could be considered unfair. Should Piastri have pulled over after his title rival was knocked out?</p><p>There's also Hungary earlier this summer, when Norris was given an alternate strategy after a bad start and ended up winning. According to the law of fairness, should he not have traded places with Piastri, who appeared on course for victory before his teammate's unorthodox gamble?</p><p>With only 31 points separating Piastri and Norris in the drivers' championship now, there could be massive implications from McLaren's decision. The six-point swing from Sunday's swap could be the difference when the dust settles, creating a potentially messy situation over the last eight races.</p><p>McLaren's problems didn't start Sunday though. That was clear when the team referenced the infamous Hungary 2024 team orders saga on the radio in a bid to assure Piastri of its consistent decision-making.</p><p>But Monza wasn't like Hungary. Not at all.</p><p>There were conditions in Monza. Norris was told to pit but asked about Piastri going first, though he wanted a promise that he wouldn't be undercut. Unlike Hungary, there was at least an element of choice present this time around.</p><p>The only similarities between Sunday and the 2024 race at the Hungaroring is that the McLaren drivers had to deal with the consequences of a mistake neither of them made. A team should protect its drivers. McLaren has done the opposite, putting its pilots in the line of fire whenever something goes wrong operationally. In addition to Hungary, think of the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, where a lack of clarity over the team's racing rules led to Piastri's bold overtake costing Norris the lead.</p><p>Sunday was another example of mismanagement. The narrative coming out of Monza should've been about a costly pit stop error. However, Norris is being scrutinized for the team acting in his favor, while Piastri is facing questions about whether any other world champions – such as Verstappen – would've obliged to such a craven request. Both are uncomfortable conversations that could have been easily avoided.</p><p>This simply isn't the way a team hurtling toward a drivers' championship should be acting, but part of the problem likely stems from inexperience. McLaren hasn't won a drivers' title since 2008. And it hasn't dealt with two of its pilots fighting over the sport's top prize since Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton's nasty feud left them both empty-handed in 2007.</p><p>McLaren's intentions are in the right place. It wants to do right by both drivers. But the team sometimes gives off the impression that it cares more about maintaining an image of inner-team harmony than confronting a harsh reality. Motorsports aren't fair, and they definitely aren't equal. That hasn't stopped McLaren from trying to balance the scales of justice, though it's hard to fathom it being sustainable.</p>

In a season where Norris has been - sometimes unfairly - criticized and questioned for his mistakes and ability to handle pressure, it was Lady Luck who delivered the most impactful blow to his title chances.</p><p>Norris' championship chase may have quite literally gone up in smoke on Lap 65, as he was forced to retire due to a mechanical issue. The incident marked McLaren's first retirement caused solely by a mechanical gremlin since the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix, 60 races ago. It couldn't have come at a worse time.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The British driver was about one second behind race leader Oscar Piastri before his retirement. Now, he's 34 points back of the championship with nine race weekends to go.</p><p>History says Norris isn't dead yet. Sebastian Vettel overcame a 39-point deficit with seven races left to win the 2012 title. However, there were numerous contenders then. He qualified fourth ahead of all Mercedes and Ferrari cars. More shockingly, Hadjar then brilliantly defended his place from challengers Charles Leclerc and George Russell. The performance was already a contender for one of the best drives of the year, but Hadjar was rewarded with a promotion to a podium spot due to Norris' retirement.</p><p>Zandvoort added accolades to Hadjar's already impressive resume. The French youngster is one of only six drivers who haven't been eliminated in Q1 this season, joining both McLaren drivers, Leclerc, Russell, and Max Verstappen. Hadjar is the fifth-youngest driver in F1 history to stand on the podium. It probably won't be long until he's being discussed for a promotion to Red Bull.</p><h3>Kimi Antonelli is in a crisis</h3><p>Antonelli is in the midst of a spiral that appears to have no end in sight. His disastrous run hit a new low point in Zandvoort after he received multiple penalties, including one for taking out Leclerc with a lousy overtake on Lap 53.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

He's scored only one point over his last five races and just 16 points over his last nine. Fifteen of those points came from his podium in Montreal.</p><p>It might be time for Mercedes to ask how many more disasters can happen before the development of its prodigy is permanently affected. After the team and Hamilton made strides from Friday's practice through qualifying, it was looking like the exact weekend the British driver needed to start the second stage of the season on the right note.</p><p>There would be no redemption arc, though, thanks to a series of self-inflicted mistakes. Hamilton crashed at Turn 3, ending his race prematurely. He later got a five-place grid penalty for Monza for failing to slow under double yellow flags on the reconnaissance laps before Sunday's race. Hamilton hasn't scored points in two straight races, and 12 drivers have outscored him over the last three grand prix weekends (six points).</p><p>Hamilton was supposed to receive a hero's welcome on his first trip to Monza in Ferrari red. It won't quite be that, but all can be forgiven in the minds of the Tifosi with a positive showing. This could be a pivotal point in the Hamilton-Ferrari fairy tale.</p><h3>The racing guidelines lack common sense</h3><p>Carlos Sainz couldn't believe the FIA gave him a 10-second penalty for his role in a collision with Liam Lawson, <a href="https://x.com/F1/status/1962229077521150362?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1962229077521150362%7Ctwgr%5E20b0d92e180acc582ebfd479266db6dfa9475453%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcmsadmin.thescore.com%2Fadmin%2Fnewsroom%2Farticles%2F3335336">calling it</a> "the most ridiculous thing I've heard in my life."</p><p>The crash between the two drivers was the latest disconnect between the FIA's racing guidelines and the naked eye. It seemed clear that Lawson caused the collision by drifting wide at Turn 1. However, because the racing guidelines almost always favor the driver on the inside, the stewards <a href="https://x.com/fiadocsbot/status/1962166283572576548">deemed</a> Sainz at fault for attempting a move around the outside without his front axle being ahead.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

<p>Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard says <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/188125" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/188125">Anthony Richardson</a> won't be on the trade block despite <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/97984" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/97984">Daniel Jones</a> being chosen as the team's starting quarterback.</p><p>"We're not trading him," Ballard told reporters Wednesday, including <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46089177/colts-trade-anthony-richardson-gm-chris-ballard-says">ESPN's Stephen Holder</a>.</p><p>The topic of Richardson's future was amplified after his agent <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3328018" href="https://thescore.com/news/3328018">said</a> that trust between the 23-year-old passer and the franchise was "questionable" following the team's quarterback decision.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Richardson, who was drafted fourth overall in 2023, hasn't developed into the passer the Colts hoped for. He was benched for two games last season before regaining the starting job. </p><p>Engaged in another quarterback competition this preseason, Richardson lost the role to Jones, who signed with Indianapolis as a free agent in March.</p><p>Despite his setbacks, Ballard believes sitting behind Jones could do Richardson good. He mentioned that Jones was picked due to his ability to operate the line of scrimmage prior to the snap.</p><p>"There's a lot of value in sitting behind a guy that's a professional and watching and learning and growing and working on the things you need to work on without the same pressure of being the starter," Ballard explained.</p><p>The GM added that he still believes Richardson has the traits to be a franchise quarterback in the NFL.</p><p>"I think it's sure in him," Ballard said. "I do. I think it's in him. Whether that happens or not, we'll see."</p><p>Richardson completed just 47.7% of his passes for 1,814 yards and eight touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 2024.</p>
