</blockquote> <script async="" src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></figure><p>Sosa admitted to making mistakes during his playing career in December, helping to mend relations with the Cubs.</p><p>The former slugger was the subject of PED allegations but never publicly admitted to taking banned substances, leading to a frosty relationship with the team.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"People grow up," Sosa said Friday, per <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/43459085/sammy-sosa-derek-lee-elected-cubs-hall-fame">ESPN's Jesse Rogers</a>. "That's what happened to me. To give that statement out, it was the right time for me. The response right away was incredible."</p><p>Sosa played in Chicago from 1992-2004, hitting 545 home runs en route to becoming a seven-time All-Star and the 1998 NL MVP.</p><p>Lee wore a Cubs uniform for seven seasons, posting a .903 OPS with 179 home runs and 574 RBIs. His best season came in 2005 when he finished third in NL MVP voting after hitting 46 home runs with 50 doubles and 107 RBIs.</p>

Preller said, per <a href="https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/01/17/rolki-sasaki-chooses-dodgers-over-padres-blue-jays/">Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.</a> "We’ll move forward and look to add to a really talented roster."</p><p>The 23-year-old will only be eligible to receive a modest contract as a foreign pro under the age of 25 with less than six years of experience.</p><p>The former Chiba Lotte Marines star is moving to North America after a terrific four-season stint in Japan's top professional league. He owns a career 2.10 ERA with 11.5 K/9 across 64 appearances. He also posted a 3.52 ERA with 11 strikeouts across 7 2/3 innings for Japan at the 2023 World Baseball Classic.</p><p>Sasaki's signing bonus will be $6.5 million, a source told <a href="https://x.com/ByJackHarris/status/1880409621221040327">Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times</a>.</p><p>The Dodgers traded outfield prospect Dylan Campbell to the Philadelphia Phillies for international bonus pool space. The right-hander has experience pitching in the ninth inning and owns a career 11.8 K/9 in 350 appearances.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The signing of Leclerc is the latest move in a surprisingly active offseason for the Athletics. <p>The Roki Sasaki sweepstakes are down to three finalists - the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and Toronto Blue Jays. It's no surprise given the organization's 12-year run of success. To many observers, they're the favorite. But is L.A. the right fit for Sasaki?</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p><strong>Pros</strong></p><p>Let's get the obvious out of the way - it's the Dodgers. They're more than just the reigning World Series champions. This team is a star-studded machine. Over the last 12 seasons, the Dodgers won 11 division titles (and missed the 12th by one game), four pennants, and two championships. They're in a class of their own at the major-league level. Who wouldn't want to join them?</p><p>The Dodgers also offer committed ownership that will stop at nothing to field a winner and have a world-class player development system that continues to churn out impact prospects. Sasaki could become an even better pitcher under the Dodgers. Furthermore, the franchise boasts one of the sport's most iconic uniforms and offers a world-famous venue in a great city. And, as a bonus, he could make his big-league debut back home when the Dodgers open their 2025 season in Tokyo.</p><p>Sasaki can also find comfort in the clubhouse. The Dodgers' imprint in Japan is second to none, and he already has relationships with Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Having multiple people that speak his language would ease the transition of joining a new league and country.</p><p><strong>Cons</strong></p><p>Money is clearly not at the front of Sasaki's mind. He chose to forgo a potentially bigger payday at age 25 by coming over now. But of the three finalists, the Dodgers can only offer him a maximum of $8.1 million, the lowest maximum bonus among the three finalists. It's not the biggest factor going against L.A., but it's worth noting.</p><p>Then there's the injury factor. For all of their success developing pitchers, the Dodgers simply can't keep them healthy. Nearly every one of their most important starting pitchers last season, plus several of their prized youngsters, missed some or all of 2024 with injuries. Some of those injuries were shoulder and elbow ailments. Sasaki battled through an elbow issue in NPB last year, and he's a fragile young pitcher. Does he really want that kind of track record hanging over his head as a rookie?</p><p>L.A. also has a ton of starting pitchers. That might allow the team to limit Sasaki's innings and protect his arm, but it would come at the cost of experience. He'd also be joining a fully developed team with many established stars, including several big-name Japanese players that dwarf Sasaki's star power back home. With the Dodgers, he could merely be a cog in a well-oiled machine as opposed to his own unique brand of star elsewhere. The rivalry has blossomed since a postseason meeting in 2020, and the Dodgers have two World Series titles in that span, while the Padres are yet to punch a ticket to the Fall Classic. Luring Sasaki away from Los Angeles could shift momentum in the rivalry and turn the animosity up to 11.</p><p><strong>Pros</strong></p><p>San Diego is one of the most consistently underrated cities in the U.S., offering all the benefits of Southern California life without the spotlight and traffic of Los Angeles. Sasaki seems to be a quieter personality, and this should be a major selling point.</p><p>But while the Padres are a smaller-market team, they've been aggressive in their attempts to build a winner of late and have shown a willingness to spend. They've reached the playoffs three times this decade, have a core group of stars locked up long term, and are right in the middle of their competitive window. San Diego also has a great development program and is known for getting the best out of its prospects, especially pitchers. Pitching at friendly Petco Park also has to be a positive, as is the chance to be in the same rotation as Yu Darvish, his friend and idol.</p><p>While there's pressure to win now in San Diego, it's not a major media market. Sasaki could have the best of both worlds - a winning location coupled with anonymity - if he chooses San Diego.</p><p><strong>Cons</strong></p><p>As we already mentioned, the Dodgers have owned the NL West. The Padres, meanwhile, last claimed a division crown in 2006. That level of dominance narrows San Diego's path to the postseason, along with the chance for Sasaki to thrive under the bright lights of October and replicate Yamamoto's rookie season.</p><p>The Padres are also dealing with serious ownership uncertainty, as the widow of former owner Peter Seidler is filing a lawsuit against two of his brothers for control of the club. What can the franchise offer a pitcher of Sasaki's caliber?</p><p><strong>Pros</strong></p><p>If Sasaki's looking to forge his own path, there's no better opportunity than Toronto. We hear it all the time - the Blue Jays are the only MLB team that represents an entire country. Some might roll their eyes at that, but a number of players that signed with the club in recent years acknowledged a sense of pride.</p><p>Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker could be an intriguing X-factor as the team tries to sell Sasaki on the merits of joining them. Walker boasts a number of high-profile success stories in which he helped a pitcher unlock another level. Robbie Ray won the 2021 AL Cy Young in Toronto, and Kevin Gausman and Alek Manoah were finalists for the award in recent years.</p><p>Sasaki would also benefit from pitching in front of one of, if not the best, defensive clubs in baseball. The Blue Jays have won consecutive AL team Gold Glove awards and have two of the best defenders at their respective positions in center fielder Daulton Varsho and second baseman Andrés Giménez. That level of defensive insulation could be reassuring to Sasaki if he struggles to adjust during the huge transition from Japan to North America.</p><p>Sasaki should feel relatively confident that ownership will continue to spend in an effort to field a competitive team. The Blue Jays are consistently a top-10 payroll team in baseball, and they'll need to continue spending to keep pace in the AL East.</p><p><strong>Cons</strong></p><p>The Blue Jays own a concerning track record when it comes to developing pitchers and keeping them healthy. The club was hit by a rash of serious elbow or arm injuries to young hurlers over the past few years. Manoah, Ricky Tiedemann, Brandon Barriera, and Landon Maroudis all sustained serious injuries that required surgery within the last year, and that should be a point of concern for a pitcher like Sasaki, who's only eclipsed 100 innings twice in his young career. The track record of homegrown pitching success stories under Ross Atkins have been few and far between.</p><p>Sasaki and his representatives will likely have big questions about the roster in Toronto moving forward. The Blue Jays face the possibility of starting the 2026 season without both Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette, and the farm system is lacking in impact talent, leaving the franchise in a precarious position. It's hard to see Sasaki signing up for that level of uncertainty without some level of assurance for the Blue Jays' front office that alternatives will be lined up to ensure the team remains competitive.</p><p>Sasaki might also wonder about pitching in the AL East. The Yankees never accept losing, the Red Sox are on the upswing, and the Orioles are loaded with homegrown offensive talent. Throw in the Rays and their ability to put pressure on opposing pitchers, and it's easy to see why pitching in the AL East isn't the most appealing scenario.</p>

That's where the Blue Jays' front office finds itself with Guerrero. The opportunity to sign him to a long-term extension earlier in his career is gone, and the market is totally different after Juan Soto's contract. It's time to throw out whatever evaluation they had and just get a deal done.</p><p>The Blue Jays swung and missed on Shohei Ohtani. They swung and missed on Soto. They demonstrated they have the cash to pull it off, and you'd better believe Guerrero was watching it all unfold, likely asking himself why they aren't backing up the truck for him. Guerrero knows he has the upper hand at this point, and his side has played the negotiations well. He said earlier this winter that Toronto's offer wasn't close to what he wanted, and he has the court of public opinion on his side, even as he seeks close to $450 million, which would be the third-richest contract in MLB history. He's done, and said, all the right things to put pressure on the front office.</p><p>While history would say a first baseman is not worth that type of contract, baseball has changed in recent years; younger players are getting paid more. Guerrero will be entering his age-26 season in 2025, which is one of the main reasons why his value will be so high.</p><p>"The market is driven by different factors. To get a player, you have to pay a certain price," Red Sox president Sam Kennedy told <a href="https://x.com/NESN/status/1878109645828477197">NESN</a> on Saturday when speaking generally about free agency. "So, you didn't overpay, you paid what you need to pay to get the player."</p><p>Considering where the Blue Jays are at, there will be no overpay with Guerrero. It will be the cost of doing business. While Toronto would be bidding against itself right now, the cost could go even higher if he reaches free agency. We watched how this winter played out with Soto and how one aggressive owner can drive up the price to a previously unthinkable number.</p><p>The reality is, at this point, the Blue Jays need Guerrero more than Guerrero needs the Blue Jays.</p><p>Toronto is coming off a last-place finish in the AL East. The farm system ranks among the worst in baseball as this regime has traded away a lot of prospect capital while simultaneously struggling to develop talent to supplement the major-league club. The Blue Jays' reputation for failing to attract free agents is a bit of a misconception, but they've watched a number of key targets sign elsewhere in recent years. The most difficult thing to do in pro sports is to acquire star talent, so when you do, it's essential to do everything possible to keep them signed long term.</p><p>After spending over $300 million in renovations, the Blue Jays can't risk attendance taking a dive in upcoming years. This front office and ownership can't risk the reputation hit that would come with having Guerrero walk. Seeing Guerrero hit free agency and potentially sign with a division rival could cause irrevocable damage to the fan base. There will be no shortage of suitors next winter when Guerrero would headline the position-player class.</p><p>Baseball has no salary cap, and the Blue Jays have a lot of money coming off the books in upcoming years. They could comfortably absorb whatever extension Guerrero receives. He's been open about wanting to stay, and the fan base adores him. Is there significant risk involved? Of course there is. There's risk in every contract signed. But sometimes you have to roll the dice and hope it works in your favor. It's more a case of having a number in mind and a willingness to hold firm. This is the most prominent contract negotiation in the history of the franchise. Guerrero is a homegrown star that fans have been drawn to since he was signed as an international free agent in 2015. But he isn't without some flaws.</p><p>Guerrero has had two explosive offensive seasons during his career. If he could consistently approach that level of production for the remainder of his playing days, signing him long term would be the easiest decision a front office ever faced. However, the situation is a little bit more nuanced than that. Guerrero posted a 166 wRC+ in 2021 and a 165 wRC+ in 2024. He accompanied those two monster campaigns with fWARs of 6.3 and 5.5. Those are valuable figures at a position like first base that historically depresses a player's overall WAR as a result of defensive value. </script></figure><p>The market has certainly changed over time, but it's still notable that first basemen historically get less in free agency than other positions. Miguel Cabrera inked an eight-year, $248-million extension with the Detroit Tigers in 2014 at the age of 31. Albert Pujols joined the Los Angeles Angels on 10-year, $254-million deal ahead of his age-32 campaign in 2012. Guerrero's age makes the situation a different one, but it nonetheless complicates the idea of ponying up for somebody that isn't a five-tool player.</p><p>The Blue Jays are not in an enviable position. The farm system is thin, and even if Guerrero stays long term, the future doesn't look incredibly bright. However, that doesn't mean they should feel forced to give him an exorbitant contract. The Blue Jays should make their highest offer, and if Guerrero doesn't take it, test the trade waters and see what they turn up. The Blue Jays missed their chance to sign Guerrero for a lower number. <p>Boston Red Sox first baseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/12885" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/12885">Triston Casas</a> isn't losing sleep over seeing his named mentioned in trade rumors.</p><p>"I feel like that's part of the business of baseball is checking in on players, seeing what kind of value you can get back," Casas said Saturday, according to <a href="https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2025/01/red-sox-triston-casas-addresses-trade-rumors.html">MassLive's Christopher Smith</a>.</p><p>There's been speculation that Casas could be included in a package if the Red Sox make a move to acquire Gold Glove third baseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/2381" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/2381">Nolan Arenado</a> from the St. Louis Cardinals.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"You never know what kind of haul you can get for a player or how much another organization values somebody," Casas said. "So it might be in the best interest to move myself or anybody really if there's a good enough package. So I think checking in and other teams asking about me and whatever, I see it as a positive. Just that maybe somebody else sees value in myself as well."</p><p>Casas missed almost four months in 2024 after sustaining a rib injury early in the season. He finished the campaign with 13 home runs 32 RBIs, and a .799 OPS in 63 games.</p><p>The 24-year-old owns a career 125 OPS+ with 42 home runs and 109 RBIs since making his MLB debut in 2022. He's arbitration-eligible for the first time following the 2025 season.</p><p>Casas hopes to remain a member of the Red Sox for the rest of his career but understands trades are part of the game.</p><p>"I love the fans, and they welcome me generously all the time," Casas said of his experience in Boston. "So I would love to play the rest of my career here. But if it's elsewhere, I just feel like March 28 (Opening Day), no matter where it's at, I'm going to be playing major-league games. So just focus on that."</p>

The 30-year-old wanted to pitch in Arizona after building a home in the Phoenix area, and the Diamondbacks appear to have reaped the rewards. Burnes' addition gives manager Torrey Lovullo one of baseball's deepest and most talented starting rotations, which includes Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Brandon Pfaadt.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Burnes isn't quite as dominant as he once was, but he's as dependable as any pitcher in the league, making at least 32 starts and throwing at 193 innings in each of the past three seasons. Burnes handled life in the AL East with the Baltimore Orioles well, posting a 15-9 record with a 2.92 ERA and 8.4 K/9 in 2024. He even took a bit of a discount to return, inking a three-year, $66-million contract which reportedly contains more than $23 million in deferred money as well as a $23 million signing bonus. Keeping the term to three years for a player entering his age-32 campaign is a solid result for Los Angeles.</p><p>Hernández should continue to benefit from the luxury of hitting behind Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman. The 32-year-old went deep 33 times with 99 RBIs and earned the third Silver Slugger of his career. Baltimore general manager Mike Elias has signed two aging pitchers - Morton and Japanese right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano - in an effort to replace the gaping hole in the rotation left in Burnes' wake.</p><p>Morton remains a fairly dependable option after posting a 4.19 ERA with 167 strikeouts across 30 starts with the Atlanta Braves last season. The veteran right-hander made at least 30 starts in every full campaign since 2018, and reliable pitchers are always a desirable commodity on the free-agent market. However, Elias and the Orioles should've been thinking bigger than one-year deals. Baltimore is firmly in its window to win and only has so many years with the likes of Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman on affordable contracts. The soon-to-be 42-year-old struggled through shoulder and neck injuries and registered the worst ERA of his career since a two-game cameo in 2005 with the Detroit Tigers. Verlander's K/9 dropped to 7.4 in 2024, and he was left off the Astros' postseason roster after registering a 9.26 ERA in five September outings. But he's just one season removed from putting up a 3.31 ERA with seven wins in 11 starts.</p><p>Still, it's certainly fair to look at this version of Verlander and decide the nine-time All-Star doesn't have anything left in the tank as he gets set for the 20th season of his illustrious career. Rooker's a late bloomer, arbitration-eligible for the first time at age 30. The extension gives him some financial security and likely represents his best opportunity to cash in.</p><p>Rooker amassed 5.1 fWAR with a 164 wRC+, 39 home runs, and 112 RBIs last season. Anything approaching those numbers will make his $12-million annual salary a tremendous deal for the Athletics. Even if he settles into more of a two- or three-WAR player, the A's will still likely be thrilled if Rooker can crush 30 or more home runs. The deal will guarantee him $12.5 million with the Dodgers holding options for the 2028 and 2029 seasons. It's a fairly low-risk investment in a player who did nothing but hit during an impressive eight-year career in the KBO. Kim doesn't have much power, but the Dodgers have enough players who can hit the ball over the fence to compensate for that.</p><p>Los Angeles is likely hoping to slot Kim - who hit .326 and .335 in his past two campaigns with the Kiwoom Heroes - in at the bottom of the order to try and turn the lineup over the big bats of Ohtani, Betts, and Freeman. Lux never quite lived up to his considerable hype during five seasons in L.A. - the 27-year-old missed the entire 2023 season with a knee injury and finished his Dodgers tenure with a 96 OPS+ in 412 games.</p><p>Lux is currently projected to be the Reds' designated hitter with Matt McLain at second base and Jeimer Candelario at third base. He'll likely see playing time at multiple positions, including opportunities in the outfield. He owns an 8-5 record with a 2.28 ERA, 11 saves, and 12 K/9 since the start of the 2023 campaign. The Blue Jays needed more impact arms to help boost a bullpen that finished 2024 29th in ERA and strikeouts. Hoffman is a huge upgrade. </p><p>The only reason the grade isn't higher is because of some concern about Hoffman's shoulder. The Baltimore Orioles reportedly had a three-year, $40-million contract in place before seeing something in the physical that led to the deal falling apart. There's always risk associated with signing pitchers, but it's still one a team like the Blue Jays should be taking.</p>

The Phillies are loaded and the Mets got Juan Soto, but the Braves are the most complete team in the division. Better injury luck is all this group needs to get back on track.</p><h3><a id="chc" name="chc">Chicago Cubs</a></h3><p><strong>Kyle Tucker arrives as promised:</strong> The Cubs shocked the baseball world by winning the Tucker trade sweepstakes. The outfielder was playing at an MVP level in 2024 before a leg injury sidelined him for several months. He still accrued a staggering 4.2 fWAR in just 78 games for the Astros with 23 home runs and a .993 OPS (181 OPS+). If he manages another campaign of 30 home runs with 60 stolen bases and the Reds rise in the standings, De La Cruz should be squarely in the mix to become the Reds' first MVP since Joey Votto in 2010.</p><h3><a id="col" name="col">Colorado Rockies</a></h3><p><strong>The NL's worst record again:</strong> Colorado lost an NL-high 101 games last season and could be even worse in 2025. The team lacks a star to build around. The Rockies teams of yesteryear used to offset poor pitching with lineups full of thumpers, but this current squad doesn't have any. Kris Bryant's hit just 17 home runs in the three seasons since he signed a $182-million contract. It doesn't look as though the dark ages will end any time soon.</p><h3><a id="lad" name="lad">Los Angeles Dodgers</a></h3><p><strong>Another World Series title: </strong>Somehow, the reigning champions enter 2025 looking even better on paper. The acquisition of Blake Snell gives the Dodgers another ace in a starting rotation that Shohei Ohtani is expected to rejoin. The lineup, which still features Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Teoscar Hernández, will be even better with the addition of Michael Conforto and a full season of Tommy Edman. The Dodgers are a juggernaut; the dawn of a dynasty is upon us.</p><h3><a id="mia" name="mia">Miami Marlins</a></h3><p><strong>Xavier Edwards wins batting title: </strong>Edwards has raked at every stop of his professional career. The 25-year-old hit an impressive .328 last season and owns a .321 career average over his first 100 MLB games. Edwards boasts excellent contact skills and does a good job of avoiding strikeouts. He checks a lot of the boxes for a batting champion.</p><h3><a id="mil" name="mil">Milwaukee Brewers</a></h3><p><strong>No sophomore slump for Jackson Chourio: </strong>The league will do its best to adjust to Chourio, and it won't matter. He broke out in the second half last year en route to a 20-20 season as a 20-year-old rookie. Then, during his first taste of postseason action, he slashed .455/.500/.1000 with two home runs and a stolen base. The notoriously frugal Brewers locked him up on an eight-year, $82-million deal before he even reached the major leagues for good reason. Chourio is here to stay.</p><h3><a id="nym" name="nym">New York Mets</a></h3><p><strong>Juan Soto is worth every penny:</strong> Paying a defensively challenged corner outfielder more than $50 million per season may not look smart on paper, but Soto warrants the price tag. He slugged a career-high 41 home runs in 2024 while walking more than he struck out. Few hitters assert their dominance over opposing pitchers the way he does. Soto is primed to buck the recent trend of players disappointing in the first year of their megadeals and will lead the Mets back to the playoffs with another amazing season.</p><h3><a id="phi" name="phi">Philadelphia Phillies</a></h3><p><strong>Zack Wheeler wins the Cy Young: </strong>In 2024, Wheeler finished as the runner-up for the honor for the second time in four seasons. Chris Sale, who won, offers proof that great pitchers eventually get rewarded - and Wheeler is unquestionably one of them. He recorded an NL-best 0.96 WHIP and 6.3 hits per nine with a 2.57 ERA in 200 innings last season. He's seemingly a lock to make 30 starts, pitch deep into games, and rack up strikeouts. His counting stats were down across 102 games in 2024, but his .833 OPS (130 OPS+) suggests the talent is still there. The Cardinals appear to be a team in transition, making them more likely to stick with Walker even if he struggles out of the gate in 2025. The 22-year-old showed flashes of his potential in 2023 and has the raw skills to be a prolific power hitter if he can get the ball in the air more often.</p><h3><a id="wsh" name="wsh">Washington Nationals</a></h3><p><strong>More offensive fireworks: </strong>The Nationals enter the season with a lot of buzz and momentum. General manager Mike Rizzo added proven veteran hitters Nathaniel Lowe and Josh Bell to complement a young core headlined by CJ Abrams, Dylan Crews, and James Wood. Washington's talented lineup should be able to make life tough for opposing pitchers. After finishing the 2024 campaign 29th in home runs and 25th in runs scored, the Nationals should be much higher in those categories at the end of 2025.</p>

Expect him to break out now that he has valuable reps under his belt.</p><h3><a id="bos" name="bos">Boston Red Sox</a></h3><p><strong>A 20-20 season from Trevor Story: </strong>Story has played just 163 games over three seasons since signing a six-year, $140-million contract with the Red Sox. It's hard to know what version of Story the Red Sox will get after a shoulder injury limited him to just 26 contests. He's only entering his age-32 campaign, so there should still be some quality production left if he can stay healthy.</p><h3><a id="cws" name="cws">Chicago White Sox</a></h3><p><strong>Another 115-loss season: </strong>The White Sox somehow look worse on paper heading into 2025 than they did last year when they lost an MLB-record 121 games. The starting rotation no longer has Garrett Crochet, and Luis Robert Jr. is no sure bet to stay healthy. Some good luck here and there might help Chicago avoid breaking its own dubious record, but another historically bad season feels inevitable.</p><h3><a id="cle" name="cle">Cleveland Guardians</a></h3><p><strong>José Ramírez wins AL MVP: </strong>MLB's most underappreciated star is long overdue to win the highest individual honor. Ramírez somehow finished just fifth in voting despite falling one home run shy of a 40-40 season in 2024. It was his seventh appearance in the top 10 over the last nine years. Ramírez stands a good chance to finally be recognized as the AL's most valuable player barring another historic season from Aaron Judge.</p><h3><a id="det" name="det">Detroit Tigers</a></h3><p><strong>No postseason repeat:</strong> The Tigers struggled for much of 2024 before sneaking into the playoffs on a red-hot Cinderella run. Unfortunately, Detroit hasn't done much to establish itself as a true contender this offseason beyond adding Gleyber Torres on a one-year deal. The starting rotation lacks depth behind Tarik Skubal, and the lineup is thin on impact bats. Everything will need to go right for the Tigers to be playing October baseball in 2025.</p><h3><a id="hou" name="hou">Houston Astros</a></h3><p><strong>Yordan Alvarez hits 40 home runs: </strong>Alvarez has been one of baseball's premier power threats since arriving in 2019 but has never eclipsed the 40-home run plateau. He's hit at least 30 in four straight years, however, and will need to be extra aggressive with Kyle Tucker gone. He did, however, regress in base-stealing, as his total dropped from 49 in 2023 to just 31 while being caught 12 times. The 24-year-old nonetheless ranked in the 100th percentile in sprint speed and should reach the 50-steal mark for the first time next year - he might even swipe 60.</p><h3><a id="laa" name="laa">Los Angeles Angels</a></h3><p><strong>80 wins: </strong>The Angels haven't reached the 80-win mark since 2018 and haven't posted a winning record since 2015. General manager Perry Minasian was aggressive in the early part of the offseason, acquiring Jorge Soler, Travis d'Arnaud, Yusei Kikuchi, and Kyle Hendricks to bolster the roster. A healthy season for Mike Trout would be a big help, but the Angels still have the talent to put together a better-than-expected 2025 season.</p><h3><a id="min" name="min">Minnesota Twins</a></h3><p><strong>Carlos Correa gets traded: </strong>All parties shut down the idea of a trade this offseason, but what about when the losses start piling up? The Twins have followed up a second-half collapse by making no moves, rarely a recipe for success. Correa is a proven winner who may grow frustrated if Minnesota falls out of the race by the deadline. The front office, meanwhile, is always looking to shred payroll.</p><h3><a id="nyy" name="nyy">New York Yankees</a></h3><p><strong>Another World Series run: </strong>The Yankees still appear to be the class of the American League, even after losing Juan Soto in free agency. There's an argument to be made that New York is actually a more complete team heading into 2025 after the additions of Max Fried, Devin Williams, and Cody Bellinger. The AL pennant is the Yankees' to lose, as MLB's true juggernauts reside in the National League.</p><h3><a id="sea" name="sea">Seattle Mariners</a></h3><p><strong>Luis Castillo gets dealt for hitting: </strong>The<strong> r</strong>ight-hander has been the subject of trade rumors at various points this offseason. The 32-year-old is signed for another three seasons at a reasonable salary and remains a solid starting pitcher. The 21-year-old has prodigious power potential with Steamer projecting 29 home runs, 91 RBIs, and a 122 wRC+ in 2025. The Rays are sorely lacking middle-of-the-order thump, and Caminero looks poised to assume that role this season.</p><h3><a id="tex" name="tex">Texas Rangers</a></h3><p><strong>AL West champions: </strong>The Rangers are primed to bounce back after a disappointing 2024 campaign. Joc Pederson predicted the Astros' reign atop the division "will come to an end" in 2025. Houston has won seven of the last eight AL West titles but appear to be in a state of flux. Texas' roster looks more balanced and should be able to overtake the Astros if relatively healthy.</p><h3><a id="tor" name="tor">Toronto Blue Jays</a></h3><p><strong>Ross Atkins and John Schneider get fired: </strong>The Blue Jays enter 2025 on very shaky ground. The club finished in the AL East basement in 2024 and face the realistic prospect of losing both Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette for a fraction of their true value. The farm system is thin and the roster is lacking in impact talent. With the AL East as competitive as ever, a slow start to the 2025 campaign will cost both general manager Atkins and manager Schneider as the Blue Jays try to settle on a new direction for the future.</p>
