<p>The Kansas City Chiefs are tabling contract negotiations with offensive guard <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/161967" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/161967">Trey Smith</a> until after the 2025 NFL Draft.</p><p>"Hopefully we get that done. There's no lack of interest or will or desire on our end," general manager Brett Veach said Thursday, per <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/chiefs-gm-brett-veach-no-secret-we-want-to-get-trey-smith-locked-up-long-term">NFL.com's Kevin Patra</a>. "There's no secret there that we'd like to get Trey locked up."</p><p>Smith has developed into a reliable piece of Kansas City's offensive line after being drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 draft. The Tennessee product has started 67 regular season games and 13 postseason contests through four seasons. The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Smith in February, making him the highest-paid guard in the league with a one-year deal worth $23.4 million. Both sides have until July 15 to work out a multi-year extension, at which point Smith will have to play out next season on a one-year tender.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Kansas City is focused on fortifying its offensive line after losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. Offensive guard <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/52828" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/52828">Joe Thuney</a> slid over to left tackle to help protect the blindside of quarterback <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/89514" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/89514">Patrick Mahomes</a> before being traded to the Chicago Bears this offseason.</p><p>Veach identified the offensive line as one of the Chiefs' top needs ahead of the draft despite signing offensive tackle <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/162087" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/162087">Jaylon Moore</a> and having <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/108380" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/108380">Jawaan Taylor</a> under contract for two more seasons.</p><p>"I think, obviously, any chance that you have to draft a guy that can project to be a starting left tackle, you do that," Veach said, per <a href="https://www.kansascity.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/sam-mcdowell/article304442486.html">The Kansas City Star's Sam McDowell</a>. "They're really hard to come by."</p><p>Veach also noted that <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/173980" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/173980">George Karlaftis</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/173979" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/173979">Trent McDuffie</a> could potentially land an extension this offseason. While the Chiefs can pick up the fifth-year options on both Karlaftis and McDuffie's contracts for the 2026 season before the May 1 deadline, they're prioritizing new deals for both players.</p><p>"Once this (draft) process ends, we'll be in discussions with Trey, trying to get him done, and then I'm sure at some point here (with) George and Trent," Veach said, per Patra.</p><p>The Chiefs hold eight selections in the NFL draft, including the No. 31 overall pick, and have not ruled out trading out of the first round after giving first-round grades to only 12 to 13 prospects.</p><p>"I know that I've shown to be more aggressive, but I'm certainly open to (trading back)," Veach said, according to <a href="https://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/article304429116.html">The Kansas City Star's Jesse Newell</a>. "And if it makes sense for us, and we can acquire additional picks, yeah, I'd be all for it."</p>

<p>Jake Paul has lined up his next fight.</p><p>Paul is set to face former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in a cruiserweight bout June 28 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Most Valuable Promotions told <a href="https://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_/id/44732270/jake-paul-face-former-champion-julio-cesar-chavez-jr-june-28">ESPN's Andreas Hale</a>.</p><p>The 10-round fight will be broadcast on DAZN pay-per-view and will be co-promoted by MVP and Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy promotions. </p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"Five years ago, I stepped into the ring for my pro debut after a single amateur fight, and every fight since has been a step towards becoming world champion. I just defeated the baddest man on the planet, and now I'm going against a former champion who conman Canelo couldn't finish," Jake Paul said in a statement.</p><p>Paul's had a tough time finding his next opponent ever since defeating 58-year-old ex-heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in November. The YouTuber-turned-boxer appeared to have reached a deal to face superstar fighter Canelo Álvarez, only to have the reigning super-middleweight champion close a multi-fight deal with Riyadh Season instead. He was also <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3246575" href="https://thescore.com/news/3246575">reportedly</a> in talks with Gervonta Davis about an exhibition fight before "Tank" faced Lamont Roach Jr. in March.</p><p>"The Problem Child" owns a 11-1 record as a professional, with seven of those victories coming via knockout. Paul's lone loss came in a split-decision defeat against Tommy Fury in February 2023.</p><p>Chavez, 39, held the WBC middleweight title from 2011-12 and successfully defended that belt three times. He owns a lifetime record of 54-6-1 with one no-contest and 34 knockout victories.</p><p>The Mexico native's most recent fight was a six-round unanimous win over ex-MMA star Uriah Hall this past July, a bout that was on the undercard of Paul's tilt against Mike Perry. However, that win was Chavez's first fight in three years.</p><p>"First of all, I will show what I can do now that everything is in the right place in my life - mentally and physically," Chavez said. "I feel rejuvenated and 10 years younger. Second, I want to thank MVP for taking the risk of fighting me. Unfortunately for their 'Problem Child,' they're going to have a big problem this June - one they won't know how to resolve."</p><p>The co-main event will feature unified cruiserweight champion Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez (47-1) defending his titles against former champion Yuniel Dorticos (27-2).</p>

<p>A clash between welterweight standouts Vicente Luque and Kevin Holland is being added to UFC 316 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on June 7, the promotion announced Friday. </p><p>Luque (23-10-1) will step into the Octagon for the first time since securing a first-round submission win over Themba Gorimbo at UFC 310 last December. The 33-year-old was able to rebound from a TKO loss to Joaquin Buckley in March 2024. </p><p>Luque was scheduled to fight Nick Diaz on two separate occasions in 2024, but Diaz withdrew from both contests. </p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The 33-year-old enjoyed a four-fight win streak that included wins over Randy Brown and Michael Chiesa between 2020 and 2021. In 2022, Luque dropped back-to-back bouts to Belal Muhammad and Geoff Neal.</p><p>Holland (27-13, 1 NC) continues to be one of the more active fighters in the promotion. The 32-year-old veteran will take on his third fight in 2025 after being submitted by middleweight Reinier de Ridder in January. He was able to bounce back after returning to the 170-pound competition by scoring a unanimous decision win over Gunnar Nelson in March. </p><p>The clash of welterweights joins an impressive card that includes a fight for the women's bantamweight title between challenger Kayla Harrison and champion Julianna Pena. The main event will feature a rematch between Sean O'Malley and Merab Dvalishvili for the UFC's bantamweight title.</p><p>The June 7 card will also feature a ranked matchup between top-10 bantamweight contenders Marlon Vera and Mario Bautista. <p>Head coach Mike Norvell says he's intent on guiding Florida State to a bounce-back campaign after his program staggered to a 2-10 record in 2024.</p><p>"You don't ever want to waste the experience. Last year was an awful year to have to go through and some of those experiences to have to live through," Norvell said on "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgaaq6NlJHo&amp;t=579s">Josh Pate's College Football Show</a>."</p><p>"But you do get to reflect. You do get to apply the lessons that are learned."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Seminoles fell off a steep cliff last season after posting a 13-1 record and winning the ACC championship in 2023. Last year's two wins marked the fewest in the program's history, dating back to 1974. FSU has compiled a 33-27 record across five seasons under Norvell.</p><p>Florida State's sideline boss partially attributed the squad's poor record last year to missing out on several key transfer portal additions. The Seminoles finished 132nd out of 134 FBS teams with 270.3 offensive yards per game while struggling to find consistency. The pair reunite after Norvell was Malzahn's graduate assistant at Tulsa in 2007 when Malzahn was the offensive coordinator. </p><p>"There's not many people in the country that I would have had the comfort, the peace, that would have fit the way that this does," Norvell said about working with Malzahn again.</p><p>Norvell added that there's a renewed sense of excitement within the program as the Seminoles embrace a "fresh start."</p><p>"From December, January, all the things that we've done, it's about this team going to be the best that it can," Norvell said. "I don't want to be a team that hopes for it. I want to be a team that, every step along the way, our actions are pushing toward the desired result. You got to earn that."</p><p>Florida State opens its season against Alabama on Aug. 30.</p>

Neither Sayin nor Kienholz saw significant snaps during the campaign.</p><p>However, Day brushed off any notion of feeling nervous about naming a starter in a race that's being compared to Ohio State's positional battle between Dwayne Haskins and Joe Burrow in 2018.</p><p>"It's nerve-wracking when you don't have a quarterback," Day said. "It's a good problem when you have a room full of quarterbacks."</p><p>While Day didn't answer whether he envisioned the competition lingering into fall camp, he said one of the signal-callers would need to perform well in the final practices to secure the starting role.</p><p>"Somebody would have to make a significant move here on Tuesday and or Saturday to really make that move to jump ahead," Day said.</p>
