<p>The Toronto Maple Leafs entered the NHL trade deadline as sellers for the first time in many years, and general manager Brad Treliving is holding himself accountable for the direction that the team is headed.</p><p>"I'll take responsibility," Treliving told media, including <a href="https://x.com/Sportsnet/status/2030043883929817443?s=20">Sportsnet</a>, following Friday's deadline. "We met earlier in the year - through about the 20-game mark - where we got off to a slow start. The failures here start with me. And once we get through the end of the season, there'll be all sorts of evaluation. But to start parsing through it right now ... we've got games to play."</p><p>The Leafs are in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign. Toronto, which is 27-25-11 with 65 points, currently sits seventh in the Atlantic Division and eight points back of the final wild-card spot.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Leafs wound up shipping out three forwards ahead of the deadline and acquired a handful of draft picks in exchange.</p><figure class="article-segment--table"><div class="table-responsive"><table>

The right-hander was shipped out for a conditional first-rounder and a third-round pick.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Carlson debuted with the Capitals during the 2009-10 season as Ovechkin, who was named captain that year, was in the midst of his fifth campaign in the NHL. Both players were instrumental in the team's 2017-18 Stanley Cup victory.</p><p>The 36-year-old ends his Capitals career with 166 goals and 605 assists over 1,143 games. He's the franchise leader in goals, assists, points, and games played by a defenseman.</p>

Phelps claimed 23 golds during his storied career.</p><p>The Norwegian team of Klaebo and Einar Hedegart crossed the line 1.4 seconds ahead of the American duo of Ben Ogden and Gus Schumacher, who claimed silver. Italy's Elia Barp and Federico Pellegrino won bronze.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"It's obviously very satisfying to make this happen," Klaebo said, according to <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3480920" href="https://thescore.com/news/3480920">The Associated Press</a>. Team Jacobs has two round-robin matches remaining - one against Italy and another versus Norway - which may influence seeding.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Canadian men's team was part of a controversy early in the Olympics, as the Swedish team <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3480529" href="https://thescore.com/news/3480529">accused</a> Jacobs' third/vice skip, Marc Kennedy, of double-touching stones. Team Sweden, the defending Olympic men's champions, has since been eliminated from playoff contention.</p><p>Jacobs and Kennedy are part of a four-man team with Ben Hebert as well as Brett Gallant, who competed in mixed doubles curling with his partner, Jocelyn Peterman. The pair finished fifth, outside of a playoff spot.</p><p>The men's semifinals are scheduled for Thursday at 1:05 p.m. ET.</p><p>Four of the 10 teams will move on to the playoffs following round-robin play. <p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wolymhm/players/1002" href="https://thescore.com/wolymhm/players/1002">Sidney Crosby</a> has been named captain of the Canadian men's hockey team for the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, the organization announced Sunday.</p><p>Edmonton Oilers star <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wolymhm/players/4560" href="https://thescore.com/wolymhm/players/4560">Connor McDavid</a> and Colorado Avalanche defenseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wolymhm/players/8539" href="https://thescore.com/wolymhm/players/8539">Cale Makar</a> will serve as alternates.</p><p>"I am grateful for the opportunity to represent Canada at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games, and it is an honor to be named captain of Canada's men's hockey team, which has so many great players and leaders," Crosby said in a <a href="https://x.com/TeamCanada/status/2020513112664006682">statement</a>.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Crosby also captained Canada's victorious 4 Nations Face-Off squad last year. This will be the fourth consecutive best-on-best international tournament in which the 38-year-old has worn the "C" for his country.</p><p>However, the Pittsburgh Penguins superstar hasn't acted as Canada's captain in the Olympics since Sochi 2014, the last year NHL players were permitted to compete at the Winter Games. </p><p>He led that team to gold, and also played for the 2010 squad in Vancouver, scoring the golden goal against the United States.</p><p>Crosby is in the midst of his 21st NHL season, all with the Penguins. He has 27 goals and 32 assists for 59 points through 56 games. The three-time Cup winner surpassed Mario Lemieux in career points earlier this year to become the all-time franchise leader.</p><p>McDavid and Makar were alternates in last year's 4 Nations Face-Off as well.</p><p>The 29-year-old McDavid is a three-time Hart Trophy winner and leads the NHL this season with 96 points in 58 games played.</p><p>Makar, 27, is a two-time Norris Trophy winner as the league's best defenseman. He has 15 goals and 42 assists for the NHL-leading Avalanche.</p><p>Canada opens its tournament in Italy on Feb. 12 against Czechia.</p>

<p>The Canadian women's hockey team beat Switzerland 4-0 in its Olympic opener at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games on Saturday.</p><p>The defending Olympic champs had the beginning of their tournament delayed when Finland couldn't play Thursday due to a stomach virus.</p><p>Finland lost its opener against Team USA earlier Saturday.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>While Canada won handily and outshot its opponent 55-6, the hockey powerhouse had trouble getting on the board.</p><p>Natalie Spooner, playing in her fourth Olympics, eventually opened the scoring midway through the second period.</p><p>Canada's 1-0 lead persisted until the third period when Sarah Fillier added some insurance.</p><p>Brianne Jenner contributed a power-play goal, and Daryl Watts tacked on the final tally in her Olympic debut.</p><p>Swiss goaltender Saskia Maurer was credited with 51 saves in the loss.</p><p>On Monday, Canada is scheduled to play Czechia, which has lost its first two games, including an overtime defeat to the Swiss on Friday.</p>

<p>Valerie Maltais won bronze in women's 3,000m long track speedskating to secure Canada's first medal of the 2026 Milan Cortina Games on Saturday.</p><p>This is Maltais' third Olympic medal but her first in an individual event after claiming gold in team pursuit during the 2022 Games in Beijing and silver in the 3,000m team relay in 2014.</p><p>The 35-year-old is competing in her fifth Olympics.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"I felt confident (racing) and feel relief and really emotional right now," Maltais told <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winter/speed-skating/olympics-long-track-speed-skating-women-3000-final-9.7078983">Doug Harrison of CBC Sports</a>, adding that this will likely be her final Olympics. <p>Mikael Kingsbury and Marielle Thompson have been named Team Canada's Olympic flag bearers for the Milan Cortina Games, the Canadian Olympic Committee announced Wednesday.</p><p>Kingsbury is a freestyle skier who will be competing in his fourth Olympic Games. The 33-year-old won gold in men's moguls during the 2018 Games in PyeongChang. He also captured silver in the event in 2014 and 2022.</p><p>"I had goosebumps when I heard that I was going to be a flag bearer," Kingsbury told <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/winter/kingsbury-thompson-flag-bearers-canada-milano-cortina-olympics-9.7063893">CBC's Devin Heroux</a>. "One of the best honors in my life. Very proud."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Thompson will also be participating in her fourth Olympics. The 33-year-old freestyle skier specializes in ski cross, winning gold at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. She also claimed silver in Beijing in 2022.</p><p>The opening ceremony for the 2026 Games is set for Feb. 6.</p>

<p>The Chicago White Sox and right-handed reliever <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/9732" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/9732">Seranthony Domínguez</a> agreed to a two-year, $20-million contract, sources told <a href="https://x.com/JeffPassan/status/2014761844359962735?s=20">ESPN's Jeff Passan</a>.</p><p>Domínguez, 31, authored a 3.16 ERA and 3.47 FIP over 67 appearances between the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays last year.</p><p>He's expected to close for the White Sox, Passan adds.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Domínguez has primarily worked in high-leverage, non-closing roles as a reliever. However, he has racked up 40 saves over seven seasons.</p><p>The White Sox will be Domínguez's fourth organization since he became a major leaguer in 2018.</p><p>The veteran possesses a 3.50 ERA and 3.78 FIP over 306 career innings while making 322 appearances. His 30.3% strikeout rate ranked 25th among qualified relievers last year. However, his 13.8% walk rate also ranked sixth worst.</p><p> </p>
