LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — Charley Hoffman and Rico Hoey both shot 9-under 63 on the Nicklaus Tournament Course to share the lead Friday after two rounds at The American Express.
Hoffman and Hoey were at 16-under 128 midway through this three-course tournament in the Coachella Valley desert, although both Southern California natives have yet to play PGA West's tougher Pete Day Stadium Course. They were a shot ahead of Justin Lower, Mark Hubbard and Sepp Straka. Jason Day and J.J. Spaun were 14 under.
Rickie Fowler charged into contention with 10 birdies and a second-round 62 on the Nicklaus, moving him even with Justin Thomas and <a href="https://apnews.com/article/nick-taylor-sony-open-nico-echavarria-pga-tour-c56f3908935098ebfd79799406390466">Sony Open champion Nick Taylor</a> at 13-under 131. Patrick Cantlay, Will Zalatoris and Doug Ghim were 12 under.

The 48-year-old Hoffman won his first <a href="https://apnews.com/hub/golf">PGA Tour</a> title at this event back in 2007, back when it was still called the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. He charged into the lead this week with an eventful second round featuring two bogeys and two eagles.
Hoffman hasn't won since 2016, but he is feeling healthy after years of back trouble, including two fragmented disks. He is determined to make the most of his remaining time on tour.
“The competition is fun,” Hoffman said. “I like walking down the fairways and guys are like, ‘How old are you?’ (I say) ‘I’m 48,’ and they sort of give you a look, like, what, you’re 48 out here still playing? And in this day and age when <a href="https://apnews.com/article/pga-tour-top-100-exempt-ee12141ad0ee3d73f1e601863c9dd4e7">we’re going to 100 players now</a>, guys playing at 48 on the PGA Tour is a thing of the past. I don’t think you’re going to see that much longer on the PGA Tour. But I’m going to try to battle out here as long as I can.”
Hoey, who grew up 80 miles away in Rancho Cucamonga and starred at the University of Southern California, is chasing his first victory in his second full year on the PGA Tour. He has been playing courses around Palm Springs since he was 5 years old, and the Nicklaus is one of his favorites.
“I played a lot of junior events out here, so just feels like I’m home,” Hoey said. “It’s great. Weather is awesome, so we don’t really have too many tough conditions with the wind and whatnot. Made it a lot easier to score. ... I’m still kind of starstruck with a lot of those guys, Hoffman, Cantlay, Rickie and whatnot. For me, it’s really cool just to put my name out there and just keep up with them, so that’s all I’m trying to do."

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A sexual assault complaint has been filed against Florida men’s basketball assistant Taurean Green while the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/todd-golden-florida-gators-sexual-harassment-8d23e656e643a80a718929cbe44cede3">university continues to investigate head coach Todd Golden</a> for alleged Title IX violations.
ESPN reported Thursday that an employee of the university’s athletics department formally filed the complaint with the school's Title IX office two days earlier. The woman agreed to meet Green in March 2024 on campus, where Green kissed her and tried to put his hand down her pants, according to a copy of the complaint reviewed by ESPN.
The woman, who requested anonymity for fear of retaliation, pulled Green’s hand away, said no and left. She told ESPN she had never been alone with Green previously and had only exchanged casual greetings with him on campus.

The woman said she did not report the alleged incident at the time in part because of Green’s status. Green, who won NCAA championships as a player with the Gators in 2006 and 2007, joined the basketball staff in 2022 following a professional basketball career.
The woman told ESPN she came forward after Title IX investigators working on the Golden case asked to interview her last fall about Golden’s interactions with female athletes. She said that inquiry made her realize there could be concerns about a pattern of behavior.
She told ESPN she first reported her allegations in mid-December to Florida deputy athletics director Amy Meyers Hass.
The university is still investigating a Sept. 27 Title IX complaint against Golden that includes allegations of sexual exploitation, sexual harassment and stalking, according to copies of the complaint.
The complaint accuses Golden of sending photos and videos of his genitalia, making unwanted sexual advances on Instagram and requesting sexual favors.
Title IX is designed to protect students from discrimination, including sexual harassment. Florida outsources its Title IX investigations to Grand River Solutions, a private firm based in California.
Golden initially signed a six-year, $18 million contract to take over at Florida and agreed to a two-year extension in March 2024 that will keep him at Florida through the 2029-30 season. His contract prohibits “romantic, amorous and/or sexual relationships between any coach or other employee of the Association and any student athlete or other person subject to the supervision, control and/or authority of such coach or other employee.”
The contract also says the university can take disciplinary action if the coach acts in a manner “that has an ‘adverse effect’ or causes an ‘adverse reflection,’ on the reputation, mission and/or interests” of the athletic department or the university.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California has signed defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn to a contract extension after his strong debut season with the Trojans.
USC didn't disclose details of Lynn's new deal in its announcement Thursday night, but the extension should end talk of Lynn's possible departure for other jobs.
The Trojans' defense improved sharply in its first season under the 35-year-old Lynn, who was hired away from crosstown rival UCLA a year ago.

With a simplified defensive scheme and a renewed emphasis on aggressive play, USC gave up 10.3 fewer points per game and 55 fewer yards per game under Lynn than it allowed in the 2023 season under coordinator Alex Grinch, who was fired late in the year by Lincoln Riley.
The Trojans improved their run defense substantially under Lynn while allowing more than 30 points in regulation only once all season. They even recorded their first shutout victory in 13 years, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/usc-utah-state-score-trojans-4642507476cf42e6b02e1bb573d03fc1">beating Utah State 48-0</a>.
Lynn was a starting cornerback at Penn State before he began a coaching career in 2014. He spent nine seasons as an assistant in the NFL, including one year on staff of his father, Anthony Lynn, with the Los Angeles Chargers.
He was immediately successful in his first season as a coordinator, building the top-ranked defense in the Pac-12 at UCLA. Another standout rebuilding job at USC made him a popular candidate in rumors about a big-money move to other top schools or even back to the NFL, particularly after USC finished <a href="https://apnews.com/article/southern-california-usc-texas-am-score-las-vegas-bowl-7ec75f0c8350b06184d8ebeacae811c6">another disappointing season under Riley</a> at 7-6 despite its markedly improved defense.
Penn State was widely thought to be interested in luring Lynn back to his alma mater this week after its defensive coordinator, Tom Allen, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/clemson-tom-allen-11704cc256336fcc1863e9861dbc2d89">left for the same job at Clemson</a> on Tuesday.
