(AP) — Palmeiras benefited from an own goal by Al-Ahly's Wessam Abou Ali and secured a 2-0 win on a shot by Jose Lopez before thunderstorms stalled play in the Club World Cup match at Met Life Stadium on Thursday.Both the Brazilian Palmeiras and Egyptian Al-Ahly clubs had opportunities after the restart from a 30-minute weather delay, but Al-Ahly could not overcome its defensive struggles.Abou Ali headed the ball into his own net just minutes into the second half. The goal started an offensive surge for Palmeiras, which broke away in the 59th minute for Lopez's goal. He kicked a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom right corner, with an assist from Mauricio.<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>Weather delayed the match a couple of minutes later. <a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-rashee-rice-knee-surgery-3d20c604c5b6005e253ee355cd2cd1b7">Rice is coming off a torn ACL</a> that limited him to four games last season, while <a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-nfl-draft-2025-84c95863e6f9f72d8d71606677285c89">Simmons tore a patellar tendon last season</a> with Ohio State, which likely caused the left tackle's draft stock to slide far enough for the Chiefs to pick him No. 32 overall.
“I think they're both ready to go,” Reid said after putting his players through a final conditioning test Thursday, which wrapped up three days of mandatory minicamp. “They actually got great work in these camps here.”

The Chiefs had hoped that Rice would become the centerpiece of a revamped offense last season, and he was trending that way with 24 catches for 288 yards and two TDs through three games. But early in the fourth, after Patrick Mahomes had thrown an interception, the QB collided with Rice as they were trying to make a tackle in a game against the Chargers.
The injury wound up being devastating for Kansas City, which had already lost No. 2 wide receiver Marquise Brown to a shoulder injury on the first play of the preseason, which ultimately kept him out until the stretch run.
The Chiefs wound up relying more heavily than they would have liked on then-first-round pick Xavier Worthy, who emerged as a breakout star. He led Chiefs wide receivers with 59 catches for 638 yards and all players with six TD receptions.
Now, Rice and Brown are healthy again, and a more experienced Worthy suddenly gives Kansas City three top wide receivers. And with the return of <a href="https://apnews.com/article/travis-kelce-kansas-city-chiefs-76e795fb9e896e69e82d4bc6af1eef60">a trimmed-down tight end Travis Kelce</a> for his 13th season in the NFL, the Chiefs believe the pieces are in place to push their formerly high-flying offense back among the best in the NFL.
“That's the goal. You want to be the top offense in the league when you step in the building every day. But at the end of the day, you want to win the Super Bowl,” Mahomes said. “Our goal is to do whatever we can to win the football game, and hopefully for us, that's being the top offense to go with the defense we have.”
Simmons could play a big part in that, and not just because he is 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds.
The Chiefs struggled mightily at left tackle last season, where second-round pick Kingsley Suamataia was benched and second-year pro Wanya Morris fared little better. The Chiefs eventually resorted to pushing standout left guard Joe Thuney to tackle and using Mike Caliendo in his place at guard, but they likewise struggled in their Super Bowl loss to the Eagles.
The Chiefs traded Thuney to the Bears earlier in the offseason, a move made largely for financial reasons. That opened up a spot at guard, and Caliendo and Suamataia are expected to compete for that starting role once training camp begins.
As for left tackle, Reid seemed to indicate that Simmons would be his preferred choice to lock down the job.
“Listen, you can see his athletic ability. You can see his want-to,” Reid said. "He approached everything the right way, plus a little extra. You can look at his rehab and he had a mindset of, ‘I’m going to get in there. It's not going to be training camp. It's going to be now.' He worked his tail off to get in there, and you respect that part. He's done a nice job in there. 
“We'll see,” Reid added. “We'll see what training camp does to him. It's different when things are flying up there.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Travis Kelce said the decision to return for his 13th season with the Kansas City Chiefs wasn't much of a decision at all.
In fact, the four-time All-Pro tight end indicated Wednesday that No. 14 isn't out of the question.
“I got one year on this contract, I know that. And we'll try to figure out something for next year,” Kelce said after the second day of the Chiefs' mandatory three-day minicamp, which was moved partially indoors because of lightning in the area.

“The Chiefs organization knows how much I love them. I can't see myself playing anywhere else," Kelce continued. “We'll deal with (2026) down the road, when the time is right. But right now, I'm focused on winning a championship this year.”
The question of whether the 35-year-old would hang up his cleats was among the biggest to follow the Chiefs' lopsided loss to the Eagles in the Super Bowl. While he still played at a high level last season, Kelce's production dipped noticeably — 97 catches for 823 yards and just three touchdowns for a team that won 15 regular-season games.
Throw in Kelce's myriad business interests, including a successful media career thanks in part to his popular podcast, and a long-term relationship with pop superstar Taylor Swift, and it made sense to wonder how much longer he would play.
Yet it only took a matter of weeks for Kelce to decide to chase another championship.
Part of it was the way last season's run had ended. Kelce had a throwback game in the divisional round against Houston with seven catches for 117 yards, but he only had four for 39 in the 40-22 loss to the Eagles in the Super Bowl.
“Really didn't feel like it was my last game. Just felt like I had a lot more to prove,” he said. “Yeah, you want to let the emotions die down; you don't want to make a decision off initial emotions. Once they died down, I felt like I still had that fire in my chest to come in and keep building and chase another Super Bowl, man.”
The Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl despite playing most of the season without their top two wide receivers, Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown, both of whom are fully healthy now after their injuries. They also made it despite massive issues at left tackle, which the Chiefs hope to have solved by drafting Ohio State standout Josh Simmons in the first round.
Now, they have a motivated — and noticeably slimmer — Kelce back at tight end. There were reports that he had dropped about 25 pounds since the end of last season, though Kelce insisted that may have been an exaggeration.
“Don't believe all you read on the internet, guys. I'm down some weight from the end of last season — last year — but each year is different, man. You have to rebuild it,” he said. “This year, I had some time to really focus on some form running and some things early in the offseason that I didn't have time for last year. Certainly feeling good and I think it'll pay off.”
Patrick Mahomes certainly hopes so. After leading one of the NFL's most productive offenses early in his career, Mahomes has struggled to get the Chiefs on track the past couple of seasons, largely because of injuries and offensive line trouble.
Still, the Chiefs' star quarterback said he never put any pressure on Kelce to return for another season.
“I think you have in the back of your mind, for anybody that's played a lot of seasons, there's always the chance if they're going to come back and put in the work," Mahomes said. “For him, I think it was just recalibrating, seeing where he was at, and from what I've seen, he's ready to go. He's put in the work this offseason and he's excited to make another run at it.”
The Chiefs wrap up their three-day minicamp on Thursday, then break for about a month, before reuniting at Missouri Western State University for training camp. And while the thought of spending a few weeks living in college dorm rooms probably doesn't sound very enticing to Kelce, the prospect of starting another championship run there clearly drives him.
“I love this game. It's still my childhood dream,” Kelce said. “When I really thought about it this offseason, I got back to wanting to focus on this game and getting the most out of this game as I can, while I'm still putting on the cleats and pads. This will always be No. 1 in terms of my business world and career path.”

HALLE, Germany (AP) — Alexander Zverev and an umpire helped out with ice after a spectator was struck by a falling advertising board during his match at the Halle grass-court tournament Wednesday.The board fell from the upper tier of the stadium into the crowd on the lower tier near the end of the first set and struck a 62-year-old female spectator from the local area, organizers said, adding that Zverev and umpire Renaud Lichtenstein rushed over with ice to treat her.Organizers said the spectator was able to leave the venue by herself, holding an ice pack provided by Zverev to her neck. She was later taken to a hospital as a precaution, they added.<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>"Something like this has never happened in the 32-year history of our tournament. We deeply regret the incident," tournament director Ralf Weber said.The tournament said that Weber met with the spectator in the event's medical center and gave her a free pass for next year's tournament.A statement from two event managers, Udo Kleine und Uwe Greipel-Dominik, on the tournament website suggested that screws holding the board in place might have come loose because of "drumming against the boards."They added that nearby boards were checked before the match continued and that plans were in place to check all other boards at that court.It didn't stop Zverev from racing to a 6-2, 6-1 win over American Marcos Giron in the first round of the tournament, a warm-up for Wimbledon. It continued the German player's strong form on grass after he was the runner-up in Stuttgart last week.Also Wednesday at Halle, third-seeded Daniil Medvedev won 6-2, 7-5 over Quentin Halys and eighth-seeded Karen Khachanov won 7-5, 6-3 against Zizou Bergs in the first round. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Pacers are preparing for the possibility of not having Tyrese Haliburton available to play in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, coach Rick Carlisle said in a radio interview on Wednesday morning.Haliburton has been dealing with a lower right leg injury throughout the series and it worsened during Monday’s Game 5 loss in Indianapolis. Haliburton played through it for most of his 34 minutes, but failed to make a field goal in the game and Indiana lost to Oklahoma City 120-109 — falling behind 3-2 in the title series.Now facing a win-or-else scenario, there is a chance Haliburton does not play in Game 6 on Thursday.<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>“He is going to be carefully evaluated over the next 36 hours and will likely be listed as questionable on the injury report and probably will be a game-time decision for Game 6,” Carlisle said on Indianapolis radio station 107.5 The Fan.Haliburton, part of the team that won Olympic gold in Paris for USA Basketball last year, was undergoing evaluation Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury. Part of that evaluation was an MRI exam, according to a person with knowledge of the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because neither Haliburton nor the team revealed that publicly. ESPN first reported that an MRI was scheduled.After Game 5, Carlisle did not specifically say that the MRI would be part of the team’s next moves in figuring out how best to proceed with Haliburton, though made clear that the Eastern Conference champions would be taking a close look at the injury. (AP) — Wehiwa Aloy drove in Arkansas’ first three runs with a homer and triple, Zach Root bounced back from a rocky start to pitch five strong innings, and the Razorbacks eliminated the Bruins from the College World Series with a 7-3 victory Tuesday night.Arkansas (50-14) will play SEC rival LSU on Wednesday night and would have to beat the Tigers twice in two days to advance to the best-of-three CWS finals. LSU won two of three against the Razorbacks in the regular season and beat them 4-1 in a CWS opener last Saturday.As good as Root was, Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn was most encouraged by his offense starting to come out of its shell. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Spire Motorsports fined Carson Hocevar $50,000 on Tuesday for derogatory comments he made about Mexico City on a live stream as NASCAR raced there last weekend. Hocevar walked back the comments Sunday night with an apology and the 22-year-old admitted it was the first time he'd ever been outside the United States and believed all the negative things he'd read and heard about Mexico City.“I am embarrassed by my comments," he posted in a lengthy apology.<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>Spire also ordered Hocevar to attend cultural-sensitivity and bias-awareness training.Spire said the $50,000 fine will be donated in equal portions to three organizations that serve Mexican communities:— Cruz Roja Mexicana (Mexican Red Cross). — Un Kilo de Ayuda, a nonprofit combating childhood malnutrition and supporting early-childhood development in rural communities.— Fondo Unido México (United Way Mexico), which funds local NGOs that improve education, health, and housing in 22 Mexican states.“These actions are consistent with Spire Motorsports’ core value of RESPECT, which is something we proudly display on every race car, team uniform, trackside hauler, and digital channel,” the team said in a statement. “Respect is not a slogan. It is a daily expectation that we ‘walk the walk’ in how we speak, compete, and serve the communities that welcome our sport.“Carson Hocevar’s recent comments made during the livestream fell short of that standard. They did not represent the views of Spire Motorsports, our partners, or NASCAR. He has acknowledged his mistake publicly, and his prompt, sincere apology demonstrated personal accountability. We now take this additional step to underscore that words carry weight, and respect must be lived out loud.”Spire said it informed NASCAR of Hocevar's penalties and that it satisfied the sanctioning body’s requirements. “Together we remain committed to showcasing NASCAR’s global growth, celebrating the passionate Mexican fanbase we experienced firsthand last weekend, and ensuring every member of our organization treats hosts, competitors, and communities with dignity,” Spire said. “We look forward to turning the page by racing hard, representing our partners, and living our values on and off the track.”
