</table></div></figure><h3>Coaching change notes</h3><p><em>theScore's senior NFL writer, Dan Wilkins, provides his instant reactions to all coaching changes made after the conclusion of the regular season.</em></p><p><strong>❌ Ravens - John Harbaugh</strong></p><p>A stunner! The Ravens opt for seismic change with this year's heartbreak coming before they could even get to the playoffs. Harbaugh's outstanding 18-year run in Baltimore has made him one of the most respected coaches in the game, so he won't be out of work for long. In fact, reports already suggest that he'll be a top candidate for open jobs around the league. And when a coach with this kind of track record becomes available, it stands to reason that even more teams could be tempted to make a change and get involved in the sweepstakes. Does that mean the Ravens are making a mistake here? Not necessarily. Because while most organizations couldn't so much as dream of a 180-113 run with 12 playoff appearances and a Super Bowl title, even the best programs can go stale. Change can be a good thing. Still yet to get over the hump in the Lamar Jackson era, it's easy to understand why the Ravens are looking to shake things up. They'll have no trouble finding a strong pivot option, as this immediately becomes the league's most attractive coaching vacancy.</p><p><strong>❌ Cardinals - Jonathan Gannon</strong></p><p>Several reports leading up to Sunday's season finale appeared to suggest that Gannon was safe. While there's always a case to be made for patience, Arizona running it back for a third year would have felt like delaying the inevitable. This is another team that was supposed to take the next step toward playoff contention this season. A 2-0 start seemingly had things moving in the right direction, but disaster struck from there. The Cardinals dropped all but one of their next 15 games, including nine straight to finish the year at 3-14. Crucially, Gannon's defense suffered the greatest setbacks after a promising 2024, ranking 29th in scoring and 27th in yards allowed in 2025. He'll presumably get a chance to bounce back as a defensive coordinator next season. The Cardinals, meanwhile, could target an offensive coach to help identify and develop their next quarterback, with Kyler Murray seemingly on the way out.</p><p><strong>❌ Raiders - Pete Carroll</strong></p><p>A one-and-done season is a tough way for Carroll to go out, as the 74-year-old is unlikely to get another head coaching job at this point. Seeking some semblance of stability after years of turmoil, it's easy to see why the Raiders initially hired Carroll. Yet somehow the team only got worse. Maybe it was doomed from the start, with minority owner Tom Brady reportedly orchestrating the failed marriage between Carroll and Chip Kelly. But the veteran head coach also didn't do himself any favors by hiring his son to oversee what ended up being the worst offensive line in football. Although the Raiders hold the No. 1 overall pick and boast deep-pocketed ownership investors, candidates will surely be wary, considering Las Vegas has cycled through three full-time head coaches since Jon Gruden's departure in 2021.</p><p><strong>❌ Browns - Kevin Stefanski</strong></p><p>Stefanski probably didn't deserve to be fired. The results haven't been there lately, but whose fault is that really? We're talking about a two-time Coach of the Year who has twice led the Browns to 11-win seasons - the most recent coming in 2023, when Deshaun Watson and Joe Flacco led the way for a QB room that cycled through five starters. The Browns could very well find a strong replacement, but don't be surprised if Stefanski immediately emerges as a candidate for top jobs elsewhere. Many teams will share the belief that he wasn't the problem in Cleveland. And in a hiring cycle with few obvious rising stars, there should be at least one suitor willing to bet that Stefanski can build a consistent winner with better organizational support.</p><p><strong>❌ Falcons - Raheem Morris</strong></p><p>Morris made a compelling case to stay by closing out the season with four straight wins, but the damage had already been done. A complete reset felt inevitable when the Falcons, who began the year expecting a significant leap, had bowed out of a featherweight NFC South race by early December. Atlanta could look to pivot toward a rising offensive mind who can maximize the young talent on that side of the ball. Meanwhile, Morris will be a coveted defensive coordinator candidate, and he could end up finding a soft landing back with Sean McVay and the Rams if Chris Shula leaves for a head coaching job in the coming weeks.</p>

Acquiring a power bat like Alonso should provide immediate impact. Pairing the Polar Bear with fellow offseason acquisition Taylor Ward gives Baltimore a tandem that combined to hit 74 homers in 2025. The last time the Orioles had a pair of hitters offer that kind of pop - Gunnar Henderson and Anthony Santander in 2023 - they won 101 games and a division title. Alonso should have no trouble keeping up his power numbers following the change of scenery, either. Camden Yards became slightly more hitter-friendly than Citi Field last year after Baltimore moved the left-field fence in, and the right-handed hitting Alonso predominantly pulls his homers. - <em>Mcwilliam</em></p><p><strong>Tatsuya Imai: </strong>The Astros may have gotten a frontline starter without dishing out big bucks on a lucrative long-term deal. Imai signed a three-year, $54-million contract after many expected him to land one of the lengthiest pacts among free-agent pitchers. The 27-year-old will also be motivated to prove he can transition from Japan to the majors successfully with opt-outs after the 2026 and 2027 seasons. The right-hander is projected to slot into Houston's rotation behind ace Hunter Brown following the departure of Framber Valdez. Imai has all the tools to be an impact pitcher, as he features a fastball that tops out at 99 mph and a unique slider, which led to a 1.92 ERA with 9.8 K/9 across 163 2/3 innings in Nippon Professional Baseball last year. -<em> Ruminski</em></p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p><strong>Edwin Díaz: </strong>Even after the Dodgers signed Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates to great hype last winter, it was easy to see how the relief corps might derail their 2025 season - and it nearly did. By the end of the World Series, Dave Roberts' circle of trust in his bullpen had essentially shrunk to Roki Sasaki, Justin Wrobleski (maybe?), and Yoshinobu Yamamoto on zero days' rest. It all worked out in the end, but Los Angeles wasn't taking a chance on that ragtag group again. Díaz, who shocked the baseball world by joining the defending champs in December, gives Roberts and the Dodgers far more than some much-needed certainty in the ninth inning. He's a stabilizer, the type of bullpen anchor they've been missing since Kenley Jansen left. Díaz's mere presence takes the pressure off Scott, Wrobleski, Alex Vesia, and other middle relievers, while he also provides the rotation more breathing room. The Orioles already added Alonso, Ward, Shane Baz, and Ryan Helsley and brought back Zach Eflin and Andrew Kittredge after a disappointing 2025 in which the club finished last in the AL East following back-to-back playoff trips. The O's are acting like a team that needs to take advantage of a young and talented core that's relatively inexpensive - for now. Henderson just became arbitration-eligible, Adley Rutschman is in his second year, and Jackson Holliday, Jordan Westburg, and Colton Cowser are still pre-arbitration players. Elias can really put a stamp on a great offseason by bringing in another frontline starter to lead the rotation. Valdez or Ranger Suárez are ideal fits. - <em>Ruminski</em></p><p><strong>Blue Jays: </strong>There's an argument to be made that the Orioles are winning the offseason. But Baltimore had more needs than the Blue Jays, who have added Kazuma Okamoto, Dylan Cease, Tyler Rogers, and Cody Ponce to fortify a squad that nearly won the World Series. Toronto's rotation of Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, Trey Yesavage, and José Berríos looked strong heading into next season, but signing one of the top free-agent starters and the KBO MVP gives the club one of the best and deepest pitching staffs in the majors. The Blue Jays didn't stop there. They also brought in another high-contact hitter to an already deep lineup in Okamoto and improved the bullpen by signing Rogers, who has posted the lowest ERA among MLB relievers with 400 innings pitched since 2019. If there was any doubt the offseason didn't already belong to Toronto, the club could make itself the clear winner by re-signing Bo Bichette or landing Kyle Tucker. - <em>Mcwilliam</em></p><p><strong>Pirates: </strong>A little caveat: I'm not saying the Pirates have "won" the winter in the traditional sense. Pittsburgh's my pick here because, for the first time in ages, the organization is spending money and actively trying to improve. General manager Ben Cherington reportedly offered contracts to star sluggers Josh Naylor and Kyle Schwarber and also got involved in the Okamoto sweepstakes. When those three signed elsewhere, Cherington responded by signing Ryan O'Hearn to a two-year deal - the first multi-year contract handed out by the club in nearly a decade - and trading for All-Star second baseman Brandon Lowe and young outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia. And the Pirates may not be done yet, as they're <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3446465" href="https://thescore.com/news/3446465">apparently</a> interested in Eugenio Suárez. These moves aren't turning the Bucs into World Series favorites, but they improve Pittsburgh's playoff odds and give Paul Skenes some much-needed help. The Cubs are coming off a 92-win season that resulted in the club's first playoff appearance since the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. However, Chicago's front office hasn't done anything this winter to build on that momentum. Instead, the club could watch Tucker leave for nothing a year after acquiring the star outfielder from the Astros for quality pieces such as Isaac Paredes and Cam Smith. The Cubs re-signed Shota Imanaga via a qualifying offer and have since brought in Phil Maton, Hoby Milner, Caleb Thielbar, Tyler Austin, Jacob Webb, and Hunter Harvey, but that's very underwhelming considering the NL Central is up for grabs. The Brewers and Reds are having muted offseasons, the Cardinals are rebuilding, and the Pirates are making an uncharacteristic push. The Cubs need to strike now. - <em>Ruminski</em></p><p><strong>Reds: </strong>Coming into this offseason, it felt like Cincinnati was ready to make some kind of splash. The Reds' bright young core finished the year strong, sneaking into the playoffs on the season's last day. They also play in a very winnable division and could grab control of the NL Central with the right moves. But the speculation about them making a splash has turned into nothing. Rumors of signing Schwarber, an Ohio native, came up empty. Ditto for the rumblings regarding a buy-low trade for bounce-back candidate Luis Robert Jr. Cincinnati's lone moves of substance this offseason have been re-signing Emilio Pagán, adding JJ Bleday, and trading for Dane Myers to platoon in left field. Meanwhile, the Reds have been outspent by the Pirates - the Pirates! - this winter, and it doesn't seem like ownership even cares. What kind of message is this inactivity sending to the players and respected veteran skipper Terry Francona? He's a consistent 30-30 threat who has 127 homers, 415 RBI, and 96 stolen bases with a 144 wRC+ over 614 games since 2021. Only Aaron Judge and Juan Soto have a higher fWAR than Tucker among outfielders during that period. The 2022 Gold Glover regressed in the field over the last few years but still finished in the 83rd percentile for arm value and 58th percentile for arm strength in 2025. It's only a matter of time before Tucker lands a big contract. The only question is whether it will be a long-term pact or a short-term deal with a higher average annual value. - <em>Ruminski</em></p><p><strong>Bo Bichette:</strong> The infielder is a game-changing talent who would immediately transform the lineup of whichever team he joins. Since 2021, Bichette ranks top 10 among big-league shortstops in games, hits, doubles, homers, RBIs, OPS, and wRC+, and that's with him missing half of the 2024 season due to injuries. The 27-year-old has also led his league in hits twice and is one of the most clutch-hitting players in the majors, with his 7.97 win probability added ranking fifth at his position over the past four seasons. He's a defensive liability at shortstop, but his willingness to shift to second base - where he looked solid during a brief cameo last postseason - shows a team-first mentality that several clubs would love to have on their roster. - <em>Mcwilliam</em></p><p><strong>Cody Bellinger: </strong>Nobody should be expecting Bellinger to rediscover his 2019 MVP-winning form, nor is he likely to regress to the lows of his dismal 2021-22 run. What Bellinger is at this point in his career is a solid piece who can improve any lineup on both sides of the ball. Although he still strikes out, he's worked hard to lower his strikeout rate and has become a more patient hitter overall. Bellinger should be a lock for around 25-30 homers and 50-plus extra-base hits from the left side. He also brings tremendous defensive value as a plus outfielder capable of playing Gold Glove-caliber defense at all three spots, plus first base if needed. He's hardly a consolation prize. Bellinger is the kind of puzzle piece who strengthens any contender, especially when he's not being asked to be the main piece. <em>- Sharkey-Gotlieb</em></p>

Detroit Pistons (25-8)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 3</p><p><strong>Find replacements for veteran duo:</strong> Detroit ranks 27th in 3-point attempts and makes while boasting a top-10 offense. The departures of Malik Beasley and Tim Hardaway Jr. could loom large in the playoffs when defenses zero in on Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren.</p><h3><a id="NYK" name="NYK">3. New York Knicks (23-9)</a></h3><p><em>Previous: </em>5</p><p><strong>Get more from the bench:</strong> Recent contributions from Jordan Clarkson, Tyler Kolek, and Mitchell Robinson are a promising sign that the Knicks can extract more from a reserve group that's 28th in the league with 31.3 points per game.</p><h3><a id="SAS" name="SAS">4. San Antonio Spurs (23-9)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 6</p><p><strong>Surround Wemby with more shooting:</strong> San Antonio lacks a true 3-point threat outside of Devin Vassell and Harrison Barnes. The Spurs need at least one more sharpshooter to prevent defenses from constantly loading up the paint against Victor Wembanyama.</p><h3><a id="DEN" name="DEN">5. That's Jamal Murray after fellow<em> </em>starters Aaron Gordon, Christian Braun, Cameron Johnson, and now Nikola Jokic all hit the treatment table with various injuries.</p><h3><a id="HOU" name="HOU">6. Houston Rockets (20-10)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 4</p><p><strong>Improve late-game execution:</strong> The Rockets have played a league-high five overtime games and lost four of them, including three in a recent four-game stretch. They're shooting just 37.5% in OT, which could prove costly come April.</p><h3><a id="MIN" name="MIN">7. Minnesota Timberwolves (21-12)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 8</p><p><strong>Keep being clutch:</strong> The T-Wolves have been very good in tight games, and Anthony Edwards is shooting 69.4% from the field in clutch scenarios, the top mark in the league. That bodes well for their chances of securing a top-six spot out West.</p><h3><a id="LAL" name="LAL">8. Los Angeles Lakers (20-11)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 7</p><p><strong>Buckle down on D:</strong> The Lakers own the Association's eighth-worst defensive rating (117.4). Head coach JJ Redick said much of this can be chalked up to a lack of effort: "We don't care enough right now." Yikes.</p><h3><a id="BOS" name="BOS">9. Boston Celtics (20-12)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:<strong> </strong></em>9</p><p><strong>Fortify the frontcourt:</strong> Neemias Queta has been a serviceable starting center, but the Celtics need more depth to capitalize on a wide-open East. Brad Stevens could make a splash by combining Anfernee Simons' expiring contract with multiple first-rounders.</p><h3><a id="PHX" name="PHX">10. But one of their glaring weaknesses is defensive rebounding - the Nets are the only team with fewer boards.</p><h3><a id="TOR" name="TOR">11. Toronto Raptors (20-14)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 15</p><p><strong>Improve the center position:</strong> Signing Mo Bamba is a good first step, but Jakob Poeltl's injury amplified the Raptors' need for another big man in their rotation. Toronto's a completely different team without Poeltl's interior defense and activity on the glass.</p><h3><a id="ORL" name="ORL">12. Orlando Magic (18-15)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 11</p><p><strong>Get a clean bill of health:</strong> Just as Paolo Banchero returned from injury, Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs were sidelined. While Desmond Bane and Anthony Black have helped pick up the slack, the Magic will require a full roster come April.</p><h3><a id="MIA" name="MIA">13. Miami Heat (18-15)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 16</p><p><strong>Find another angle:</strong> The Heat boast the league's fastest pace (104.6) and the third-most points per game (121), but a deeper look reveals that they're just 11th for points per 100 possessions (115.1), signaling that opponents are starting to figure them out.</p><h3><a id="GSW" name="GSW">14. Golden State Warriors (17-16)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 17</p><p><strong>Get more from Dray:</strong> Despite Jimmy Butler's unhinged claim that the Steve Kerr-Draymond Green brouhaha "turned (him) on a little bit,"<strong> </strong>Green hasn't been a positive influence at either end and is averaging more turnovers (3.4) than made baskets (3.1).</p><h3><a id="PHI" name="PHI">15. The former All-Star's availability will be integral for the 76ers as the postseason approaches.</p><h3><a id="CLE" name="CLE">16. Cleveland Cavaliers (18-16)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 13</p><p><strong>Start giving a crap:</strong> Granted, the Cavaliers' core four has only been healthy together for four of 30 games. But the fact remains that they don't appear to be giving the same effort on the defensive end as last season.</p><h3><a id="CHI" name="CHI">17. Chicago Bulls (15-17)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 21</p><p><strong>Show some pride defensively:</strong> Chicago's in the mix for a playoff berth despite ranking 25th in defensive efficiency. The Bulls have also struggled to generate turnovers and are allowing the fifth-most points in the paint (54.1 per game).</p><h3><a id="MEM" name="MEM">18. Memphis Grizzlies (15-18)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 18</p><p><strong>Get on same page as Ja:</strong> The Grizzlies will only go far as Ja Morant takes them. Head coach Tuomas Iisalo must continue working with Morant to get the best out of him. Barring a trade, no other solution makes immediate sense.</p><h3><a id="POR" name="POR">19. Portland Trail Blazers (14-19)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 23</p><p><strong>Protect the rock:</strong> The Trail Blazers lead the league in turnovers (17.2) and are also last in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.43). In fairness, however, they've played the league's second-most road-heavy slate, with only 12 of their 29 games at home.</p><h3><a id="ATL" name="ATL">20. With Jalen Johnson's emergence as a franchise cornerstone, Atlanta could be compelled to trade Young, who has a 2026-27 player option left on his current deal.</p><h3><a id="MIL" name="MIL">21. Milwaukee Bucks (14-19)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 20</p><p><strong>Start planning for next year:</strong> With no update on Giannis Antetokounmpo's future, an inability to develop young talent other than Ryan Rollins, and five of their next seven games on the road, the Bucks might as well view this season as a fait accompli.</p><h3><a id="UTA" name="UTA">22. Utah Jazz (12-20)</a></h3><p><em>Previous: </em>22</p><p><strong>Ship out Lauri:</strong> The Jazz are getting outscored by 13.9 points per 100 possessions when Lauri Markkanen sits and have lost all four games he's missed this season. More losses equals better lottery odds amid a protracted rebuild. Do the math.</p><h3><a id="CHA" name="CHA">23. Charlotte Hornets (11-21)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 24</p><p><strong>Sell high on LaMelo:</strong> Rookie sharpshooter Kon Knueppel appears to be a star in the making. Charlotte should hand him the keys to the franchise and trade LaMelo Ball for assets that'll set the Hornets up for long-term success.</p><h3><a id="DAL" name="DAL">24. Dallas Mavericks (12-22)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 19</p><p><strong>Trade AD:</strong> Assuming Anthony Davis can overcome his latest injury ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline, the Mavericks would be foolish to not get anything in return for a player whose peak doesn't align with Cooper Flagg's ascent.</p><h3><a id="BKN" name="BKN">25. The Nets have won seven of 11 behind Michael Porter Jr.'s inspired play, but they don't have the talent to make a playoff push and could benefit from a impactful pick in a top-heavy draft. Both statements can be true.</p><h3><a id="LAC" name="LAC">26. Los Angeles Clippers (11-21)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 28</p><p><strong>Manage Kawhi's load:</strong> The Clippers are 8-13 with Kawhi Leonard in the lineup and 2-8 without him. With his next long-term injury always one step away, it would be wise to manage his load, something the Clippers are all too familiar with.</p><h3><a id="NOP" name="NOP">27. New Orleans Pelicans (8-26)</a></h3><p><em>Previous: </em>29</p><p><strong>Focus on the present: </strong>The Pelicans were maligned for trading down for Derik Queen, and Zion Williamson's tenure has been mercurial, but the former has been a revelation, and the latter is playing well post-injury. Don't look back in anger, I heard you say.</p><h3><a id="WAS" name="WAS">28. Washington Wizards (7-24)</a></h3><p><em>Previous: </em>30</p><p><strong>Prioritize the kids:</strong> It's good to have Khris Middleton and CJ McCollum around a young locker room, but neither veteran should start. The Wizards invested first-round picks in Will Riley and Bub Carrington and need to determine if they're meaningful parts of the team's plans.</p><h3><a id="SAC" name="SAC">29. Sacramento Kings (8-25)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 27</p><p><strong>Tear it down:</strong> There's no reason to hang onto Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, or Russell Westbrook. The Kings need to start from scratch and recoup whatever assets they can get for the quartet of veterans, sparking a much-needed rebuild.</p><h3><a id="IND" name="IND">30. Indiana Pacers (6-27)</a></h3><p><em>Previous: </em>26</p><p><strong>Book better hotels:</strong> Amid a lost campaign due to Tyrese Haliburton's injury and Myles Turner's departure, the Pacers' 1-15 road mark could challenge the comical 1990-91 Sacramento Kings (1-40) for the worst away record in an 82-game season.</p>

New F1 regulations 🏁</h3><p>There's a new era in Formula 1, and it goes beyond just a new drivers' champion in Lando Norris. We're talking new cars, new teams, and new regulations. The 2026 season brings the biggest set of changes to the grid in over a decade, as the teams will debut cars that are smaller and lighter and feature active aerodynamics. Joshua-Fury finally on tap? 🥊</h3><p>Anthony Joshua could have a massive year ahead of him after scoring a sixth-round knockout of Jake Paul on Dec. 19. A long-awaited fight against former WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury is reportedly in the works for 2026.</p><p>Joshua and Fury have been linked for years as two of the top heavyweights of this generation. They came close to fighting in 2021, but it fell through because Fury had a contractual obligation to face Deontay Wilder instead. Will Fury and Joshua finally square off in 2026, or will this go down as one of the biggest matchups to never happen? - <strong><em>Nick Baldwin</em></strong></p><h3>13. Sid's next move 🐧</h3><p>Sidney Crosby will be eligible for another contract extension as of July 1, and the noise around his future will be significant - again. How much more does he have in the tank? Boozer vs. Dybantsa vs. Peterson 🔥</h3><p>The 2025-26 college hoops campaign may ultimately be defined by a talented group of freshmen. AJ Dybantsa, the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 class, is spearheading BYU's high-octane attack with his elite finishing at the rim, shot-creation, and playmaking.</p><p>Duke's Cameron Boozer, who leads the nation in scoring, is looking to become the second straight Blue Devils player to capture the Wooden Award. Darryn Peterson, meanwhile, is a transformative two-way talent who could raise Kansas' ceiling immensely if he can get healthy. Arizona's Koa Peat and Houston's Kingston Flemings are starring for a pair of national contenders, too. March Madness can't come soon enough. - <strong><em>Chicco Nacion</em></strong></p><h3>11. Vonn, Kim chasing history 👀</h3><p>Chloe Kim and Lindsey Vonn are synonymous with American excellence at the Winter Games, and both have a chance to make (more) history in 2026. Kim, who rocketed to superstardom by winning snowboard halfpipe gold as a 17-year-old in PyeongChang, defended her crown four years later in Beijing. Redemption for Shiffrin ⛷️</h3><p>"Redemption" isn't something you immediately associate with the most decorated athlete in their particular discipline. But that's what Mikaela Shiffrin is seeking at the upcoming Winter Olympics. Arguably the most dominant alpine skier ever, the American was expected to steamroll the competition at Beijing 2022. The Spaniard is looking to complete a career Grand Slam with the year's first major in Australia, where Sinner (of course) is the reigning champion. The rivals are also the biggest obstacle standing in Novak Djokovic's way as he continues to pursue a record-breaking 25th major crown. -<strong><em> Nesci</em></strong></p><h3>17. Will Giannis get traded? 🦌</h3><p>It's hard to believe that Giannis Antetokounmpo is reportedly questioning his future with a franchise that's heavily dependent on Kyle Kuzma for production, but here we are. The two-time MVP's decorated 13-year tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks could end amid reports that he's unhappy with the team's direction. It's unclear who will start for the Swedes, but the 6-foot-5 Goos has arguably the most upside of the team's netminders.</p>

It will be difficult for Makar to outperform his own teammate, but the other three are dark horses to monitor. Knight has proven to be a capable No. 1 in Chicago, but he'll be in tough to earn legitimate Vezina consideration if the Blackhawks miss the postseason. Heiskanen, the runner-up on most of our ballots, is averaging over 26 minutes per night and performing in all situations. He's the only rearguard to be top 10 in overall, shorthanded, and power-play ice time this season, and he's chipped in a respectable 29 points in 34 games.</p><p>Werenski has carried over last year's Norris runner-up form into the 2025-26 campaign, while Seider has emerged as a legitimate candidate. Although he's posted a remarkable .937 save percentage and four shutouts when the Wild have called on him, he needs more playing time to have a chance to knock off Schaefer.</p><p>Sennecke and Demidov, the league's top two rookie scorers, have strong cases to be finalists by season's end. Oklahoma City Thunder (24-2)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 1</p><p>Despite suffering their second loss of the campaign in the NBA Cup semifinals against the Spurs, the Thunder currently have no equals: Their .923 win percentage is still ahead of the record-breaking 73-win Warriors' mark from 2015-16 (.890).</p><h3><a id="DEN" name="DEN">2. Denver Nuggets (19-6)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 5</p><p>Denver's reeled off 12 straight road wins since dropping its first two of the season. With today's NBA faster and more cardio-intensive than it's ever been, does the Nuggets' acclimation to the Mile High City now benefit them the most on the road?</p><h3><a id="DET" name="DET">3. Detroit Pistons (21-5)</a></h3><p><em>Previous: </em>2</p><p>Detroit's balanced attack features six different players averaging at least double digits in scoring. However, the Pistons rank 28th in made threes (11.3 per game) following the offseason departures of Tim Hardaway Jr. and Malik Beasley.</p><h3><a id="HOU" name="HOU">4. Houston Rockets (16-7)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 4</p><p>The Rockets tend to outmuscle opponents with a league-high 16.2 offensive boards. You'd think that would result in more attempts from deep, but they're last in 3-point attempts despite owning the third-best 3-point shooting percentage (39.9<strong>%</strong>).</p><h3><a id="NYK" name="NYK">5. Top billing in the Eastern Conference is within reach for Mike Brown's in-form Knicks.</p><h3><a id="SAS" name="SAS">6. San Antonio Spurs (18-7)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 8</p><p>Victor Wembanyama boldly claimed he'd be the NBA's best player once he returned from injury, then helped the Spurs topple the Thunder to take them to the NBA Cup final<strong>.</strong> Their back-to-back rematches later this month will be a Christmas spectacle.</p><h3><a id="LAL" name="LAL">7. Los Angeles Lakers (18-7)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 3</p><p>Imagine ever telling a Lakers fan the team will need four-time MVP and 21-time All-Star LeBron James to step up and assume a bigger role amid the absence of the team's second-leading scorer, Austin Reaves. Welcome to the twilight zone.</p><h3><a id="MIN" name="MIN">8. Minnesota Timberwolves (17-9)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 13</p><p>Rudy Gobert is in a festive mood, averaging 15.2 points, 11 boards, two assists, 0.8 blocks and 0.7 steals while shooting a ridiculous 80% from the floor in December, missing only nine of his 45 field-goal attempts this month.</p><h3><a id="BOS" name="BOS">9. Boston Celtics (15-11)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 17</p><p>After going 7-3 over its last 10, Boston's suddenly just a handful of games off the East's peak. Jordan Walsh is further cementing himself in the rotation; he's averaging 27 minutes over his last seven games with shooting splits of 76.6/64.7/88.2.</p><h3><a id="PHI" name="PHI">10. Tyrese Maxey has taken his game to another level in Year 6, averaging career highs in scoring (31.5), assists (7.2), and rebounds (4.7).</p><h3><a id="ORL" name="ORL">11. Orlando Magic (15-11)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 11</p><p>For a second straight season, Orlando lost Franz Wagner for several weeks after Paolo Banchero's own multi-week injury absence. Ideally, the Magic's more balanced roster this season will help them manage while Wagner recovers.</p><h3><a id="PHX" name="PHX">12. Phoenix Suns (14-12)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 14</p><p>After a hot November stretch, Phoenix has now dropped six of its last nine, including this season's NBA-worst 49-point defeat to the Thunder. Devin Booker's return gave them hope against the Lakers, but Dillon Brooks' late ejection spoiled that.</p><h3><a id="CLE" name="CLE">13. Cleveland Cavaliers (15-12)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 12</p><p>The hits keep on coming for Kenny Atkinson's squad. Evan Mobley, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, is sidelined for two-to-four weeks on top of injuries to Larry Nance Jr., Max Strus, and Sam Merrill. The best ability remains availability for the Cavs.</p><h3><a id="ATL" name="ATL">14. Atlanta Hawks (15-12)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 9</p><p>Jalen Johnson has blossomed during Trae Young's absence. The versatile 6-foot-8 forward already owns the Hawks' single-season record for triple-doubles (six), and only Nikola Jokic has registered more triple-doubles this season.</p><h3><a id="TOR" name="TOR">15. RJ Barrett's knee injury has factored into the club's recent struggles as Toronto's offense is missing his 3-point shooting and ability to get to the free-throw line.</p><h3><a id="MIA" name="MIA">16. Miami Heat (14-12)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 10</p><p>The Heat have dropped six of seven, and while the defense remains one of the league's best, their 15th-ranked offensive rating (114.3) is inflated by the Association's fastest pace (105.08). The cracks are starting to show.</p><h3><a id="GSW" name="GSW">17. Golden State Warriors (13-14)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 16</p><p>Jonathan Kuminga is eligible to be traded Jan. 15 after signing a two-year, $48.5-million contract in September, and three consecutive DNPs aren't doing much to boost the polarizing forward's value. This entire situation has been mismanaged.</p><h3><a id="MEM" name="MEM">18. Memphis Grizzlies (12-14)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 19</p><p>The Grizzlies went 7-3 during Ja Morant's spell on the sidelines, and Zach Edey deserves a lot of the credit, having improved nearly every facet of his game. Now, it's up to Morant and Co. to weather the storm in Edey's absence.</p><h3><a id="DAL" name="DAL">19. Dallas Mavericks (10-17)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 24</p><p>The Mavs are turning things around with Anthony Davis back in the lineup. It's unclear if Davis will remain in Dallas for the long haul amid trade rumors, but he's given the team a boost with his low-post scoring, rim protection, and secondary playmaking.</p><h3><a id="MIL" name="MIL">20. It's hard to think of much else in Milwaukee, which has won three games over the last month.</p><h3><a id="CHI" name="CHI">21. Chicago Bulls (10-15)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 18</p><p>Chicago's 6-1 start is nothing but a memory now. It's been clear for a while that this team isn't a contender as currently constructed. The Bulls' front office needs to be shopping Nikola Vucevic's expiring deal, especially after his recent benching.</p><h3><a id="UTA" name="UTA">22. Utah Jazz (10-15)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 23</p><p>Only two teams roster multiple scorers averaging over 26 points in December: The Nuggets have Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, and the Jazz have Lauri Markkanen and Keyonte George. The latter is on a tear this month and has dropped 39 and 37 points in back-to-back games.</p><h3><a id="POR" name="POR">23. Portland Trail Blazers (10-16)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 21</p><p>Portland's acquisition of Deni Avdija from the Washington Wizards in July 2024 has been a home run. The 24-year-old forward is one of only four players in the Association averaging at least 25 points, seven boards, and six assists.</p><h3><a id="CHA" name="CHA">24. Charlotte Hornets (8-18)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 22</p><p>While it hasn't translated into many wins, the Hornets can relish a savvy draft that resulted in the recruitment of Rookie of the Year candidate Kon Knueppel, Ryan Kalkbrenner, Sion James, and Liam McNeeley. Small victories are still victories.</p><h3><a id="BKN" name="BKN">25. However, he's had little offensive support, especially with Cam Thomas still sidelined with a hamstring strain.</p><h3><a id="IND" name="IND">26. Indiana Pacers (6-20)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 26</p><p>It's fitting that Tyrese Haliburton was in attendance for John Cena's final WWE match Saturday as the man who never gives up tapped out. The undermanned Pacers have fought this season but, like Cena, it may be time to tap out.</p><h3><a id="SAC" name="SAC">27. Sacramento Kings (6-20)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 25</p><p>It's incredible to think that ex-Kings general manager Monte McNair saw the flaws of the DeMar DeRozan-Zach LaVine tandem in Chicago and decided it would somehow work in Sacramento. Spoiler alert: It hasn't, and now it's Scott Perry's mess to clean up.</p><h3><a id="LAC" name="LAC">28. Los Angeles Clippers (6-20)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 27</p><p>The fallout from their sudden split with Chris Paul was the last thing the Clippers needed. But don't let that distract you from the team's defensive struggles. Los Angeles is allowing the third-most fast-break points per game (17.5) this season.</p><h3><a id="NOP" name="NOP">29. New Orleans Pelicans (5-22)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 29</p><p>Zion Williamson is back after the Pelicans went 1-5 without him. They're now 3-13 when he doesn't play but also just 2-9 when he does. Trading Trey Murphy III to recoup draft assets for 2026 and beyond is arguably New Orleans' only recourse.</p><h3><a id="WAS" name="WAS">30.
