<p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/8173" href="/mlb/players/8173">Kyle Tucker</a> looks like he's primed to be the crown jewel of free agency next offseason.</p><p>The Chicago Cubs and the All-Star outfielder aren't currently negotiating a contract extension, sources told <a href="https://fansided.com/mlb-insider-cubs-haven-t-started-contract-talks-kyle-tucker">Robert Murray of FanSided</a>. </p><p>However, the two sides could engage in contract talks this summer, according to <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/04/17/sports/kyle-tucker-cubs-could-initiate-extension-talks-this-summer/">Jon Heyman of the New York Post</a>.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The reports come on the heels of rumors the Cubs and Tucker had discussed a new deal that would prevent the 28-year-old from hitting the open market.</p><p>Tucker is off to a torrid start this season, slashing .318/.419/.636 with six homers, 21 RBIs, and four stolen bases over 22 games. He was traded to Chicago over the winter after spending the first seven years of his career with the Houston Astros.</p>

"When you see a team trade him, 99 out of 100 players would probably be wondering, 'What does that mean?' That's the question I asked myself.</p><p>"And obviously if I went there, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/5367" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/5367">(Alex) Bregman</a> wouldn't have been going there - that's another player."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Arenado blocked the deal to the Astros in mid-December, five days after the Tucker trade was finalized. The former would've replaced Bregman, who eventually signed with the Boston Red Sox, as Houston's starting third baseman.</p><p>The 33-year-old acknowledged the Astros were originally on his five-team list of preferred destinations but his perspective changed.</p><p>"There was rumors of me going there, and there was a chance, obviously, but at the end of the day, Bregman wasn't going back there, I think that kind of threw everybody off," Arenado said. "I think we all thought there was a chance he would retire an Astro. That group of players, it just seemed like they all gelled well together. When you saw that not happening, it's kind of crazy."</p><p>The eight-time All-Star added that seeing <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/8415" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/8415">Framber Valdez</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/3675" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/3675">Ryan Pressly</a>'s names in trade rumors also created doubt in his mind about going to Houston, according to Rome. Pressly ended up getting dealt to the Cubs, too.</p><p>The Astros quickly pivoted to signing first baseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/3836" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/3836">Christian Walker</a> once it became clear that Arenado was no longer a viable option.</p>

"Half a billion dollars, it's a huge, huge amount. For him, it's a fantastic deal. It's great for the first-base market, I think. I mean, 14 years - he's a stud. Well deservedly so. </p><p>"Right now, you can't think of the Toronto Blue Jays without Vlad Jr. He's done some really amazing things in this league and for that team. Super well deserved."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Alonso, who returned to the Mets on a two-year, $54-million deal during the offseason, can test free agency again after this season due to a player option. The four-time All-Star reportedly rejected a seven-year, $158-million extension in June 2023.</p><p>The 30-year-old could be the top first baseman available if he builds on a great start to 2025, as he's slashing .314/.429/.657 with three homers and 11 RBIs over 10 games.</p><p>Alonso added that while he's not opposed to having contract talks during the season, his primary focus is helping New York on the field.</p><p>"Obviously, if something happens, then I am sure Scott (Boras) and Steve (Cohen) or David (Stearns) will talk about it, but my job is to focus and lock in on the season, and win," Alonso said.</p>

<p>The Boston Red Sox signed second baseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/17342" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/17342">Kristian Campbell</a> to an eight-year contract extension that starts this year and includes club options in 2033 and 2034, the team announced Wednesday.</p><p>Campbell's deal is worth $60 million guaranteed, sources told <a href="http://www.masslive.com/redsox/2025/04/red-sox-sign-kristian-campbell-to-8-year-extension-with-60m-guaranteed.html">MassLive's Chris Cotillo</a>.</p><p>The 2033 option is reportedly worth $19 million, while the 2034 option is for $21 million, which could bring the value to $96 million over 10 years. The pact also includes a $2-million signing bonus and $4-million buyout.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The base salaries from 2031-2034 can also increase due to performance escalators, reports Cotillo, who adds that Campbell can earn as much as an extra $2 million per season during those years for winning MVP.</p><p>The 22-year-old has gone 6-for-16 with a homer and four walks over the first five games of his career this season after making the Red Sox following a stellar spring camp. He slashed .330/.439/.558 with 20 long balls, 77 RBIs, and 24 stolen bases across 115 contests over three minor-league levels in 2024.</p><p>Campbell is the No. 6 prospect in all of baseball, according to <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects">MLB Pipeline</a>.</p><p>The Red Sox selected Campbell as a compensation pick in the fourth round of the 2023 draft. The club received the pick when <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/3629" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/3629">Xander Bogaerts</a> signed with the San Diego Padres in December 2022.</p><p>Campbell's extension comes two days after Boston <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3255426" href="https://thescore.com/news/3255426">signed</a> All-Star left-hander <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/12246" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/12246">Garrett Crochet</a> to a six-year, $170-million deal.</p><p> </p>

"I’m just looking forward to keeping it going for the next nine years. This is exactly where I want to be."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The contract is worth $135 million in guaranteed money but can reach $204 million, sources told <a href="https://x.com/ByRobertMurray/status/1907417780221321666">Robert Murray of FanSided</a>, who adds the $30-million club option for a 10th season can be converted to a player option.</p><p>Merrill can modify the 2035 option with a top-five finish in MVP voting in any campaign, reports <a href="https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1907430306489016470">Jon Heyman of MLB Network</a>.</p><p>Performance escalators can also take the pact to $165 million with 500 plate appearances in each season throughout the contract, according to <a href="https://x.com/ByRobertMurray/status/1907444555563376666">Murray</a>.</p><p>The extension doesn't include any opt-out clauses, per <a href="https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/04/02/padres-jackson-merrill-agrees-to-nine-year-135-million-contract/">Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune</a>.</p><p>Merrill, who wouldn't have been arbitration-eligible until 2027, recorded 24 homers, 90 RBIs and 16 stolen bases with an .826 OPS and 5.3 fWAR over 156 games last year. He finished as the 2024 NL Rookie of the Year runner-up and placed ninth in NL MVP voting.</p><p>The young star's strong play has continued in 2025, as he's slashing .400/.435/.600 with one long ball and a team-leading six RBIs through the Padres' 6-0 start.</p><p>San Diego selected Merrill with the No. 27 pick in the 2021 draft before he rocketed up the club's organizational rankings to become a top prospect. </p>
