Report: Marlins scrap practice squad ad after MLB voices concerns
A Miami Marlins practice squad concept that was advertised on social media was scrapped by the organization after Major League Baseball voiced their concerns with the idea, report Andy McCullough and Sam Blum of The Athletic.
MLB officials contacted the Marlins after an advertisement appeared on the LinkedIn page of a minor-league staffer in Miami's organization. The ad offered non-professional players an opportunity to play on a practice squad against the Marlins' Single-A club in Jupiter, Florida for a $150 daily wage.
The league was reportedly concerned the idea would violate roster rules and potentially cause labor issues after the most recent minor-league collective bargaining agreement called for Low-A players to earn a minimum salary of $26,200, while rookie-ball players earned a minimum of $19,800.
A Marlins official told McCullough and Blum "someone ran too quickly" with the ad before it was finalized. It has since been deleted.
The Marlins enter the 2025 regular season with an MLB-low payroll of $47 million, according to Spotrac.
