Alonso passes Strawberry for most HRs in Mets history

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso hit his 253rd home run Tuesday to pass Darryl Strawberry for the most homers in franchise history.

The record-breaking homer came during Alonso's 965th game with New York. Strawberry hit his 252nd homer with the Mets during his 1,106th game in 1990.

"As a kid you don't really think that it's in the realm of possibility to be a franchise home run leader," Alonso said, according to SNY. "You just want to get to the big leagues and give it your best."

He added: "It's a wild dream, to be honest, and it's really special."

Alonso clubbed his second homer of the game in the sixth inning to increase his franchise record to 254.

"Pete standing on the bench in the dugout with a huge smile on his face, just saluting the crowd. ... That's a moment that I will never forget," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said after his team's 13-5 win.

Tuesday's homers were Alonso's 27th and 28th of the season. Prior to this year, Alonso's recorded 34 or more homers every season of his career, excluding the shortened 2020 campaign.
