Report: Red Sox make competitive offer to Bregman
The Boston Red Sox made what they consider a competitive offer to free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, a source told The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey.
Boston's offer was aggressive, McCaffrey's source confirmed.
Bregman opted out of the last two seasons of the three-year, $120-million deal he signed with the Red Sox before the 2025 campaign. He's apparently seeking a six-year contract this time around. Boston's been connected to the three-time All-Star for most of the winter.
Bregman was terrific in his lone season with the Red Sox, slashing .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 114 games. He was also influential in the clubhouse and helped mentor young players like Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer, according to McCaffrey.
If Bregman continues to hold out, the Red Sox could pivot to free-agent infielder Bo Bichette, McCaffrey adds. Bregman will turn 32 in March, and Bichette, who's spent his MLB career to date with the Toronto Blue Jays, is four years younger.
Boston has been the favorite to land Bregman for most of the offseason, but the third baseman has also reportedly drawn interest from the Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, and Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays may be out of the running for Bregman, however, after signing Japanese infielder Kazuma Okamoto over the weekend.
