Toronto Blue Jays right-hander José Berríos won't be ready to pitch on Opening Day after he was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right elbow, manager John Schneider announced Wednesday, according to MLB.com's Keegan Matheson.

Berríos is pain-free, and the team hopes the 31-year-old can resume throwing soon and pitch through the issue.

The veteran consulted a doctor Tuesday after an MRI revealed elbow inflammation following three spring outings for the Blue Jays.

Berríos was sidelined near the end of the 2025 campaign with elbow inflammation and missed the postseason. Schneider said last week that Berríos' recent bout of inflammation was different than last season's.

The right-hander has appeared in 139 games (138 starts) for the Blue Jays since the middle of the 2021 campaign. He owns a 4.09 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 790 1/3 innings for Toronto.
