The Detroit Tigers placed All-Star outfielder Riley Greene on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain, they announced Wednesday.
The Tigers believe Greene's strain is mild, manager A.J. Hinch said after his team's 6-4 loss to the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday, according to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic. Still, the skipper was unable to provide an immediate timetable for his return.
Greene was injured while running the bases in the second inning of Tuesday's game. After shaking off a hit-by-pitch to lead off the bottom of the second, he appeared to pull up while scoring from first on Spencer Torkelson's double and didn't take his position to start the third.
The 25-year-old is enjoying another solid season for the Tigers, hitting .273/.366/.450 with 16 homers and 54 RBIs over 117 games this year. Greene was named to the AL All-Star squad in July for a third consecutive season.
His injury is a huge blow to a Tigers team that's been red-hot despite trading Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Detroit entered play Wednesday having won nine of 12 since July 28 to pull within a half-game of the Rangers for the final AL wild-card spot and 2.5 games back of the White Sox in the AL Central.
Outfielder Corey Julks was selected from Triple-A Toledo to take Greene's place on the active roster. To make room for Julks on the 40-man roster, the team designated right-hander Troy Watson for assignment.
