Lions' Gibbs: I'd play CB, safety to win Super Bowl
Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs says he'll do whatever it takes to win the Lombardi Trophy.
"I want to win a Super Bowl. ... I'll line up at safety, at nickel," Gibbs told reporters Sunday on the first day of training camp, according to Brad Galli of WXYZ Detroit.
Gibbs is entering his third NFL season after being drafted 12th overall in 2023. The Alabama product had a breakout campaign last year, leading the league in rushing touchdowns (16) while racking up 1,929 scrimmage yards on 302 touches.
The 23-year-old is expected to be the focal point of the offense under new coordinator John Morton, who takes over following Ben Johnson's departure to become the Chicago Bears' head coach. Gibbs recently said the team has been utilizing him more frequently as a pass-catcher than previously.
"I gotta learn the formations for being split out," Gibbs told WXYZ-TV Detroit. "I'm being split out way more than I was the past two years. That's good. That's going to be fun. I've been waiting on that."
Gibbs lined up in the slot or as an outside wide receiver on 12% of his 690 offensive snaps last season, according to PFF.
Detroit finished first in the NFC with a 15-2 record in 2024. However, injuries crushed the Lions' defense down the stretch, and they ultimately lost to the Washington Commanders 45-31 in the NFC divisional round.
"I'm still as enthusiastic as ever," Lions head coach Dan Campbell said at a press conference Sunday. "There's a price to be paid to get yourself back into the dance ... that'll never change. If we let that slide at all, then we're going to be sitting here at home in January, and that's not what we want."
Detroit kicks off its season against the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 7.
