Bruins trade Marchand to Panthers for conditional pick
The Boston Bruins traded captain Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers for a conditional draft pick, general manager Don Sweeney announced.
The pick is a 2027 second-rounder that turns into a either a 2027 or 2028 first-round choice if Florida wins at least two playoff rounds and Marchand plays 50% of the Panthers' playoff games.
Sweeney noted Marchand's injury impacted the return. The winger is currently week-to-week with an upper-body ailment.
The Bruins are retaining 50% of Marchand's $6.125-million cap hit.
Reports of Marchand's availability intensified Thursday, as it was revealed the Bruins were open to offers for the pending unrestricted free agent despite his desire to sign an extension with the club that drafted him in 2006.
Marchand's notched 47 points in 61 games this campaign and was a member of Canada's championship roster at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February.
The Panthers eliminated the Bruins in the past two postseasons. Boston is currently three points back of the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, while Florida is pacing the Atlantic Division.
Marchand has a wealth of playoff experience, including a Stanley Cup victory in 2011 and 138 points in 157 career playoff contests.
Boston sold off numerous assets leading up to the deadline, moving out Trent Frederic, Charlie Coyle, and Brandon Carlo in addition to Marchand.
Florida also acquired Seth Jones recently to boost its chances of repeating as champions.
