Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin will travel to Michigan this week to meet with star defenseman Quinn Hughes and his camp to talk about a contract extension, reports The Athletic's Michael Russo.
Hughes is entering the final year of his current deal with a $7.85-million cap hit and has been eligible to sign an extension since July 1. He said in May that he "would definitely be open" to re-signing in Minnesota.
The Wild would reportedly prefer to sign Hughes to an extension that ranges between five and eight years. However, the NHL's maximum contract length will be seven years when the new CBA takes effect Sept. 16.
Notably, Hughes' brothers, Jack and Luke, are under contract with the New Jersey Devils for the next four and six years, respectively. Jack said last offseason that he would love to play with Quinn one day. The Devils were reportedly interested in trading for Quinn last season before the Vancouver Canucks dealt him to Minnesota.
Quinn has a chance to exceed Leo Carlsson's NHL-high $18-million cap hit on his next contract. He tallied 76 points in 74 games between the Canucks and Wild last season, finishing seventh in Norris Trophy voting. The 26-year-old won the Norris in 2024 and was a finalist in 2025.
The Wild didn't make any sizeable long-term commitments this offseason and are armed with over $45 million in cap space for 2027-28.
