<p>Four-time All-Star Juan Soto is expected to sign the richest contract for a position player in MLB history this winter. Just a week into the offseason, his market is already taking shape, with <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3120691" href="https://thescore.com/news/3120691">Jon Heyman of the New York Post</a> reporting Wednesday that at least seven teams have contacted agent Scott Boras about Soto.</p><p>We weigh the pros and cons of each reported organization and how those could influence Soto's decision.</p><h3>Boston Red Sox</h3><p><strong>Pro: </strong>The Red Sox have missed the postseason in three straight years but are coming off an encouraging 81-win season. They've got a strong young core and a farm system featuring six top-100 prospects, three of them in the top 10. After operating under the luxury tax in recent years, ownership is expected to spend this winter (and has committed to a high payroll before). Alex Cora is a well-respected manager and just signed an extension, so things appear stable within the organization. Boston also has a strong tradition of Dominican-born stars in David Ortiz and Pedro Martinez, and Fenway would be a great place for Soto to hit.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p><strong>Con:</strong> Playing in Boston comes with intense scrutiny, and expectations will be very high based on that kind of contract. There's nowhere to hide if things don't go well, which is difficult for some players. Fenway Park's right field is a challenge for even the best defenders and Soto's not one, so it's possible he moves over to left. Owner John Henry could be hesitant to spend big after extending Rafael Devers. A number of Boston's young players are outfielders - though none can match Soto's ceiling - and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow could decide to use his budget elsewhere.</p><h3>Los Angeles Dodgers</h3><p><strong>Pro: </strong>The Dodgers are the gold standard in MLB. They spend, they win, and they have an absurd player development group that not only gets the best out of everyone on the roster, but also creates a seemingly inexhaustible pipeline of young talent. Soto would hit around three future Hall of Famers in Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman while playing for another one of baseball's historic franchises and biggest fan bases. Living in a large market would allow Soto to keep growing his brand and potentially explore other opportunities. He can always be confident that ownership is committed to winning and will do whatever it takes to build the best roster. Betts' move to the infield next season creates a need in right field.</p><p><strong>Con:</strong> Does Soto really want to join the team that just beat him in the World Series? Instead of jumping into an organization that's already full of stars, maybe he wants to be part of building something different. And while this doesn't apply to Soto personally, there's an argument that him joining the Dodgers would be bad for baseball. Los Angeles deferred considerable money on a number of its biggest contracts - Ohtani, Betts, Freeman - in order to afford its roster, and that could be a deterrent for Soto. After winning the 2024 World Series, Los Angeles likely isn't feeling as much anxiety about making a major splash this winter compared to last. Soto also reportedly prefers the East Coast.</p><h3>New York Mets</h3><p><strong>Pro:</strong> Does Soto love living in New York but not playing for the Yankees? Well, luckily for him, the city has another team. The Mets are in good hands with David Stearns leading the front office and billionaire Steve Cohen as owner. The Mets have the financial resources to be one of MLB's top organizations in every facet, and the franchise will likely submit the highest bid for Soto. This is a major market coming off a great season that re-energized the fan base. There were a number of departures this winter, but Francisco Lindor and Kodai Senga are signed long term, and the roster features a number of young contributors with multiple years of control. Stearns showed he can build a great team on a budget with the Milwaukee Brewers; now, he has all the resources he'll ever need.</p><p><strong>Con: </strong>The Mets don't have the same level of prestige as the Yankees, and maybe Soto wants to be part of the biggest show in town. For as much success as the Mets had in 2024 - and for as talented as Stearns is - they also might have caught lightning in a bottle. With Judge locked up long term, Soto can find comfort in knowing the pair would have plenty of years together. The fan base adores Soto, and he appeared to be a positive presence in the clubhouse. He knows what he's getting with the Yankees, which should put him at ease. Soto would have the opportunity to become one of the greatest players in franchise history and could be responsible for bringing a title back to the Bronx. It's hard for any other team to offer the type of potential legacy he could build with the Yankees.</p><p><strong>Con:</strong> Soto helped lead this team to a World Series appearance, but maybe he wasn't convinced the Yankees are on the same level as some of the NL powerhouses. The core, while talented, is aging: Judge will be 33 next year, while Giancarlo Stanton and Gerrit Cole will be 35. Hal Steinbrenner opened his wallet for Cole and Judge, but Soto's contract and Cohen's ability to drive up the price could make him uncomfortable. Given the number of holes on the Yankees' roster, ownership and the front office might decide it makes more sense to spread that money around.</p><h3>San Francisco Giants</h3><p><strong>Pro:</strong> If Soto doesn't want to share the spotlight, he'd be the main attraction for the Giants. The organization has been in pursuit of a star for years but continues to fall short. Hiring Buster Posey will likely breathe new life into the team, and ownership has shown a willingness to spend. The club has a decent core of young players it can build around, plus Matt Chapman, Jung Hoo Lee, and Logan Webb are signed long term.</p><p><strong>Con: </strong>As tantalizing as adding Soto would be, Posey probably isn't looking to get sucked into a bidding war in his first months on the job. The Giants aren't a single player away from contending, and spreading those resources around makes more sense. Although San Francisco has a rich baseball history, the core that rattled off three World Series wins in five years is long gone. The Giants have made one playoff series in eight years and are stuck in a division with the Dodgers.</p><h3>Tampa Bay Rays</h3><p><strong>Pro:</strong> During all these seasons the Rays haven't been spending, maybe ownership was actually putting funds into a Soto savings account? It was certainly a surprise to see the Rays reported as suitors, though they did make an offer to Freddie Freeman in the past and signed Wander Franco to a $182-million extension (that will likely be void). If Soto wants to live in Florida with minimal media pressure and play for a team that excels at finding every competitive edge, then the Rays are a great fit. A number of ex-Rays boast about how well the organization treated them, and the team loves playing for Kevin Cash.</p><p><strong>Con:</strong> The limited budget is the obvious starting point. Ownership's demonstrated almost no commitment to spending, and good players are often shipped out once they become too expensive. The team is usually good but never great. Would Soto get frustrated with watching his teammates get traded? In all likelihood, the club would be interested in signing Soto to a short-term deal if his market doesn't develop the way he'd like. Tampa Bay is set to build a new stadium for 2028, but the extensive damage to Tropicana Field from Hurricane Milton could displace the team for an unknown amount of time, adding another layer of doubt to an already improbable match.</p><h3>Toronto Blue Jays</h3><p><strong>Pro: </strong>The Blue Jays might have the biggest market in baseball as the only team that represents an entire country. Soto would be able to secure endorsement deals and expand his platform while being the focal point of the organization. Joining Toronto would offer Soto the challenge of trying to take down the high-spending Yankees and Red Sox in the AL East while building a legacy with a franchise that lacks a long history of Hall of Fame players. Rogers is one of the richest owners in MLB and has committed to spending during this competitive window. Soto could also play alongside friend and fellow All-Star Vlad Guerrero Jr., though that partnership could be short-lived with Guerrero set to hit free agency next winter.</p><p><strong>Con:</strong> The futures of Guerrero and Bo Bichette hang over the Jays. Both homegrown players remain without extensions and are only under contract for one more season. It would be hard to sell Soto on signing without finishing a Guerrero extension first. Uncertainty also surrounds the long-term futures of general manager Ross Atkins, president Mark Shapiro, and manager John Schneider. José Berríos and Yariel Rodríguez are the only players signed through 2027. While that creates a lot of financial flexibility, it also opens the door for enormous turnover and a potential rebuild. Toronto is coming off a down season, and this leadership group hasn't exactly excelled at player development. The Blue Jays haven't won a postseason game since 2016 and have one top-100 prospect (No. 94) in their system.</p>

<p>The New York Yankees reached the World Series for the first time since 2009, but the season ended with one of the worst losses in the franchise's history, leaving a sour taste in the Bronx that will likely linger all winter.</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/2913" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/2913">Gerrit Cole</a> called the Game 5 loss "as bad as it gets," while <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/4773" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/4773">Aaron Judge</a> said losing the World Series "will stick with me until I die." Aaron Boone, who will reportedly return next season, was emotional while speaking about how the season ended, saying the loss "will sting forever."</p><p>It was a year that was supposed to be celebrated - an AL pennant, another MVP award for Judge, and a generational player hitting ahead of him in Juan Soto. There is no Plan B that provides the same impact. </p><p>Soto didn't go as far as wearing a Boras hat to his end-of-season media availability after the Game 5 loss, but he did make it clear that he has no loyalty to any team and is open to negotiate with whoever is interested.</p><p>The four-time All-Star said he enjoyed his time playing in New York alongside Judge, and both players were incredibly productive together. Can the Yankees really justify letting a Hall-of-Fame-caliber Soto leave in his prime after losing the World Series?</p><p>After turning down $440 million from the Washington Nationals two years ago, Soto has only increased his value. Bidding is expected to exceed $500 million, so the Yankees will almost certainly need to hand out the richest contract in the franchise's history, one that surpasses Judge's $360-million deal.</p><p>Soto's already won a World Series, and while he'll likely want to join a team that gives him a chance to win another one, his main motivation appears to be securing the largest financial commitment he can. He probably won't reach Ohtani money, but he'll at least be in the same stratosphere. The Yankees have the financial means to pay Soto whatever he wants. However, whether or not Hal Steinbrenner is willing to do so is another question.</p><p>The Yankees' biggest threat looks like it will come from Queens. The New York Mets enjoyed a resurgent season, and Steve Cohen has the funds to sign any player. A shot at signing a generational talent will inevitably result in a lot of interest, so expect the San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and even Los Angeles Dodgers to be in the picture. You can't rule out the San Diego Padres and Washington Nationals, either, and maybe even the Baltimore Orioles with their new ownership. Almost every team should try and speak with Soto and Boras.</p><h3>Decisions on Cole and Rizzo</h3><p>Brian Cashman has several options he'll need to make decisions about by Tuesday.</p><p>Cole's contract allows him to opt out of the remaining four years, $144 million on his deal and hit free agency. However, the Yankees can void that opt-out by tacking on an additional year at the end of his contract at $36 million, bringing the remainder owed to $180 million through the 2029 season. Even entering his age-34 season, and coming off an injury-shortened year, Cole would likely make more through free agency. The Yankees picking up that option therefore makes some sense.</p><p>The Yankees also hold a $17-million team option on first baseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/1681" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/1681">Anthony Rizzo</a> that includes a $6-million buyout. Rizzo is a valued member of the clubhouse, but it's difficult to justify that salary given his offensive decline. The most likely scenario is the franchise declines that option and negotiates a new deal. The club could also go in a different direction at first base with a more productive offensive player.</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/5394" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/5394">Luke Weaver</a>'s emergence at the back end of the bullpen helps soften the blow of a number of departing relievers. Exercising his $2.5-million option might be the biggest no-brainer this winter.</p><h3>The other free agents</h3><p>While Soto gets all the oxygen, there are a number of other key players hitting free agency. Longtime infielder <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/4975" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/4975">Gleyber Torres</a>, outfielder <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/5637" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/5637">Alex Verdugo</a>, and relievers <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/3835" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/3835">Tommy Kahnle</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/8239" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/8239">Clay Holmes</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/9856" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/9856">Jonathan Loáisiga</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/8824" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/8824">Tim Hill</a> are now on the market.</p><p>Those departures clear almost $70 million in payroll, but the Yankees still have over $210 million on the books for next season, and New York will need to add a pair of corner outfielders should Soto and Verdugo not return. They could move <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/9520" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/9520">Jazz Chisholm</a> to center field and slide Judge back over to right, but that would create a void at third base. Chisholm's defensive versatility will be an asset when building the puzzle this winter. The door is open for <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/15477" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/15477">Jasson Domínguez</a> to get meaningful playing time next season. Either way, at least one corner outfielder needs to be added, as well as an infielder that can play second or third base. That's all in addition to a bullpen that needs a lot of work.</p><h3>Offseason targets</h3><p>Judge, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/13802" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/13802">Anthony Volpe</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/1388" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/1388">Giancarlo Stanton</a>, Chisholm, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/12678" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/12678">Austin Wells</a> appear to be the only 2025 everyday players currently on the roster. There are openings for some younger players like Oswald Peraza and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/13635" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/13635">Oswaldo Cabrera</a>, but expect the Yankees to make a number of adds to the offense.</p><p>While Soto is the top priority, bringing him back does not solve all the team's issues, and there are numerous free agents available that fit their needs. <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/8674" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/8674">Pete Alonso</a> could be the Yankees' next first baseman and middle-of-the-order bat. He's handled the pressures of New York with the Mets, though his OPS declined in each of the last three seasons, and it's always a gamble paying a first baseman a lot of money. <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/3836" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/3836">Christian Walker</a> could be a less expensive option if they don't bring back Rizzo.</p><p>Shortstop <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/4784" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/4784">Willy Adames</a> could be an option if he's willing to move to third base, or maybe Adames is signed to play shortstop and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/13802" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/13802">Anthony Volpe</a> is packaged away in a trade. The Yankees could sign longtime Houston Astros third baseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/5367" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/5367">Alex Bregman</a>, though there's still a lot of animosity from Cashman and the fans over the sign-stealing scandal. After Soto, the corner outfield market contains sluggers <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/8303" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/8303">Anthony Santander</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/4472" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/4472">Teoscar Hernández</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/5140" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/5140">Tyler O'Neill</a>.</p><p>The Yankees have done very well in trades over the years, and that could be an avenue they go down. Oakland Athletics outfielder <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/9582" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/9582">Brent Rooker</a> would be a perfect target, even though there will be a lot of interest and the acquisition cost will be significant. Cashman traded a lot away in order to acquire Soto and might be reluctant to part with more young pieces. Still, it always seems like the Yankees have the assets to land whoever they want. With the St. Louis Cardinals cutting payroll, taking on the remainder of <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/2381" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/2381">Nolan Arenado</a>'s contract could also be an option at third base. Maybe closer <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/9598" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/9598">Ryan Helsley</a> can be included in a deal.</p><p>Should Cole return, the entire rotation from this year is under contract next season. Marcus Stroman did not pitch during the postseason despite being healthy, so there's a possibility the front office looks to move off him and add another veteran starter.</p><p>Whatever the Yankees decide to do, the front office needs to focus on bringing in players that are fundamentally sound. Poor defensive play and numerous baserunning issues plagued the Yankees throughout the season and into the playoffs. That will need to be addressed to avoid the same results in 2025. Meanwhile, there's nothing the front office can do to help eliminate Judge's postseason struggles other than hope things turn around in the future. Judge, Stanton, Cole and the rest of the core will be another year older next season, so keeping this window open remains imperative.</p><p>New York should be one of the top teams in the AL next season, but as they demonstrated in the World Series, there's another level the team needs to get to in order to compete with the likes of the Dodgers.</p><p>The big question remains the same - how much will defeat fuel Steinbrenner to spend?</p><p>If the Yankees don't bring Soto back, they better have a hell of a Plan B.</p>

There are separate lawsuits from people claiming they were the ones to catch Ohtani's historic ball. The lawsuits remain open, though all parties agreed to allow the ball to go to auction. The money will be held until a ruling on the rightful owner is made.</p>

Leclerc didn't look back from there, taking the checkered flag by 8.5 seconds over teammate Carlos Sainz and 19 seconds ahead of Verstappen, who hasn't won in nine races. Amazingly, that's the closest Verstappen's finished to first place since the summer break.</p><p>"It's a big day for the team and a big day for Ferrari in general," Leclerc said. The victory was also Leclerc's third of the season and the Scuderia's fourth in 2024.</p><p>While most of the focus has been on McLaren tracking down and surpassing Red Bull, Ferrari's been chipping away at the deficit in the shadows. A lot of that has to do with Leclerc's brilliance in the second half.</p><p>Leclerc has five podiums in his last six races, sits third in the drivers' standings, and is 22 points behind Norris. Sainz hasn't generated the same type of success but has picked up points in nine of his last 10 races, which has helped Ferrari cut into the deficit.</p><p>"A result that puts us exactly where we want in the constructors," Sainz said.</p><p>Despite acknowledging that it's an "optimistic" target, Leclerc said postrace that Ferrari's goal this season is winning the constructors' title - something that's eluded the team since 2008.</p><p>Given Ferrari's recent pace and reliability - it even managed to correct an early issue with Sainz's car Sunday - the team is well positioned heading into the final five races and two sprints left on the calendar.</p><p>With Sergio Perez struggling, Ferrari could leapfrog Red Bull by next weekend. Chasing down McLaren will be more difficult. Ferrari got within 31 points of the British manufacturer after the Italian GP but found itself 75 points back following Singapore. Now, it trails by 48 points going into Mexico.</p><p>"That's the target," Leclerc said of being the top team. But as the two began maneuvering around the turn, Verstappen forced Norris wide, and both cars went off the track. Norris proceeded to pass Verstappen off track, and McLaren decided not to give the position back.</p><p>That decision wound up burning McLaren, as the stewards handed Norris a five-second penalty after the race. Norris managed to build only a four-second lead over Verstappen, which resulted in the two swapping places after the checkered flag, costing Norris a spot on the podium and valuable points.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

The team said postrace that it was confident Norris was ahead going into the corner, but it wasn't so clear when rewatching. The risk of not immediately handing the place was a weird gamble to justify for McLaren. Had Norris given the position back right away, there would have been more than enough laps left for Norris to try to overtake Verstappen again without issue, especially with the pace advantage he displayed.</p><p>The stewards determined Norris didn't have an advantage at the apex and was deemed to have gained a "lasting advantage" by leaving the track and overtaking Verstappen.</p><p>However, Norris didn't blame the strategy after the race.</p><p>"It's obviously not an easy decision; otherwise, it would have come a bit sooner," Norris said. "I tried. He also went off the track. If he goes off the track, (he) clearly went in too hard and gained an advantage for doing what he does. But I don't make the rules."</p><p>McLaren team principal Andrea Stella was emphatic that Norris acted appropriately and that the rules weren't applied correctly. He said the team didn't consider asking Norris to give the place back after reviewing their own video.</p><p>"My view is that the way the stewards interfered with a beautiful piece of motorsport was inappropriate," Stella said. "Both cars went off track, gained an advantage. It's a shame because it cost us a podium, it costs us a race in which we stayed patient after we were pushed off on the first lap."</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

Verstappen said the podium finish was a "great result" for the team and agreed with the stewards that Norris broke the rules by passing off the track.</p><p>"No, I don't (sympathize with McLaren)," Verstappen said. "They complain about a lot lately. It's very clear in the rules: outside the white line, you cannot pass."</p><p>Red Bull team principal Christian Horner admitted that Norris likely would've caught Verstappen again with his fresher tires. He also said he would've immediately given the place back to allow his driver to attack again if it were up to him.</p><p>"I think with the hindsight of what we've seen how these things played out, I think I would have (swapped positions) cause you can see the pace advantage that Lando had," Horner said.</p><p>After Sunday, Norris has one less race to chase down Verstappen, who now owns a 57-point lead.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

These races are my key to doing that."</p><h3>What's next?</h3><p>The F1 action will be rapid over the next few weeks as we're in the middle of a tripleheader. "There are a lot of good clubs out there.</p><p>"I don't think there's any secret formula. Sometimes you play well, and sometimes you don't, and it breaks your heart."</p><p>You can blame playoff randomness and the Phillies running into a red-hot Mets team for their playoff failure. The Phillies won the sixth-most contests in franchise history this year and sent eight players to the All-Star Game.</p><p>Philadelphia exceeded the luxury-tax threshold in four straight seasons and looks well on its way to blowing past the $241-million limit in 2025. Before making a move this winter, the Phillies' projected payroll sits at $258 million for next season, according to FanGraphs.</p><p>Harper, Trea Turner, Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, J.T. Realmuto, Nick Castellanos, and Kyle Schwarber are each set to make at least $20 million in 2025.</p><p>"I told Dave, since the day he arrived here: 'Your job is to figure out what you have to do to put a championship team on the field,'" Middleton told <a href="https://www.si.com/mlb/phillies-john-middleton-playoff-success">Stephanie Apstein of Sports Illustrated</a> earlier in October. Even if they don't make sizeable changes to the lineup, they should still score plenty of runs. </script></figure><p>The rotation projects to be strong again. Cristopher Sánchez is signed through at least 2028, though Ranger Suárez is eligible for free agency after next season. Taijuan Walker's future with the club remains in question. He struggled in his first two campaigns in Philly and is still owed $36 million over the next two seasons. But the goal is to win a World Series, and maybe the best way to accomplish that is to shake up a club that cooled off in the second half.</p><p>"We started fantastic. We were the best team in baseball in the first half, and everybody in baseball, and all the fans were saying, 'This is our year.' I don't know if expectations put added pressure, but one thing I know is that we didn't cross the finish line," Castellanos said.</p><p>Dombrowski should look to make some changes rather than run it back again. He opted to make limited adds after crashing out in the NLCS last season, instead signing Nola to an extension.</p><p>"We have the talent to win," Dombrowski said. "You can dissect however you want."</p><p>Reporters asked Harper after the NLDS loss what he thought the Phillies needed to succeed, but the star slugger directed the questions to the front office. Still, you have to believe both sides are feeling the urgency of the championship window starting to close.</p><p>"That's a job for Dave and John to figure out what they want to do," Harper said. </p><p>For the Phillies to improve this winter, they'll either have to ask ownership for increased commitment, or Dombrowski will need to get creative. While the payroll is already high for 2025, there's at least some long-term flexibility, with Realmuto, Schwarber, and Castellanos coming off the books after next season.</p><p>"(We) want to make the club better. We're not just looking to change faces," Dombrowski said. "We want championship players."</p><p>Middleton has shown he's willing to spend to win and is desperate to help Harper claim a championship. The owner signed off on $300-million deals for Harper and Turner. That works in Dombrowski's favor with how he builds a team.</p><p>"My great-great-grandchildren might be angry at me," Middleton told Apstein.</p><p>Juan Soto is the obvious difference-maker at the top of the offseason wish list. Handing out another significant contract is a tough sell to any ownership base, but if there's a player to roll the dice on, it's Soto.</p><p>Other top free agents like shortstop Willy Adames, third baseman Alex Bregman, and outfielders Teoscar Hernandez and Anthony Santander are options. Oakland Athletics outfielder Brent Rooker could be a trade option.</p><p>Whatever Philadelphia decides, Dombrowski isn't tipping his hand just yet.</p><p>"I don't think we need to add more star players," Dombrowski said. "We have as many stars as anyone in baseball. John is very accommodating and giving, but we're still working with a payroll.</p><p>"I'm not saying we won't get one, but I don't think it's a necessity."</p><p>Another option is for the Phillies to use their financial muscle by taking on a player with some term left on a deal that another club wants to unload. The St. Louis Cardinals will likely shed payroll this winter, potentially making Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, Miles Mikolas, and Willson Contreras available. Getting creative by taking on salary could also allow Philadelphia to land a player like Ryan Helsley or prospects who the team could keep or flip in another deal.</p><p>A number of other clubs might look to cut payroll due to the fallout of losing their TV deals with Bally Sports. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Twins are potentially set to be sold. Dombrowski should be working the phones to explore everything.</p><p>Harper wants to win to cement his legacy. Middleton wants to make Philadelphia a champion again. The pieces are there, but time is running out.</p>

This team has incredible momentum right now as A.J. Hinch has pressed all the right buttons and everyone on the roster is pulling on the same rope. Tarik Skubal might be the best pitcher in MLB right now, and despite the offense lacking real star power, Hinch has the ability to mix and match depending on the opposition's pitching. Detroit's playing with house money, and that's a dangerous thing for whoever has to face it. </p><p><strong>Area of concern: </strong>While it feels somewhat disrespectful to rank the Tigers last, we have our concerns with their ability to win a longer series with such limited starting pitching. Hinch already had to deploy "pitching chaos" in Game 2. Even with Skubal likely to start twice in the ALDS, it'll be tough to potentially get through five games. Hinch's decision in Game 2 to use rookie Jackson Jobe almost blew up in his face, so we'll see how much confidence the manager has in the right-hander in high leverage moving forward.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p><strong>Underrated player to watch:</strong> <em>Kerry Carpenter.</em> Expect to see a lot of Carpenter against the Guardians. The 27-year-old destroys right-handed pitching, posting a .994 OPS against righties in 264 plate appearances this season.</p><h3>7. He drove in two of the three runs Kansas City scored, while his elite glove and game-changing speed heavily influenced both wins. He's the type of dynamic player that can carry a team. The pitching staff is also very good, as Cole Ragans and Seth Lugo were excellent in their starts in Baltimore, while Michael Wacha enjoyed a strong season.</p><p><strong>Area of concern: </strong>Where will the offense come from if Witt isn't great? Kansas City's lineup struggled in September, scoring the fewest runs (74) and posting the worst OPS (.577) in the majors. The team went 14-for-64 with one extra-base hit and 14 strikeouts in two games during the wild-card series. Witt and Michael Massey combined for six of those hits.</p><p><strong>Underrated player to watch:</strong> <em>Lucas Erceg.</em> One of the best deadline acquisitions, Erceg gives the Royals an elite arm at the back end of the 'pen. The right-hander didn't allow a hit in 2 1/3 innings against the Orioles, striking out three, and he can be unleashed for multiple innings if needed.</p><h3>6. Opponents were in trouble whenever Cleveland held a lead late in the game. The Guardians have MLB's best closer in Emmanuel Clase, but the hidden gem has been rookie Cade Smith. The right-hander accrued 2.7 fWAR with a 1.91 ERA and 12.31 K/9 in 75 1/3 innings during the regular season.</p><p><strong>Area of concern: </strong>The Guardians were a slightly above-average offensive club during the regular season. Outside of José Ramírez and Josh Naylor, the lineup isn't overflowing with players who are likely to strike fear in the hearts of opposing pitchers. Cleveland sorely needs All-Star outfielder Steven Kwan to recapture his form at the plate after he hit .206 following the All-Star break.</p><p><strong>Underrated player to watch: </strong><em>Kyle Manzardo. </em>The rookie slugger found his stride in September, posting a .873 OPS with five home runs in 63 at-bats. Manzardo has prodigious power and is more than capable of delivering in big moments.</p><h3>5. The find-a-way Mets continue to provide magic. New York has been counted out a number of times this year but keeps finding a way to stay alive. Count the Mets out at your own peril. Getting Pete Alonso going would be a huge development. The slugging first baseman delivered the signature moment of his career with a go-ahead three-run home run in the ninth inning of Game 3 versus the Brewers.</p><p><strong>Area of concern: </strong>The bullpen showed a few cracks against the Brewers. New York relievers posted a 5.00 ERA in three games, which was the second-worst mark among the eight wild-card teams. Manager Carlos Mendoza had to use starter David Peterson to close out the series.</p><p><strong>Underrated player to watch: </strong><em>Tylor Megill. </em>The right-hander figured something out down the stretch, posting a 2-0 record with a 2.45 ERA and 38 strikeouts across his last seven regular-season appearances. Megill was sharp in the Mets' doubleheader against the Braves and will likely draw a start early in the NLDS. His ability to miss bats could be crucial against a lineup as talented as the Phillies.</p><h3>4. Aaron Judge is having the best season of his career, and Juan Soto is putting together an MVP-caliber campaign. Gerrit Cole looks to be back to his ace form after some early-season injury concerns, posting a 2.25 ERA over his final 10 starts. Carlos Rodón put together a solid bounce-back season, while Clarke Schmidt's return from injury late in the season gives New York further rotation depth.</p><p><strong>Area of concern: </strong>Judge needs to flip the switch in the postseason. He owns a .211/.310/.462 slash line in 44 playoff games and went 5-for-36 in the 2022 playoffs. The offense will be a serious question mark if Judge struggles. Although the Yankees led the AL in runs scored, Anthony Volpe, Gleyber Torres, and Alex Verdugo were all underwhelming offensively. Meanwhile, Anthony Rizzo will miss the ALDS with a hand injury.</p><p><strong>Underrated player to watch: </strong><em>Luke Weaver</em>.<strong> </strong>Weaver helped anchor the back end of the bullpen with Clay Holmes struggling in the closer role. A starter for the bulk of his career, Weaver posted a 2.89 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and 103 strikeouts in 84 innings as a reliever for the Yankees. He heads into the playoffs having thrown 11 consecutive scoreless innings with 24 strikeouts.</p><h3>3. Ohtani heads in the playoffs on an absolute heater, too, hitting an almost unbelievable .547/.586/1.057 with seven home runs over his last 12 games. </p><p><strong>Area of concern: </strong>The Dodgers' rotation has been decimated by injuries. Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow, and Gavin Stone are all out, leaving manager Dave Roberts in a precarious position. Los Angeles will need Walker Buehler to rediscover his past form after struggling to the tune of a 5.38 ERA in 16 regular-season starts. How will Yoshinobu Yamamoto handle his first postseason, and how much can the Dodgers expect from him? He's averaged just four innings and 70 pitches over his four starts since coming off the injured list last month.</p><p><strong>Underrated player to watch: </strong><em>Tommy Edman. </em>The Dodgers acquired the versatile Edman from the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline. Edman's been exactly as advertised in Los Angeles, providing a good glove at multiple spots to pair with consistently good at-bats.</p><h3>2. The Padres are deep, balanced, and can beat teams in a number of different ways. There are few easy outs for pitchers to navigate.</p><p><strong>Area of concern: </strong>Joe Musgrove's elbow injury is a major worry. Musgrove was forced to leave his start in the wild-card series against the Braves and dealt with elbow issues during the regular season. Yu Darvish will likely be slotted back into the starting rotation if Musgrove can't take the ball against the Dodgers.</p><p><strong>Underrated player to watch: </strong><em>Kyle Higashioka. </em>The veteran catcher already showed his flare for the dramatic in the division series, blasting a pair of home runs against the Braves. Higashioka is an excellent defensive backstop and is coming off the best offensive season of his career. Don't be surprised if he delivers again in a big moment.</p><h3>1. Philadelphia has come up short in each of the last two postseasons but possesses a battle-tested and healthy roster. Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola are historically great playoff pitchers, while Bryce Harper owns a career .996 OPS in 49 postseason games. The lineup can slug, and the rotation is elite.</p><p><strong>Area of concern:</strong><em> </em>The bullpen is once again the biggest cause for concern, but there's enough talent and swing-and-miss at the back end to finish off games. The Phillies looked like they were going to cruise to the World Series last season until their offense was completely neutralized after Game 3 of the NLCS. They'll need to ensure history doesn't repeat itself. Philadelphia will also need to make sure it's not complacent in the NLDS by looking too far ahead.</p><p><strong>Underrated player to watch:</strong> <em>Orion Kerkering.</em> The 23-year-old was a surprise to make the postseason roster last season after throwing just three MLB innings, but he should play a major role this time around. Kerkering struck out 74 over 63 innings during the regular season and posted a 1.65 ERA and 1.88 FIP over his last 17 appearances while also not surrendering a home run.</p>

The 65-year-old stepped away from managing the Cleveland Guardians at the end of last season due to health reasons. Francona said at the time that he didn't anticipate managing again.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Reds' reported hire is a major boost after the club underachieved in 2024, leading to Cincinnati firing skipper David Bell, who spent six seasons managing the team.</p><p>Francona is regarded as one of the best managers in MLB history. He owns a 1950-1672 career record across stops with the Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox, and Guardians. Francona won World Series titles with the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007. He also helped Cleveland win four division crowns in his 11 years with the organization and led the club to a World Series appearance in 2016.</p><p>The Reds have made the playoffs once (2020) in the last 11 seasons. </p>

The Astros have remarkably reached the ALCS in each of the last seven seasons, playing in the World Series four times, and winning twice.</p><p>This isn't the heavyweight Astros team of years past, but the championship core is still intact and playing well heading into the playoffs. Houston was one of the best home teams this season, going 46-35 at Minute Maid Park.</p><p>The Astros went 4-2 against former manager A.J. Hinch's Tigers in 2024. The Tigers are 43-38 on the road, and enter the playoffs on fire, going 17-8 in the final month of the regular season. They also were the only AL team to win at least 50 games at home, which bodes well for the club when the ALDS opens at Progressive Field on Saturday.</p><p>The Guardians, who haven't played in the ALCS since 2016, went 1-4 against the Astros this season. Cleveland did go 7-6 against the Tigers, but haven't played since July.</p>

<p>TORONTO - It was early April in Boston and Angels catcher Logan O'Hoppe was looking for something to do on an off day. He found himself at a familiar place.</p><p>O'Hoppe was outside Fenway Park when he used his phone to buy a $20 bleachers seat to catch the Red Sox series finale with the Orioles.</p><p>"I grew up - and still am - a huge baseball fan. I watch a lot of it. I love being around it," O'Hoppe told theScore in August. "Fenway Park is my favorite visiting park. I walked around a little bit and ended up flashing my player card and got on the Green Monster. I tried to pull some tricks and luckily it worked out.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"I texted my parents as I was walking through the concourse because I felt like I was 12 again."</p><p>O'Hoppe went unrecognized as he maneuvered around the cramped confines of the 112-year-old stadium. He admitted it was a cold night and he was "bundled up pretty good."</p><p>The Fenway trip was more than simply killing time on a day off; it had deeper meaning for O'Hoppe. Taking in the sport from a different vantage point allows him to connect with his past and lets him appreciate how far he's made it on his baseball journey.</p><p>"It was good to get that perspective because it's something that (can get) lost when you're in the middle of it," O'Hoppe said. "Just like any other job, you lose an outside perspective of it. I enjoyed eating a hot dog and watching (the game) as a fan. You feel that excitement again. I'm happy I saw that perspective of it and realigned my mind."</p><p>O'Hoppe grew up in Long Island, New York, and spent his formative years playing baseball and watching it at Yankee Stadium. He was drafted by Philadelphia in 2018 out of high school and was traded to L.A. at the 2022 deadline. He made his MLB debut in late 2022 and is now a key piece of the Angels' future.</p><p>O'Hoppe said his April visit to Fenway was the only one he was able to pull off as a fan this season, but it's something he's always trying to do when the opportunity presents itself.</p><p>"Every off day, I go look," O'Hoppe said.</p><h3>'I had a drink in the stands'</h3><p>Days after his 2015 season ended, Nolan Arenado grabbed his passport and jumped on a plane to Toronto to watch friend and former Rockies teammate Troy Tulowitzki and the Blue Jays take on the Rangers in the ALDS.</p><p>"I had a drink in the stands," Arenado, now a member of the Cardinals, recalled. They were busy. </p><p>Mets reliever Adam Ottavino also managed to catch a game that same postseason. Also on Colorado back then, Ottavino found himself in Queens to watch the Mets play in the 2015 World Series.</p><p>"Steven Matz was pitching, he's a friend of mine, so I watched him," Ottavino told me.</p><p>Both Arenado and Ottavino said they enjoyed watching the game from the stands, from that perspective. It served as a reminder of how grateful they are to be major leaguers.</p><p>"You watch a good at-bat and you're like, 'Damn, that's a really good at-bat,' or (you see) a great play, and then you're like, 'I think sometimes I have good at-bats and make good plays, too,'" Arenado said.</p><p>"It's hard to watch the game now the same (way) as before you played," Ottavino said. "Like, your brain just doesn't work the same, you don't enjoy it as much - you're too busy thinking about what you would throw, strategy stuff.</p><p>"But I think it's a little easier to do it in the ballpark than on TV. Even with first-class travel and five-star accommodations, demands on time are relentless. Players have only roughly 20 days off over the course of the summer, so it's understandable the majority use them to get away from baseball.</p><p>"The last place I would go," J.D. Martinez said of watching another team's game during the regular season.</p><p>"I'm spending the off day with my daughter and my wife," Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor said.</p><p>"I would never do that," Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman said about an off-day visit to a ballpark. "I've been playing a long time, and I play every day. I want a break. Sometimes you need a mental break - that's what days off are.</p><p>"It's not just physically but it's to give your mind a break. In today's game, there's so much information that sometimes you just need to shut off. Obviously, having a family and kids, I'm mostly on FaceTime; I have to play Roblox with my 7-year-old."</p><p>One problem for most of MLB's more notable players is that it'd be almost impossible to take in a game in the stands without being discovered - especially if you're the Yankees' 6-foot-7 captain.</p><p>"I've never done that. I think that'd be a little tough with my height, I might get recognized," Aaron Judge said, laughing.</p><p>"That'd be fun, but I'll wait. I'm a fan of the game, I love watching the game, but I'd rather just watch on TV until I'm retired," Judge added. "Take my family, take my kids, my off days (now) are a little booked up."</p><p>While most players I spoke with said they'd pass on watching live MLB action on their days off, many added they look forward to doing so when their careers are over. </p><p>Most former players won't have any trouble affording tickets, but those with eight years of service receive a gold card from MLB: a lifetime pass for two tickets to any regular-season game. "That's how I got into baseball: my dad had (Marlins) season tickets and we'd go as much as we could."</p><p>Arenado's got similar plans.</p><p>"I have a daughter and she's 2, so she's not old enough to remember anything right now," he said. "But one day when she's old enough, and if she wants to see where I used to play, I'll probably try to use it in Colorado."</p><p>If you're in Denver at a Rockies game in, say, 10 or 15 years, keep your eyes peeled for Arenado in the stands. </p>

I felt good all weekend, felt confident, maybe not so much in quali, but I got the job done," he said after the event.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Norris starts the race 59 points behind championship leader Max Verstappen, who qualified second. </p><p>"I'm happy to be on the front row if you look at where we came from yesterday," Verstappen said. "I'll take second." </p><p>Lewis Hamilton grabbed a surprise P3 as Mercedes locked out the second row. He's won in Singapore four times, but not since 2018.</p><p>"Qualifying has been a disaster for me all year long and I've been working and working and working, trying to get myself back up there," Hamilton said. His home-run trot ranks 269th fastest in MLB this season with an average speed of 29.54 seconds.</p><p>Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said postgame that he didn't believe there was any intent behind his reliever's pitch. It was the fourth time in 23 innings this season that Garabito's hit a batter, and Arozarena was the third Mariner hit that game.</p><p>"He got hit. I don't think (Garabito's) going to wait until the fifth or sixth pitch," Bochy said. "He's trying to go in there. It happens in baseball. We got hit in this series, too. So he went down the line and it was over. I didn't see a big deal about it."</p><p>The Mariners won the game 7-0 to stay within 2.5 games of the Minnesota Twins for the final wild-card spot. Seattle and Texas have three games remaining in their season series beginning Friday. </p>

<p>McLaren has come out of Formula 1's summer break looking great. </p><p>Lando Norris claimed pole position Saturday ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix with a blistering lap of 1:09.673. It's his fourth career pole.</p><p>"Amazing day. Nice to be back and start with a pole," Norris said. "I'm excited for tomorrow, I'm sure it's gonna be tough." </p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>After winning the first and only race of his career in Miami this May, Norris finished second four times in eight races.</p><p>Max Verstappen, who won the last three races at Zandvoort, will start second, while Oscar Piastri will open on the second row in third.</p><p>"The whole qualifying, we just lacked a bit of pace," Verstappen said. <p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/8267" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/8267">Vladimir Guerrero Jr.</a> seemingly adds another dollar to his next contract with every swing lately.</p><p>The Toronto Blue Jays star first baseman is one of MLB's hottest hitters, slashing .472/.538/.966 with 10 home runs and a league-leading 1.504 OPS in 24 games across the last 30 days.</p><p>Guerrero certainly looks to be turning into the prince that was promised, and he couldn't have picked a better time.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The 25-year-old has one more year of arbitration eligibility this winter before hitting free agency at the end of the 2025 season. Should Guerrero reach the open market, he'll be one of the most desired position players, if not the most desired, available.</p><p>The Blue Jays are expected to try to prevent Guerrero from wearing a different uniform. However, reaching a new deal won't be easy even though both parties have said they want to extend the relationship.</p><p>And despite general manager Ross Atkins and president Mark Shapiro saying they aim to compete for a championship in 2025, Toronto occupies the AL East basement this season and could be heading into a potential rebuild - or a retool if you prefer more optimistic language. The Blue Jays will need to be comfortable offering Guerrero a contract that'll shatter the franchise-record six-year, $150-million deal it gave George Springer in 2021. The team will also likely have to pick between extending Guerrero or fellow homegrown star Bo Bichette, who's in the midst of a career-worst campaign.</p><p>The Blue Jays need to decide where they stand on Guerrero before settling anything else this offseason - and there's an extensive list of things to do. Letting him play out next season without an extension in place seems like asking for trouble, especially if the club gets off to a slow start. If Toronto is out of contention near the trade deadline and Guerrero is unsigned, trading him becomes the best way to manage the asset.</p><p>So, what's a reasonable framework for Guerrero's next deal?</p><p>ESPN's Jeff Passan said last week on "<a href="https://twitter.com/FAN590/status/1822022156999331925">Blair and Barker</a>" that a first baseman wouldn't get a $300-plus million contract next offseason. </script></figure><p>Not only is Guerrero extremely talented, but he's also hitting free agency at age 26. Pujols, Cabrera, and Freeman were all in their 30s when they signed their deals. The closest comparable in age is Olson, who signed in 2022 well under market value rather than hit free agency. Alonso, however, has yet to match his 2019 rookie production of 53 homers and a career-best .941 OPS. </script></figure><p>With Guerrero expected to set the record for first basemen, where will his contract fall among the all-time richest deals?</p><p>Shohei Ohtani's $700-million pact is in a different stratosphere, even if the total dollars are a bit deceptive considering he's deferring $680 million. The Blue Jays were in on Ohtani right up until he chose the Los Angeles Dodgers - we all remember the plane fiasco - so ownership is clearly willing to spend big for the right player. </script></figure><p>Devers' deal is probably Guerrero's best comparison and will likely be what his agency tries to match or even eclipse when it comes time to negotiate.</p><p>Devers is a homegrown star for the Red Sox. He won a World Series with the club and was looked upon as being the anchor of the next great Boston teams as the club entered a retooling. Prior to his final year of team control at age 26, Devers inked a 10-year, $313.5-million extension that included his $17.5-million salary in his final arbitration year. The Red Sox weren't willing to play out the final season of his contract and allow him to test free agency. Devers plays a more valuable position at third base and has become an adequate defender despite some early defensive troubles. He ranked <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/shohei-ohtani-has-most-popular-jersey-at-2024-all-star-break">17th out of all MLB players</a> in jersey sales at the All-Star break, has several Canadian endorsement deals, and has been the biggest draw for fans in what's otherwise been a lost season. Guerrero was also born in Canada. And while he won't be representing the national team, something about that resonates with the fan base - in a city that has far too often watched its star players head south when given the opportunity.</p><p>These additional factors give Guerrero leverage when trying to sell his value to the franchise. He's not just going to get paid for his on-field contributions. He's much more than that.</p><p>There will likely be no shortage of suitors should Guerrero reach free agency. The New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, and San Francisco Giants could all have a need for the position and be a fit for him. Someone will pay. We just have to wait and see how much.</p>
