The reigning Premier League champions went on a breathtaking summer spree, breaking the British transfer record not once, but twice. They spent over £400 million on new talent and, at least on paper, significantly improved what was already the best team in England by a healthy margin. Actually fitting all of the team's expensive new forwards together in a balanced system won't be easy - it might be impossible - but that's a nice luxury for Arne Slot. Any other manager would love to have the same "problem." Liverpool, who balanced out their lavish signings with some impressive sales, are younger and more athletic than last year in most areas.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><figure class="article-segment--table"><div class="table-responsive"><table>

Depth at center-back is a genuine issue that could hurt the Reds, but they have the ability to outscore what has looked like a somewhat fragile and exposed backline early in the season. And they can always address that area in January, which isn't that far away. If there's any money left.</p><h3>Losers: Newcastle</h3><p>Liverpool's triumphs in the transfer window often came at the expense of Newcastle. There was, of course, the ugly Isak saga, which pretty much torpedoed the Magpies' entire summer and put them in a hole that was partly of their own making. Had they sold the Swede earlier instead of waiting until deadline day for the exact same outcome, they would've had much more time to respond to the loss of their best player and most prolific scorer. They tried to sign Jorgen Strand Larsen, but Wolves wouldn't budge. Liam Delap and Benjamin Sesko were reportedly on the radar, too, before moving elsewhere.</p><p>They also splashed £55 million on Yoane Wissa when nobody else was in the race for the Brentford forward, overpaying after he delivered a career-best season in 2024-25. Aside from truly unproven prospects, most transfers involve some level of paying for past performance. That's baked into the process. But Wissa just turned 29, and is unlikely to deliver multiple years of similar high-level output that such a fee would suggest.</p><h3>Winners: Arsenal</h3><p>Mikel Arteta got everything he could've possibly asked for this summer. Arsenal, chided for not having a proper No. 9 who could elevate the team to title winners, spent big on Viktor Gyokeres; Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke provide flair and creativity; Martin Zubimendi, a former Liverpool target, is an upgrade in the deep-lying midfield role on last season's options; Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie arrived to provide even more options in defense for a manager who would seemingly roll out 10 center-backs at once if he could. After finishing second in three consecutive seasons, Arsenal are deeper and better equipped to get over the hump this time around.</p><p>That could be a blessing or a curse for Arteta, depending on how you view it - there can be no excuses for a trophyless season - but, sitting here in early September, it's objectively a positive thing for the north London side.</p><h3>Loser: Bundesliga</h3><p>The Premier League flexed its financial muscle yet again - more on that later - and Germany's top flight was the primary target. The Bundesliga got picked apart this summer, with Wirtz, Ekitike, Woltemade and Sesko all going to England for huge fees. Xavi Simons, Jamie Gittens, Jeremie Frimpong, Lois Openda, and Piero Hincapie all left, too. Bundesliga clubs now prefer to sell abroad, knowing that the financial reward is greater beyond the borders. There's nothing inherently <em>wrong</em> with that; money in the coffers is great for the selling clubs, after all. But a healthy bank account doesn't score goals, win matches, and get fans excited about coming to the stadium.</p><h3>Winners: Andrea Agnelli, Florentino Perez</h3><p>As the architects of the infamous Super League project, Agnelli and Perez are chiefly to blame for the bungled rollout. There's no denying that they totally blew it. But it's also become increasingly clear in the intervening years that the underlying principle was sound. The ex-Juventus president <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/andrea-agnelli-quit-board-roles-stellantis-exor-2023-01-18/#:~:text=%22I%20believed%20and%20still%20believe,the%20others%2C%22%20he%20added.">claimed</a> the sport was heading toward an "inexorable decline," and suggested drastic action was required to stop the Premier League from hoarding the best talent and "marginalizing" other leagues. He was branded a heretic. Let's check in on that prediction now, shall we?</p><p>England's top flight, powered by its domestic and international broadcast deals, set a new record by spending over £3 billion on summer transfers. That was more than La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1, and the Bundesliga combined. The Premier League was responsible for 19 of the window's 25 most expensive deals, and finished with a net spend of over £1 billion, according to figures from Transfermarkt. Serie A finished second in that category ... at €100 million.</p><p>Like it or not, a "Super League" already exists.</p><h3>Losers: Barcelona</h3><p>Barcelona extended Lamine Yamal's contract, locking up the teen superstar until 2031 on a deal that could make him the club's top earner. That could eventually prove to be the single most important move of the entire summer for any team. But, aside from that, it was an underwhelming window for the La Liga champions. Barca were seconds away from reaching the Champions League final last season, and should've been looking to push themselves over the top in a bid to go for the treble this year. </p><p>Instead, it was mostly crickets for the famously cash-strapped club. Joan Garcia was a nice addition in goal, even though it created a firestorm involving incumbent 'keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Marcus Rashford should be very motivated to succeed during his loan spell in Catalonia, but he's a clear downgrade from Nico Williams, who shunned Barca to stay at Athletic Bilbao. If anything, Barca probably got worse in one key area, letting veteran center-back Inigo Martinez leave for Saudi Arabia and not replacing him. They're putting <em>a lot</em> of faith in Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araujo's ability to stay fit, which is more than a little worrying.</p><p>To make matters worse, eternal rivals Real Madrid reloaded in a significant way this summer, rebuilding their backline with Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alvaro Carreras, while also securing Argentine starlet Franco Mastantuono's coveted signature.</p><h3>Other winners and losers</h3><p><strong>Winner: </strong>Reclamation projects. This was a great window for players looking to rejuvenate stagnating careers. Did anybody in the sport have a worse summer than Ten Hag? The Dutch coach took over Bayer Leverkusen in May, promptly watched on as most of the team's best and most influential players departed, and then got sacked just three games into his tenure. This was supposed to be the job that resuscitated his tarnished image after a dismal Manchester United stint. Instead, it made things even worse.</p><p><strong>Winner: </strong>Transfer insiders. Here we go! The trademark slogan of Fabrizio Romano, the world's preeminent transfer journalist, has already been a staple of the lexicon for several years. But during a window rife with protracted sagas that involved hundreds of incremental, daily updates, he and several others were omnipresent, providing constant updates to their millions of followers and capitalizing on social media monetization in a big way.</p><p><strong>Loser</strong>: Pep Guardiola's heart rate. It might be a good thing that the Manchester City manager doesn't have any hair, because watching Gianluigi Donnarumma try to pass the ball out of the back probably would've made the notoriously animated coach pull it out on the touchline. Guardiola has been open about his plan to take an extended break after leaving Man City, and another stressful season might push him closer to expediting that plan.</p><p><strong>Winner</strong>: Major League Soccer. MLS teams kept one-upping each other this summer. The league's incoming transfer record was broken three times in a matter of months, culminating with Son Heung-min's celebrated move to LAFC. Thomas Muller then added more star power by joining the Vancouver Whitecaps. In total, MLS clubs spent around $336 million on transfers, nearly doubling the previous annual high.</p>

The rich get richer.</p><h3>Muddying the waters? 🤔</h3><p><em>Strasbourg sign Ben Chilwell</em></p><p>Multi-club ownership is becoming increasingly prevalent in modern soccer, but few clubs use the tool to their advantage quite as blatantly as Chelsea, who sent left-back Chilwell to sister team Strasbourg on deadline day. The French squad is owned by the same BlueCo consortium that operates the London-based giants. Several players have made the identical switch this summer. Chelsea are treating Strasbourg as a feeder team where they can both hoard talent away from other interested clubs, and use deals between the two to help balance their own books. Manchester City, through the City Football Group, have used similar tactics in the past. It's not technically against any rules, but detractors claim it's bad for the integrity of the sport and the transfer market. It's hard to stomach these kinds of moves when Crystal Palace, for example, get kicked out of the Europa League for their affiliation with Lyon. Where is the line? It's becoming ever harder to find it.</p><h3>Arsenal trust the process 🤞</h3><p><em>Arsenal sign Piero Hincapie</em></p><p>Mikel Arteta is committed to the bit. The Arsenal manager believes that grinding out results on the back of a stingy defense is the best way to win matches and, eventually, trophies. It's not uncommon to see the Gunners line up with four central defenders across the backline and two, or even three, "defensive" midfielders in front of them. That's precisely what he did in Sunday's 1-0 loss to Liverpool - although, in his defense, part of that was enforced because of Martin Odegaard's injury issues. Still, Arteta wants to win with an attritional style that wears opponents down into dust. All of that leads to his latest signing. Hincapie is a big, strong, left-footed center-back, not unlike some of the players already at the club, and will provide even more aerial presence, which will certainly make set-piece coach Nicolas Jover very happy. How many defenders can you realistically put on the field at once and still win? We might find out.</p><h3>Man United take big Ls 💸</h3><p><em>Napoli sign Rasmus Hojlund<br>Real Betis sign Antony</em></p><p>There's plenty of blame to go around for Manchester United's extended malaise, but sometimes the simplest explanation is the most effective: The Red Devils have done a terrible job of recruiting in recent years. Their deals for Rasmus Hojlund and Antony cost around €170 million combined, and both players are now gone after contributing virtually nothing to the club over multiple seasons. Together, the pair scored 19 Premier League goals. Woof.</p><p>Even for an institution as popular and valuable as Manchester United, repeated financial mistakes take a toll. Antony and Hojlund have now been shipped to Real Betis (permanently) and Napoli (on loan with an obligation), respectively, with United recouping a small fraction of what they paid. That closes the book on one of the worst signings in Manchester United history and one of the remnants of Erik ten Hag's disastrous reign.</p><h3>Guehi move collapses ❌</h3><p><em>Liverpool fail to sign Marc Guehi</em></p><p>What would deadline day be without some twists and turns at the 11th hour? Liverpool had everything in place to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace for a reported £35-million fee, but the Eagles started waffling after their own move for a replacement - Igor Julio of Brighton &amp; Hove Albion - fell apart at the last minute. Guehi, 25, would've been a perfect fit for Arne Slot's team. He's athletic enough to cover large open spaces in transition, something Liverpool have been susceptible to conceding early in the season, and is comfortable on the ball. With Ibrahima Konate slated to become a free agent at the end of the season, Liverpool wanted to be proactive by bolstering their backline with someone who could conceivably become their future captain. This would've been a masterful move, but it didn't come to fruition due to circumstances out of Liverpool's control.</p><h3>Round 2: Rabiot vs. Rowe 🥊</h3><p><em>AC Milan sign Adrien Rabiot</em></p><p>Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe were immediately put up for sale by Marseille after getting into a violent altercation in August. Roberto De Zerbi described it as a "bar fight" the likes of which he'd never seen inside a locker room. Rowe was quickly shipped off to Bologna. Rabiot, meanwhile, joined Milan, where he'll reunite with Massimiliano Allegri after the pair previously worked together at Juventus. All pretty standard stuff, right? The delicious irony: AC Milan and Bologna are set to lock horns in their first match coming out of the international break Sept. 14. You couldn't script it any better.</p><h3>World Cup top of mind 🏆</h3><p><em>Atalanta sign Yunus Musah<br>Aston Villa sign Harvey Elliott</em></p><p>Whenever there's a major international tournament on the horizon, transfers take on added meaning. Players who otherwise might consider staying at their existing clubs despite a lack of playing time are more eager to secure a move that will guarantee them minutes - and thus a better chance of impressing their respective international managers.</p><p>Musah, who was likely to be pushed way down the AC Milan pecking order after multiple high-profile arrivals at San Siro, needs to show Mauricio Pochettino that he deserves to be a vital member of the United States men's national team in 2026. He can't do that from the bench. Harvey Elliott, very much on the outside of the England scene looking in, was almost certainly going to rot on the bench at Liverpool this season if he stayed. Instead, he should get plenty of opportunities after agreeing to join Aston Villa in a deal that could end up being worth £35 million.</p><p>And then there's Kobbie Mainoo, who reportedly asked Manchester United to let him leave on loan so he could impress England boss Thomas Tuchel rather than sit on the sidelines at Old Trafford. Ruben Amorim denied his request. This can now go one of two ways: Either the young midfielder uses the refusal as fuel, which Amorim is surely hoping, or this whole situation sours and we're sitting here in January having the exact same conversation. Given their track record, do you trust Man United to make it work?</p><h3>Chelsea finally offload Jackson 👋</h3><p><em>Bayern Munich sign Nicolas Jackson</em></p><p>He took the scenic route, but Jackson finally gets the switch to Bayern Munich that he wanted after an on-again, off-again saga that surely could've been sorted out well before deadline day. The Senegalese striker traveled to Germany last week to complete his move from Chelsea, only for the Blues to call off the deal after Liam Delap's injury. Jackson's agent used multiple social media posts to make it clear that his client wouldn't return to London as instructed, which essentially forced Chelsea to find another striker. Bayern are getting a capable backup who can give Harry Kane more chances to keep his 32-year-old legs fresh for the games that really matter this season.</p><h3>Spurs add another forward 💥</h3><p><em>Tottenham sign Randal Kolo Muani</em></p><p>Kolo Muani wanted to return to Juventus after spending the second half of last season on loan in Turin, but after Juve and PSG went back and forth all summer haggling over the structure of the deal, the French team finally pulled the plug. That allowed Spurs to swoop in and land the France international on a straight loan for €5 million. This is an extremely low-risk move for Tottenham that could deliver big rewards. Kolo Muani is agile and versatile. At Juve, he showed off the scoring prowess that made PSG spend around €90 million to sign him in the first place. Thomas Frank suddenly has a bevy of exciting attacking options after adding Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons to his team this summer. There are a lot of mouths to feed up front for Spurs, but that's a good issue to have for a team that'll be competing on four different fronts this season.</p><h3>2 for the price of 1 🧠</h3><p><em>Juventus sign Lois Openda, Edon Zhegrova</em></p><p>Speaking of Juve, the total outlay for the now-collapsed Kolo Muani deal reportedly hovered around the €60-million mark, with PSG seeking guarantees that an initial loan would become permanent. For a club that needs to watch every penny it spends, that's a lot, even if Kolo Muani would've been a very nice permanent addition. He's remarkably consistent for the Gunners, and creating goals for his team <em>should</em> be easier with Viktor Gyokeres - rather than, say, a defensive midfielder like Mikel Merino - spearheading the frontline.</p><p><strong>Nesci</strong>: Declan Rice. It's not uncommon for a player to take home the PFA honor without winning the league title - Salah did exactly that just a few years ago - but being part of a championship-winning side obviously strengthens your case. While Saka is Arsenal's best player, Rice is the engine that powers Arteta's team. The service should also improve for Salah after the signings of Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, and Jeremie Frimpong. Even with taking time off for Egypt's Africa Cup of Nations campaign, Salah is well-positioned for another scoring title.</p><p><strong>Nesci</strong>: Haaland. By his otherworldly standards, scoring 22 league goals last season was a letdown. Expect the insatiable Norwegian to stay healthy this year and come back with a vengeance. Salah's AFCON participation does give Haaland the edge for me.</p><h3>Best signing</h3><p><strong>Rouse</strong>: Rayan Cherki. Cherki might need time to adjust, but he could already be the most technically gifted player in the league. Manchester City paying just €36 million for the playmaker, who turns 22 on Sunday, is frankly ridiculous.</p><p><strong>Nesci</strong>: Wirtz. There will be several others who offer better value relative to their price tag, but Wirtz is such an enchanting talent that even his monstrous transfer fee won't hold him back. The 22-year-old German is one of the few players who can justify the potential €150 million that Liverpool dropped to acquire him from Bayer Leverkusen.</p><h3>Worst signing</h3><p><strong>Rouse</strong>: Armando Broja. Although there will be more expensive flops this season, how have Burnley not gotten the hint that Broja, who'll represent his fifth Premier League club in the last five years, isn't up to standard? The 23-year-old cost around £15 million to sign from Chelsea.</p><p><strong>Nesci</strong>: Jamie Gittens. This has little to do with Gittens himself and speaks more to Chelsea's hoarding. There will be worse newcomers than the 21-year-old this campaign, but the Blues could end up paying £52 million for a raw player who needs top-level minutes to develop. Can Chelsea offer Gittens that? He'll battle with Pedro Neto and Estevao on the wing. Joao Pedro can also occupy that spot. Chelsea are still chasing Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons, too. The summer exodus of many experienced and well-respected players from the club has only compounded that early unrest. The Irons could be in relegation trouble.</p><p><strong>Nesci</strong>: Nuno Espirito Santo. After the incredible highs of last season, it's not hard to envision a scenario where Nottingham Forest get off to a slow start, especially with the added strain of balancing their Europa League commitments with the demands of the Premier League. Evangelos Marinakis is one of the most volatile owners in the game, and he's already clashed very publicly with Nuno before. The ingredients are all there.</p><h3>Breakout star</h3><p><strong>Rouse</strong>: It's easy to forget about Oscar Bobb, a skillful and composed attacker with an exceptionally high ceiling. The 22-year-old Norwegian seemed set for an important role at Manchester City before he broke his leg on the eve of last season. He could be set for a big campaign this time around.</p><p><strong>Nesci</strong>: Estevao already looks like a phenom, and I'm hopeful that 16-year-old preseason standout Rio Ngumoha will get some opportunities at Liverpool this year. Still, Charalampos Kostoulas is my pick here. Given their track record with talent identification, any time Brighton decide to spend €35 million on a largely unknown teenager, we should all take notice. The 18-year-old Greek forward could be the next great success story of the club's scouting network.</p><h3>Biggest surprise</h3><p><strong>Rouse</strong>: David Moyes expressed his irritation at Everton's failure to get deals over the line earlier in the summer, but the Scot's return last January and the new stadium have lifted the club's mood. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall could be a low-key great signing.</p><p><strong>Nesci</strong>: Liverpool's slow start. Arne Slot's reigning champions are better on paper than last year, but preseason has exposed some vulnerabilities, particularly on the counterattack. Crystal Palace took full advantage of Liverpool's high full-backs and exploited big open spaces in midfield during the Community Shield. Fellow big boys Benjamin Sesko, Thierno Barry, and Gyokeres have now joined the party. Diminutive, tricky forwards are brilliant to watch, but there's something fun about the shift back toward imposing No. 9s leading the line. The countdown is on.</em></p><h3>Opening whistle: Parsing key transfers 🧐</h3><p>The summer transfer market is invariably viewed through the lens of club soccer. Teams are tinkering, retooling, or reloading entirely in the hopes of reaching their targets during the upcoming season, while players themselves are looking to take the next step in their respective careers. But don't discount the impact the World Cup has on these decisions. In many cases, transfers are completed explicitly with the tournament in mind. It happens every time a major international event rolls around.</p><p>This window has been no different. </p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Son Heung-min, after a decade at Tottenham Hotspur, realized he was being relegated to a lesser role at the club and opted to join LAFC in Major League Soccer, where he could conceivably play every minute at club level before leading South Korea at the World Cup next year. Marcus Rashford, instead of rotting on the bench at Manchester United, will play regularly at Barcelona. Conversely, Nico Williams, wary of either not being registered or not getting enough minutes with the Catalan club, spurned Barca's advances in favor of staying with the sure thing at Athletic Bilbao.</p><p>Sometimes the grass isn't greener. Americans Tim Weah and Johnny Cardoso need strong seasons after moving to Marseille and Atletico Madrid, respectively, to bolster their case for a starting spot on Mauricio Pochettino's team. Canada's Jonathan David should benefit from swapping Lille for Italian giants Juventus. If Rayan Cherki settles quickly at Manchester City, he could convince Didier Deschamps that he deserves the coveted role as France's primary playmaker. Dean Huijsen always looked destined to shine for Spain, but his new status as a starting center-back for Real Madrid only increases that likelihood. Jordan Henderson, somewhat inexplicably, still has a place in the England setup under Thomas Tuchel, a position that's probably been strengthened by his move back to the Premier League with Brentford.</p><p>The inverse is also true. Some players have made moves that, at least on paper, are detrimental to their World Cup hopes.</p><p>Mateo Retegui, Italy's nominal No. 9, ran away with the Serie A Golden Boot last season, scoring 25 league goals for Atalanta. He then promptly moved to Saudi club Al-Qadsiah this summer. Theo Hernandez, France's best left-back, ditched AC Milan for Al-Hilal. We won't begrudge any player chasing an enormous payday - get what you can, while you can - but the trade-off is obvious. Perhaps Joao Felix, now at Al-Nassr, can prove us wrong.</p><p>We're watching this space with great interest until the window closes Sept. 1.</p><h3>North American notebook 🇺🇸🇨🇦🇲🇽</h3><p><em>What's the latest with the three co-hosts?</em></p><p><strong>United States</strong>: Several glaring questions surround Pochettino's squad after a disastrous Nations League showing in March was followed by a largely uninformative Gold Cup. The U.S. doesn't have another competitive fixture until the World Cup, so Pochettino, hired at a huge expense to take the USMNT to the next level, will only have friendlies to figure out his best XI. A good place to start is between the sticks. Matt Freese had an uneven Gold Cup, potentially opening the door for namesake Matt Turner to regain his place as the No. 1 netminder. Turner's recent move back to MLS with New England will give him the minutes he's sorely been missing in 2025. Bayern are hopeful the 24-year-old can return to the pitch at the end of October, which would give him over seven months to regain full fitness and sharpness before he captains Canada at the World Cup on home soil. Jesse Marsch has turned Canada into a competitive team, but the ceiling is capped as long as the nation's best player is on the sidelines. Davies is one of the world's most explosive left-backs, and (spoiler alert) no other Canadian can single-handedly raise the level of Marsch's team in the same way.</p><p><strong>Mexico</strong>: Despite winning both major titles on offer to them in 2025 - the Nations League in March and the Gold Cup in July - El Tri are still far from convincing right now. This remains a team in transition. But Javier Aguirre has steadied the ship after a tumultuous period of managerial upheaval, and in Gilberto Mora, Mexico possesses one of the game's genuine teen phenoms. The 16-year-old midfielder, who played 75 minutes in the Gold Cup final, is a breathtaking talent. A daring dribbler, the Tijuana sensation dances past would-be tacklers and shows the kind of on-ball composure that belies his youth. He's a game-changer in the mold of fellow wunderkind Lamine Yamal, and Mexico needs to start building around him going into 2026.</p><h3>Rising and falling 📈📉</h3><p><em>Which teams, players, and coaches have been trending up or down?</em></p><p><strong>Haaland's World Cup chances </strong>📈</p><p>Erling Haaland, now 25, has never played in a major international tournament at senior level. That's finally poised to change. Norway is on track to reach its first World Cup since 1998 after a perfect start to its qualification campaign. The Norwegians have won all four of their matches thus far, scoring 13 goals in the process - Haaland has four of them - and conceding just twice.</p><p>Included amongst those victories was a 3-0 dismantling of Italy that has put Norway in full control of its own destiny in Group I of UEFA qualifying. Nobody wants to see Haaland and compatriot Martin Odegaard featured on another pre-tournament list that highlights the best players to miss the World Cup.</p><p><strong>Neymar's World Cup dream</strong> 📉</p><p>Neymar desperately wants one last crack at winning the World Cup. The concerns are understandable. Cramming 104 games into 39 days across three countries sounds like a logistical nightmare, and adding 16 teams threatens to dilute the overall quality of the product and take some sheen off the illustrious tournament - for what it's worth, even a "bad" World Cup game is still a World Cup game, so the latter shouldn't be an issue.</p><p>On the flip side, the most obvious benefit is already being realized. Nations that would otherwise have little to no chance of qualifying will now get to be part of the action. Uzbekistan and Jordan have already booked first-time tickets; Cape Verde has a chance to beat out Cameroon in Africa; Indonesia, coached by Patrick Kluivert, is in the mix in Asia; New Caledonia is already assured of a place in the intercontinental playoffs. FIFA's motivations for supersizing the World Cup were obviously monetary, but this is one positive, if unintended, consequence.</p><h3>Quick free-kicks 💥</h3><p><em>What else is catching the eye?</em></p><p><strong>Club World Cup lessons</strong>: Let's give Gianni Infantino <em>some</em> credit. The Club World Cup, buoyed by vibrant fans and shocking upsets, was more fun than anyone expected. But concerns about player welfare came into sharper focus as the oppressive U.S. summer heat wreaked havoc. Matches were routinely played in searing 90-plus degree conditions, with multiple players admitting it had adverse effects on their health and performance. How could it not? FIFA has to balance the well-being of players, fans, staff, and hordes of volunteers with the considerations of the global television audience - precedence suggests the governing body will prioritize the latter, despite the efforts of various player unions. It's tricky, we get it. At the absolute least, how about we don't schedule the marquee matches of the tournament for the hottest times of the day? Take the easy win.</p><p><strong>Last dance for Messi, CR7</strong>: This sentiment will only grow as the tournament draws near, but it's impossible to think about the competition without reminding ourselves that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the totemic superstars of the last two decades - and arguably ever - will grace the sport's grandest stage for the last time. Ronaldo will be 41 by the time the World Cup begins, while Messi, still the talisman for reigning champion Argentina, turns 39 during the competition.</p><p><strong>Gattuso's rescue mission</strong>: It's been almost 20 years since Italy last featured in a World Cup knockout match. That's absurd. The Azzurri followed up their fourth title in 2006 with limp group-stage exits in 2010 and 2014, and then outdid themselves by failing to qualify altogether for the last two editions. They're now in legitimate danger of making it three straight. A brutal start to qualifying against the aforementioned Norwegians led Italy to sack Luciano Spalletti and replace him with Gennaro Gattuso. It was an act of pure desperation for a nation flirting with more humiliation. Barring a rapid turnaround under the ex-midfielder, Italy will likely need to navigate another playoff to make the World Cup. What could possibly go wrong?</p><p><strong>Let's get down to business</strong>: Over 500 World Cup qualifying matches have already been played across the various confederations since the cycle began in 2023, but things start to really heat up now. Beginning with the September international break, there are qualifying windows for three consecutive months before the tournament draw is held in December. Cincinnati will receive $200,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM), $100,000 in 2026 GAM, and a conditional $100,000 in 2026 GAM from Vancouver.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Muller isn't immediately a Designated Player in Vancouver, but his contract includes a DP option for 2026.</p><p>"I'm looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship," Muller <a href="https://www.whitecapsfc.com/news/tm13">said</a>. "I've heard great things about the city, but first and foremost, I'm coming to win. That list includes 13 Bundesliga titles, six German Cups, and two Champions League crowns.</p><p>He racked up 250 goals and 276 assists in 756 appearances across all competitions for the Bavarian side.</p><p>Muller also earned 131 caps for Germany. He won the Golden Boot as the top scorer at the 2010 World Cup and then helped Germany lift the trophy four years later in Brazil.</p>

<p>Las Vegas will host the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Dec. 5, sources told <a href="https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/45854252/las-vegas-host-fifa-world-cup-draw-december-sources">ESPN</a>.</p><p>The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The expanded tournament will feature 48 teams for the first time.</p><p>Vegas, despite not being a host city for matches next summer, was selected for the draw after venues in both Canada and Mexico were ruled out, according to ESPN sources.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The draw will divide the 48 participating nations into 12 groups of four.</p><p>Pedro Cedillo, an executive at Mexican club Pachuca, told ESPN that he expects Las Vegas to put on the ceremony later this year.</p><p>"Dec. 5, if I'm not mistaken, is precisely the day the draw takes place, or at the beginning of December," he said. "I understand it will be in Las Vegas, and that's where we need to be present to provide information about the city of Pachuca, the state of Hidalgo, and the two venues we have."</p><p>ESPN originally reported that Sphere, the state-of-the-art entertainment arena that opened in 2023, was considered the front-runner to stage the draw. But sources close to Sphere later confirmed that the venue will not host the event.</p><p>When the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, the draw took place at the Las Vegas Convention Center. That venue is already booked this time around, with <a href="https://www.vegasmeansbusiness.com/destination-calendar/?bounds=false&amp;view=grid&amp;sort=date&amp;filter_venues%5B0%5D=31137&amp;filter_date_start=12%2F4%2F2025&amp;filter_date_end=12%2F5%2F2025">multiple events</a> scheduled.</p><p>The 2026 World Cup kicks off June 11.</p>

<p>Versatile Canadian international <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///seri/players/148092" href="https://thescore.com/seri/players/148092">Tajon Buchanan</a> made his move to Villarreal permanent Tuesday, signing a five-year contract with the Spanish club.</p><p>Buchanan spent the second half of last season on loan at Villarreal from Italian side Inter Milan, and the Yellow Submarine triggered an option to keep the 26-year-old. </p><p>Villarreal will pay €9 million to add Buchanan on a permanent basis, and Inter will retain a 20% sell-on clause as part of the deal, according to transfer insider <a href="https://x.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1948423782026088515">Fabrizio Romano</a>.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

He scored one league goal and provided two assists in that time, helping Villarreal finish fifth and qualify for the Champions League.</p><p>"He possesses physical power and speed when carrying the ball ... with a knack for getting into scoring positions and the ability to provide assists," the Spanish club <a href="https://villarrealcf.es/en/tajon-buchanan-is-now-yellow/">said</a> in a statement.</p><p>Now fully recovered from a fractured tibia suffered in 2024, Buchanan is once again a key part of Canada's national team ahead of next year's World Cup. He's earned 51 caps for his country, including six appearances during this summer's slate of matches - friendlies and the Gold Cup - during which he scored four goals.</p><p>"I found my joy for football again," Buchanan told Canadian media in June after his loan spell in Spain, according to <a href="https://www.tsn.ca/soccer/inter-milan-villareal-agree-on-transfer-fee-for-canadian-tajon-buchanan-1.2339055">Matthew Scianitti of TSN</a>. "That helped me get back to the way I know I can play."</p>

<p>Arsenal concluded their arduous pursuit of <a href="https://thescore.com/chlg/players/101459">Viktor Gyokeres</a> on Saturday.</p><p>The most prolific goal-scorer across Europe's top tiers in the 2024-25 campaign joined the Gunners from Sporting CP for an initial €63.5-million fee, with a further €10 million in bonuses, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6510398/2025/07/25/arsenal-transfer-viktor-gyokeres-sporting-deal/">The Athletic's David Ornstein</a>.</p><p>Gyokeres's long-term contract in north London will run until June 2030, Ornstein adds.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The 27-year-old will wear the No. 14 shirt, a number made iconic at Arsenal by club legend Thierry Henry, and immediately join the squad on its preseason tour in Asia.</p><p>"Viktor has so many qualities," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta <a href="https://www.arsenal.com/news/viktor-gyokeres-signs-arsenal">said</a>. "He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goal-scoring numbers at club and international levels. He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat."</p><p>Negotiations with Sporting weren't straightforward throughout this process.</p><p>Gyokeres didn't report to preseason training in an effort to push the deal through. He believed a gentleman's agreement was in place with the Portuguese side, which allowed him to leave if a club arrived with an offer worth an initial €60 million.</p><p>Sporting president Frederico Varandas eventually verbally agreed to an overall €73.5-million package for the Swedish striker, but talks still weren't over between the two clubs. Sporting quibbled with the add-on payments tied into the offer to ensure there was a clear possibility of receiving the extra €10 million. Gyokeres' agent waived his commission to help get the deal done, Ornstein reports.</p><p>Gyokeres emerged as Arsenal's top center-forward target this summer as Arteta identified the position as the main area that needed an upgrade for his team to make the leap from runners-up to Premier League champions.</p><p>Arsenal have finished second in England's top flight in each of the last three seasons, with their lack of a true No. 9 often cited as their biggest weakness.</p><p>Gyokeres has developed into one of the most prolific players in Europe since moving to Sporting from Coventry City in 2023. He scored 54 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions last season as Sporting won a domestic double.</p><p>"I always want to score," Gyokeres <a href="https://www.arsenal.com/news/gyokeres-i-cant-wait-score-arsenal-colours">said</a>. "To be a part of this club and to score in this kit and with this badge in front of all the supporters, I can't wait. It will be an amazing feeling."</p><p>The rapid center-forward is Arsenal's sixth senior signing of the summer. Arteta and new sporting director Andrea Berta also completed deals for winger <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///epl/players/162571" href="https://thescore.com/epl/players/162571">Noni Madueke</a>, midfielders <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///natleaguefnl/players/159718" href="https://thescore.com/natleaguefnl/players/159718">Martin Zubimendi</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///intfr/players/101309" href="https://thescore.com/intfr/players/101309">Christian Norgaard</a>, defender <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///liga/players/185090" href="https://thescore.com/liga/players/185090">Cristhian Mosquera</a>, and goalkeeper <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///espcr/players/44064" href="https://thescore.com/espcr/players/44064">Kepa Arrizabalaga</a>.</p>
