The Boston Red Sox are optioning infielder Kristian Campbell to Triple-A, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Campbell is being demoted because outfielder Wilyer Abreu will be activated from the 10-day injured list, according to Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald. Abreu has been sidelined with an oblique strain.

The 22-year-old Campbell signed an eight-year, $60-million contract in early April. He's hit six homers with 21 RBIs and a .664 OPS over 67 games during his rookie season. The former blue-chip prospect made the team following a strong showing in spring training after playing in 137 minor-league contests, including just 19 games in Triple-A in 2024.

It's the latest move by a Red Sox club that's been making news this past week following the shocking trade of All-Star slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.
