The Kansas City Royals would like to acquire an outfielder before the July 31 trade deadline and have their sights set on a two-time All-Star.

Kansas City is interested in Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds, sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

Royals outfielders have combined for the lowest fWAR in the majors while posting a league-worst .203 batting average with just nine home runs. Kyle Isbel, who has three of those nine homers to go along with a .620 OPS, has been Kansas City's most productive outfielder at the plate.

Reynolds is in the midst of a down year, slashing .237/.301/.393 with 10 homers and 45 RBIs for the last-place Pirates, but his career numbers are far better.

Reynolds' career stats

SEASON PA HR RBI OPS fWAR
2019 546 16 68 .880 3.7
2020 208 7 19 .632 0.3

2022 614 27 62 .807 2.8
2023 640 24 84 .790 2.1
2024 692 24 88 .791 2.1

The 30-year-old Maryland native is under contract until 2031 after inking an eight-year, $106.75-million deal with the Pirates in April 2023.
