The Texas Rangers acquired catcher Logan O'Hoppe and right-hander Chase Silseth from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for infield prospect Angel Arredondo, the teams announced Wednesday.
Texas is optioning O'Hoppe to Triple-A Round Rock, according to Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.
O'Hoppe adds more catching depth to a Texas squad that's been weak at the position. The Rangers' two Opening Day backstops, Kyle Higashioka and Danny Jansen, are both injured. Elias Díaz started behind the plate Wednesday in Texas' win over Tampa Bay.
O'Hoppe, 26, has appeared in just 75 games this season because of a broken wrist. He's slashing a career-worst .209/.271/.295 with four homers and 23 RBIs over 256 plate appearances. He's also been negative defensively. However, O'Hoppe has shown some pop during his five-year career. He hit 20 homers in 2024 and averaged 18 long balls a year during his first three full MLB seasons.
The New York native also projects to be catching for the Rangers long term, as he's arbitration-eligible through 2028. He's earning $2.625 million this season.
"I thought, in his case, the best thing for him would be a change of scenery," Angels interim general manager John Mozeliak said of O'Hoppe, according to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com.
Silseth, 26, owns a 2.72 ERA, 3.42 FIP, and 1.41 WHIP along with 42 strikeouts and just three homers allowed in 39 2/3 innings for the Angels this season. He's striking out nearly 11 batters per nine innings but also has a career-high 5.0 BB/9 rate.
Like O'Hoppe, Silseth is under team control for the foreseeable future, as he won't become eligible for arbitration until 2028.
For the AL-worst Angels, the trade represents the first of what's expected to be many deals in a summer fire sale. The Halos are headed toward an 11th straight losing season, having made the playoffs just once since 2009.
“As we enter this trading period, one of the things we are focused on is understanding change," Mozeliak said, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. "Clearly, where the Angels are right now, we need to do some things differently."
Arredondo, 19, was not ranked among the Rangers' top 30 prospects prior to the trade. Originally signed by Texas out of his native Mexico in 2024, Arredondo hit .243/.371/.392 with eight homers, 44 RBIs, and three steals in 85 games at Low-A Hickory this year. He's primarily played third base in 2026, but he also has experience at shortstop and second.
"In our system, he's probably in the top 10 prospects," Mozeliak said while citing Arredondo's "plus bat-to-ball skill" and strong defense, per Fletcher. "I know he wasn't getting a lot of third-party recognition in this process, but I do think he's a better player than he's getting recognized for."
After trading O'Hoppe, the Angels reinstated veteran catcher Travis d'Arnaud from the injured list.
The Rangers - who sit 1.5 games up on the Houston Astros in the AL West - transferred both Jansen and right-hander Jose Corniell to the 60-day IL to open 40-man roster spots for their new additions.
