Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday to repair a damaged UCL in his right elbow, the team announced Thursday.
Greene previously underwent Tommy John in 2019 before he broke into the major leagues.
The surgery ends the right-hander's 2026 season and will sideline him for most, if not all, of 2027, the club added.
The Reds announced Friday that Greene was set to have elbow surgery, but it wasn't clear what type of procedure would be performed until the operation started.
Greene struggled with a 6.83 ERA in five starts in 2026. He was excellent in 2024, posting a 2.75 ERA across a career-high 150 1/3 innings and finishing eighth in NL Cy Young voting. He followed that up with a strong although injury-plagued 2025 campaign where he registered a 2.76 ERA in 107 2/3 innings.
The 27-year-old was reportedly a candidate to be dealt ahead of the trade deadline. However, he made his final start of the season July 31 and was placed on the IL five days later with elbow soreness.
The Reds selected Greene second overall in the 2017 MLB Draft.
