Caminero's walk-off HR clinches playoff spot for Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays are heading back to the postseason thanks to Junior Caminero, who crushed a walk-off home run in the ninth inning to defeat the Houston Astros 3-1 on Friday.

Tampa Bay secured its first playoff berth since 2023 with the victory.

Caminero's 40th homer of the season was his first career walk-off hit, and it followed an impressive outing from Drew Rasmussen, who allowed one earned run over seven innings.

The All-Star third baseman also became the first Rays player with multiple 40-homer seasons, and the second player in the modern era with back-to-back 40-homer campaigns in his age-22-or-younger seasons, according to the Rays.

"We're going to enjoy this, we're going to have a lot of fun, we're going to enjoy the moment, but the job is not finished. We're going to win the division," Caminero said before yelling, "Tampa, this is for you."

It's been a resurgent campaign for the Rays under manager Kevin Cash, with Tampa Bay playing well in every aspect.

The Rays' lineup has produced the fifth-most runs in the American League thanks to contributions from Caminero, as well as Chandler Simpson and Yandy Diaz, who sit second and third respectively for the AL batting crown. Tampa also ranks second in the majors in defensive runs saved and sits third in steals.

Tampa Bay's starting pitching has also been tremendous. Rasmussen and Nick Martinez have anchored a starting staff that sits third in the AL in ERA, while the bullpen has been led by AL saves leader Bryan Baker.

The Rays have 15 games left to lock down their first division title since 2021. Four of those games come against the New York Yankees between Sept. 22 - 24.
