Blue Jays DFA Sánchez, call up Martin after 12 years in minors

The Toronto Blue Jays designated outfielder Jesús Sánchez for assignment, the club announced Friday.

Sánchez hit eight homers with 35 RBIs and a .734 OPS across 99 games this season. However, the 28-year-old has been one of the worst defenders in baseball, posting minus-8 outs above average.

Toronto acquired Sánchez from the Houston Astros for outfielder Joey Loperfido in February.

In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays also selected the contract of outfielder Rudy Martin Jr., promoting the 30-year-old to the majors for the first time after 12 years in the minors. The Kansas City Royals originally picked him in the 25th round of the 2014 draft.

Martin has 11 homers with 40 RBIs, 45 stolen bases, and an .816 OPS over 91 games between Double-A and Triple-A in 2026.
