Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green believes the NBA should abolish the salary cap if it doesn't lay the hammer down on the Los Angeles Clippers following another reported undisclosed sponsorship deal involving Kawhi Leonard.
Leonard apparently had a deal with video board company Daktronics, which the Clippers utilized in the construction of the Intuit Dome. A high-level arena employee described the previously unknown contract as "1,000% a way to circumvent the salary cap."
"If the punishments aren't steep, everybody should do it," Green said Thursday on "The Draymond Green Show." "If it's just gonna be a slap on the wrist, then everybody should do it and every player should be trying to do it."
He added: "I think this raises the question about the salary cap. We're playing in a league where a team just sold for $12.5 billion."
Green went on to say: "Let the punishment be getting rid of the salary cap. If you can make $2.5 billion on a sale in a year, what are we doing with the salary cap anyway?"
The NBA's investigation into the Clippers for allegedly circumventing the salary cap to pay Leonard extra money has yet to be completed. Both Leonard and the Clippers have denied allegations that he had a $28-million "no-show" endorsement deal with Aspiration, a now-defunct green banking company.
The law firm conducting the league's probe reportedly found a second sponsorship deal linked to Leonard.
A blockbuster deal that would send Leonard to the Toronto Raptors for a package including Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and draft compensation is on hold until the NBA finishes its investigation.
