Ken Griffey shares advice he gave Bronny: 'Relax, enjoy it, be you'
Hall of Fame outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. can relate to the pressure Bronny James is experiencing in his first season in the NBA.
Griffey and his dad, Ken Griffey Sr., made history in 1990 by becoming the first father and son to play on the same MLB team. With James and his father, LeBron James, in the same position on the Los Angeles Lakers, Griffey Jr. offered the rookie some advice.
"I did tell Bronny, just, 'Hey, relax, enjoy it, be you. You're not gonna be him. Nobody's him,'" the younger Griffey said on the "Nightcap" podcast with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson. "And the same thing I feel like my dad told me when I got there, he said, 'This is your team, I'm just here.' And he was dad at the house and team(mate) at the ballpark."
The Griffeys were both in attendance for the Lakers' season opener on Oct. 22, when Bronny and LeBron became the first father-son duo in NBA history to play together in a regular season game.
Bronny, the No. 55 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, has appeared in three games for the Lakers so far, averaging 0.7 points, 0.7 assists, and 0.3 rebounds in 2.7 minutes.
