Tyreek: 'Hoping to prove myself' after disappointing season
Star receiver Tyreek Hill is out to show he can be a reliable option for the Miami Dolphins following a disappointing and frustrating end to last season.
"I'm hoping to prove myself and prove to my teammates that I'm still one of them ones," Hill told reporters Wednesday, including The South Florida Sun Sentinel's Chris Perkins.
Hill reiterated his goal of surpassing 2,000 receiving yards in a season. He came very close in 2022, racking up 1,710 on 119 receptions for seven touchdowns. He then led the NFL with 1,799 yards and 13 scores in 2023.
The five-time first-team All-Pro saw his stats decline in 2024. Hill's 81 catches for 959 yards and six scores were both his lowest marks since his 2019 season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He failed to make the Pro Bowl for the first time in his nine-year career.
Hill was noticeably upset at the end of last season. He declared he was "out" following Miami's loss to the New York Jets in the regular-season finale but apologized and backtracked in February. The veteran is now "looking to move forward."
He was honest when asked whether he should remain a team captain after last season's controversy.
"I don't feel I deserve it," Hill said, per the Miami Herald's Omar Kelly. "If I didn't get it I wouldn't sweat it because I put myself in that position."
Hill insisted that, starting with OTAs and continuing into training camp, he needs to demonstrate to teammates, coaches, and himself that he's capable of more.
"I've got to show up different," he said. "The mindset has got to be different."
Hill shared he's slimmed down from 197 to 183 pounds in an effort to improve his endurance next season, according to Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post. He's still working his way back into form after undergoing a second offseason wrist surgery earlier this month.
