Texans' Ryans: Stroud 'has to do a better job of running the offense'
Head coach DeMeco Ryans pointed some of the blame at his young quarterback for the Houston Texans' offensive struggles this year.
"C.J. (Stroud) has to do a better job of running the offense," Ryans said Tuesday after losing 29-17 to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football, according to KPRC 2 Houston's Aaron Wilson.
"Not about one person, it's everybody collectively. He falls under that category as well."
Falling to 2-4 on the season, the Texans mustered only 254 yards of offense against the Seahawks and punted on their first five drives of the game. Stroud completed less than 50% of his throws for 229 yards and finished with a 25.2 quarterback rating.
Houston fired offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik in January after ranking 19th in points per contest last season. Ryans hired Nick Caley to spark an improvement, but the early results have underwhelmed. Caley's offense sits 26th in success rate heading into Week 8, according to Ben Baldwin's database.
Despite the unit's struggles, Ryans said he doesn't plan to make a change at offensive coordinator.
"We're pressing forward with everybody that we have," Ryans told reporters Tuesday, according to ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime. "We're collectively all in this together."
He added: "It all starts with me. So, you guys want to point the finger at somebody, put it on me. That's my job, and ultimately, it's my job to get it fixed. So that's how it'll be, but we're rolling on what we have, and we got to just all do better. Got to coach you better. We got to play better.
Houston will look to rebound Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.
