Jameis Winston is savoring the opportunity to be a starting quarterback again following New York Giants passer Jaxson Dart's season-ending knee injury.
"This is what I've always dreamed of, to be a starting quarterback," Winston said Wednesday. "Obviously, my respects and gratitude is just going to be with Jaxson, but at the same time, this is what I dream of. I dream of being what I am right now and executing at a high level."
Dart suffered a serious knee injury in Monday night's loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He reportedly damaged his MCL, PCL, and meniscus. After weighing multiple opinions, the Giants confirmed Wednesday that the passer would undergo season-ending surgery, though he could potentially return if the club makes the playoffs.
Winston came in for Dart after the injury, completing 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and an interception. He started two games for the Giants last year, though he went 0-2 with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The 32-year-old says he's "very confident" in his ability to lead the Giants to victories.
A former No. 1 overall pick, Winston has started 89 games across his stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, Cleveland Browns, and Giants. He led the league in passing with 5,109 yards in 2019, though he also threw a NFL-high 30 interceptions in addition to 33 touchdowns.
