New England Patriots receiver A.J. Brown says his status remains "up in the air" ahead of Sunday's game against the New York Jets, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.
Although Brown "felt pretty good" returning to practice this week after suffering a high ankle sprain in New England's season opener, he intends to see how his ankle responds following Thursday's physical practice.
"Obviously it's going to be a coach (Mike) Vrabel decision to see where I'm at and make the better decision for the long haul, not just for temporarily," Brown added.
The Patriots listed the 29-year-old as a limited participant in Wednesday's and Thursday's on-field sessions.
New England acquired Brown in an offseason trade with the Philadelphia Eagles in hopes that the three-time Pro Bowler can become the top receiving target for rising quarterback Drake Maye.
Brown made three catches for 26 yards in the Patriots' Week 1 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks before exiting due to the ankle injury. New England later placed him on injured reserve, making him eligible to return in Week 6.
"It felt good just to be back on the grass practicing. Working on the side is a little boring," Brown said.
If Brown indeed returns Sunday, his presence would boost a Patriots offense that's recently suffered additional key injuries. Left tackle Will Campbell is considered week-to-week after sustaining a knee ailment in last week's win over the Las Vegas Raiders. New England also placed receiver Mack Hollins, who's helped fill in for Brown, on IR after he sustained a calf issue in Week 5.
The Patriots (3-2) will enter Sunday's contest against the Jets (2-3) on a two-game win streak.
