The Edmonton Oilers are signing defenseman Connor Murphy to a five-year contract extension worth $4.1 million per season, the team announced Monday.
Murphy was scheduled to reach unrestricted free agency July 1. The Oilers acquired him from the Chicago Blackhawks prior to this past season's trade deadline for a second-round pick in 2028.
He notched four points in 20 games after the trade and added three points in the playoffs as the Oilers were eliminated by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round.
Murphy will remain part of an Edmonton defensive corps that has Evan Bouchard, Mattias Ekholm, Jake Walman, Darnell Nurse, and Ty Emberson signed for next season. Nurse reportedly requested a trade earlier in June.
The Oilers have approximately $7.4 million in cap space after signing Murphy, according to PuckPedia. They can gain an extra $9.25 million by trading Nurse without any salary retention.
