Calgary Flames icon Jarome Iginla is "battling some health issues," he told Sportsnet's Eric Francis.
"Some neurological issues. I'm not entirely sure what it is; it may be from metal toxins from reaction to the cobalt hip," Iginla said.
Iginla, 49, had hip replacement surgery a few years ago. He experienced complications afterward, and the medications he's taken as a result have impacted his energy, weight, and speech.
He said he's spent more than a year undergoing tests and consulting medical professionals.
"I need more time to figure it all out, but I'm still hopeful that I will recover fully," Iginla said. "Things are slowly getting under control, thanks be to God."
Fans voiced concern about Iginla's health after his appearance in the docuseries "Hometown Giants," which followed the WHL's Vancouver Giants and featured his youngest son, Joe.
Jarome's daughter, Jade, was drafted this summer by PWHL Hamilton. His son Tij was selected sixth overall by the Utah Mammoth in 2024, while the Flames drafted Joe in June.
Jarome is the Flames' all-time leading scorer in games played, goals, and points. He officially retired in 2018 after 20 NHL seasons. Iginla was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2020.
