Canadian judoka Christa Deguchi claimed her country's first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Games by defeating South Korea's Huh Mi-mi in the women's 57kg final on Monday.
The win came in dramatic fashion, with neither combatant scoring a point in the match before Huh was disqualified in the golden score period for a third shido (penalty) following a false attack.
Deguchi also went the distance in a scoreless semifinal against home favorite Sarah Leonie Cysique of France, with the Canadian World No. 1 also winning that match on a decisive third shido by her opponent.
In both the final and semifinal, Deguchi finished with two shidos.
It's Canada's first ever gold medal in judo.
