Egypt outlasts Australia in shootout for historic World Cup knockout win

Egypt defeated Australia 4-2 on penalties to advance to the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.

Hossam Abdelmaguid delivered the winning spot-kick to give the Pharaohs their first-ever knockout victory at the World Cup.

Star forward Mohamed Salah successfully converted a Panenka in the shootout, while Aussie defenders Harry Souttar - who took the first penalty - and Lucas Herrington missed with their efforts.

The team shooting first has now won just two of the last 14 World Cup penalty shootouts.

Egypt will meet either reigning world champion Argentina or Cape Verde in the round of 16.

Friday's match finished tied at one apiece after 120 minutes.

Emam Ashour opened the scoring for Egypt with a 13th-minute header in Dallas, but the Socceroos posed more of a threat in the second half and equalized when Mohamed Hany redirected a free-kick into his own net in the 55th minute. It was Hany's second own goal of the tournament.

Neither side could break the deadlock from there.

Egypt came closest in second-half stoppage time, but Aussie goalkeeper Patrick Beach pulled off a sensational one-handed save to deny a point-blank header from Ramy Rabia.

Beach was then substituted in the 119th minute for veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, but the 34-year-old was unable to save any of the Egyptian spot-kicks as Salah and Co. kept their tournament going.

Ryan technically didn't touch the ball after coming into the match.
