Milan Cortina medal table: Norway owns podium, USA edges out Italy
That's a wrap.
The United States' thrilling overtime victory against Canada in the men's hockey final saw the last remaining medals handed out at Milan Cortina 2026.
That triumph capped a record-breaking Games for the Americans, who set a new national benchmark with 12 gold medals at a single Winter Olympics. They finished with 33 overall.
That impressive total - an improvement on the 25 medals won in Beijing - wasn't enough for top spot in the final table, though.
That belonged to Norway, which blew away the field with 18 golds and 41 total podium finishes. Cross-country skiing superstar Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo was responsible for six of those gold medals, setting a new Winter Olympic record in the process. Not including his own country, the 29-year-old, known as "King Klaebo" for obvious reasons, captured more gold medals on his own than all but six nations that took part in the 2026 Games.
Total medal standings
This is the third consecutive Winter Olympics where Norway finished with the most total medals. The Norwegians also went home with the most golds four years ago in Beijing.
Host nation Italy enjoyed its best-ever Winter Olympics with 30 total medals, but couldn't hold off the surging Americans, who recovered from a slow start and secured instantly iconic golds in both men's and women's hockey.
Canada, which had to settle for silver in both those events, had to wait until Day 9 of competition to secure a gold medal and hear its national anthem played, but ultimately finished with five golds, including in men's curling.
The Canadians took a step back from their medal haul in Beijing, where they finished with 26 total podium spots.
Other notable accomplishments include the Netherlands' 10 gold medals - all of which came in speedskating (five in long track, five in short track) where the Dutch always thrive - and Lucas Pinheiro Braathen of Brazil winning the giant slalom to give South America its first-ever gold medal at the Winter Olympics.
The 2030 Winter Olympics will take place in the French Alps.
