Cleveland Guardians star third baseman José Ramírez sustained a hamate bone fracture in his left wrist and will be placed on the injured list, the team announced, according to Zack Meisel of The Athletic.
Ramírez exited Saturday's 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers in the sixth inning after suffering the injury leading off in the fifth.
"He had a similar injury, I think, to his right hand a few years ago," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said postgame, according to Tom Withers of The Associated Press. "He tried to go back out. He knew the position we were in, grabbed his glove, and said, 'Maybe I can still play defense,' but he couldn’t squeeze his glove."
The four-time AL MVP finalist has appeared in 72 games this season, leading the majors.
Ramírez has been incredibly durable over his 14-year career, logging at least 152 contests per season eight times since 2016. The only exceptions were 2019 (129 games) and the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.
The seven-time All-Star has 10 homers, 33 RBIs, 24 stolen bases, and a .757 OPS this season.
The Guardians also lost outfielders Chase DeLauter and Angel Martínez to injuries during Saturday's game. DeLauter departed with a bruised right rib cage following a collision with the outfield wall, while Martínez left after he bruised his left foot fouling a pitch off it.
