Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson wasn't pleased with the San Diego Padres, believing he was intentionally hit by a pitch in the ninth inning of Saturday's game.

The trouble started in the fifth inning when Baltimore's Trey Gibson hit Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts in the helmet with a 93-mph sinker. Bogaerts remained in the game to run the bases but was later removed.

Then, with two out in the ninth inning and the Padres ahead 9-3, Ron Marinaccio plunked Henderson. Both Marinaccio and Padres manager Craig Stammen were ejected, leaving Adrian Morejon to close out San Diego's victory.

Henderson said he was shocked by the ninth-inning HBP, saying he thought the feud had ended after Bradgley Rodriguez missed with two inside pitches in the seventh.

"I guess they were trying to make up for missing," Henderson said, according to Jacob Calvin Meyer of the Baltimore Sun. "They had their two opportunities in my previous at-bat and missed, so I thought that should have been the end of it. But I guess they were trying to get payback, so I guess we're even now."

Marinaccio and Stammen insisted that Henderson's hit-by-pitch was unintentional. Stammen also expressed frustration that umpires were quick to eject his pitcher without issuing any warnings.

"We need to pitch him (Henderson) inside. If he gets extended, he's gonna do what he did yesterday," Stammen said, per 93.7 The Fan. "That's part of pitching, to be able to pitch inside, pitch between the plate and the body. It hit him, and I don't know why they tossed (Marinaccio). I guess maybe because Bogey got hit. It's just frustrating that they would make a decision that quick."

Orioles skipper Craig Albernaz took a more old-school approach to the situation.

"I'm not saying the ball to Gunnar was on purpose, but it was done the right way," Albernaz said, according to Meyer. "And that's why there were no gripes from us, and Gunnar was fine with it and just took it to first base."

Although the benches didn't clear, both teams felt some anger over the events. Henderson said he expected to be targeted by the Padres after Bogaerts was beaned, but he added that San Diego shouldn't have been given a second chance to throw at him.

"You have an idea because it's just how it is," Henderson said. "We hit somebody of theirs, and obviously weren't trying to, but it is what it is. And yeah, you had your opportunity to get it back, and they did and missed, so that should have been it."

Stammen said the team removed Bogaerts from the game as a precaution and that he'll be re-evaluated before Sunday's series finale at Camden Yards.
