Chicago qualified for the playoffs for the second straight year. The last time the team made back-to-back postseason trips was in four consecutive seasons between 2015-18.
The Cubs clinched just minutes after the White Sox also secured a playoff spot, marking the first time both Chicago teams are in the postseason since 2020 and only the fourth instance ever, dating back to 1906.
Pete Crow-Armstrong, the heavy NL MVP favorite, became the seventh player in MLB history to reach the 40-40 club during the Cubs' victory.
The Cubs are fighting with the San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies for the NL's top wild-card spot. Chicago and San Diego currently have 88 wins, while Philadelphia has 87. The club that finishes in the third wild-card spot will likely take on the NL East champion Atlanta Braves.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are on the fringe of the hunt, three games behind the Phillies for the last playoff spot.
