Report: Stafford plans to return to Rams, likely needs new deal
Quarterback Matthew Stafford plans to play for the Los Angeles Rams again in 2025, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
However, the Rams will likely need to rework the veteran's deal, notes Rapoport. The passer said he was unsure about his NFL future Jan. 19 after a divisional-round loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and Los Angeles head coach Sean McVay later said he hoped to hear his QB's final decision soon.
Stafford - who signed a four-year, $160-million extension in 2022 - revised his contract with L.A. prior to the 2024 season, effectively turning it into a one-year, $40-million deal while giving up 2025 guarantees. The 36-year-old's current contract only includes a $4-million signing bonus due on the third day of the new league year, which begins March 12.
Stafford has spent the past four seasons with the Rams and helped them win the Super Bowl in his first year after being traded from the Detroit Lions for Jared Goff.
Stafford appeared in 16 games in 2024, completing 65.8% of his passes for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns against eight interceptions. The two-time Pro Bowler has thrown 95 TDs to 44 INTs while posting a 34-23 regular-season record as a starter in L.A. He's also 5-2 in his three trips to the playoffs with the club.
