Raiders fire Chip Kelly as OC after 11 games
The Las Vegas Raiders fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly on Sunday, the team announced.
The Raiders made Kelly the NFL's highest-paid coordinator in February, adding him to Pete Carroll's new coaching staff after Kelly enjoyed a successful stint as Ohio State's OC.
Quarterbacks coach Greg Olson was named interim offensive coordinator Monday, per The Las Vegas Review-Journal's Vincent Bonsignore. Olson, 62, previously served as the Raiders' offensive play-caller from 2013-14 on Dennis Allen's staff and held the same role under Jon Gruden from 2018 to 2021.
Las Vegas dismissed the 61-year-old Kelly hours after a 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns that dropped Las Vegas to 2-9. It was the team's third straight game scoring 16 points or fewer.
The Raiders entered the season with high expectations for their offense after hiring Kelly, drafting running back Ashton Jeanty, and trading for quarterback Geno Smith. However, the club has averaged 4.7 yards per play this year, the third-worst mark in the league.
"I am grateful for the opportunity with the Raiders," Kelly told Fox Sports' Jay Glazer. "(The) bottom line in this league, you have to win. I really loved those players. I'm a huge Geno Smith fan. That was one of the best parts of this experience for me, working with Geno and those guys every day. But hey, we gotta win. I get it."
Carroll also fired special teams coordinator Tom McMahon in November. In 14 seasons as Seattle Seahawks head coach, Carroll didn't fire any coordinators, notes NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
