The New York Jets recently hosted veteran Russell Wilson for a visit and are considering him as a possible backup to Geno Smith, a source told Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic.

However, a deal between the sides isn't imminent, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

The Jets presented Smith with various backup options, and he was excited about the possibility of Wilson joining the team, Rosenblatt adds. The two passers reportedly spoke before the draft, and the organization scheduled Wilson's visit for this past Monday.

Wilson and Smith were teammates on the Seattle Seahawks from 2019 to 2021, though Wilson was the starter and Smith was the backup. The Seahawks traded Wilson after the 2021 season and handed the starting role to Smith.

The Jets would be Wilson's fourth team in five years if he signs with them. After leaving Seattle, Wilson played two seasons with the Denver Broncos and one with the Pittsburgh Steelers before spending last year with the New York Giants.

Wilson's play has declined in that span, as the 37-year-old has posted a 17-27 record since his tenure with the Seahawks.

New York reunited with Smith in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this offseason. Drafted by the Jets in the second round in 2013, Smith went 2-13 with 19 touchdowns and a league-high 17 interceptions in 2025.
