Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes remains on track to start the team's season-opening matchup against the Denver Broncos on Monday, head coach Andy Reid said.
"Pretty good chance that Patrick will go ahead and start," Reid said Tuesday, according to Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star.
Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL in December, but the two-time MVP has recovered well this offseason.
Kansas City lost its final six games of the 2025 season, including Mahomes' last three appearances, and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
Mahomes has established a Hall of Fame resume as he prepares for his ninth season. He's led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl titles and has earned three Super Bowl MVPs.
Kansas City is hopeful that he'll bounce back after posting a 6-8 mark as a starter in 2025. Mahomes passed for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions last year. He added a career-high 422 rushing yards and another five scores.
Justin Fields and rookie Garrett Nussmeier will serve as Mahomes' backups to begin the season.
The Chiefs host the Denver Broncos in their home opener on Monday Night Football.
