Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton announced Thursday that he's taking over offensive play-calling duties from coordinator Davis Webb ahead of Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
"We'll make a change offensively. I'll call the plays," Payton told reporters, including The Denver Post's Parker Gabriel.
Payton said he met with Webb and Broncos players on Monday prior to making the change.
"Everyone's disappointed in the unit itself. We feel like there's more there," Payton added.
Webb has been calling Denver's plays after being promoted to offensive coordinator in the offseason. He will continue to have a significant game-planning and game-day role, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
"I've done this long enough where I know when I have a future head coach, and he's going to be one," Payton said about Webb.
The Broncos rank 27th in the NFL in scoring and total yards. Denver is coming off a 24-14 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Payton called plays during the 2025 campaign in which the Broncos went 14-3 and won the AFC West. They lost to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.
The 62-year-old Payton recently expressed concern about the offense's attention to detail.
"I think our focus needs to be more on the specific and the detail of each play regardless (of who's calling the plays)," Payton said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Jeff Legwold. "I think Davis is very fast, very quick, and understands what we're doing. I think that the most important job I have is really evaluating the whys. I think collectively, we all, after a game, and after a four-game sample size, certainly this isn't championship football, what we see. How quickly can we correct those things?"
Webb is a former quarterback who has been with the Broncos as a coach since 2023. The 31-year-old started as a quarterbacks coach and became the offensive pass game coordinator in 2025 before his promotion to offensive coordinator.
