Memphis' Silverfield takes shot at Georgia for driving arrests
Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield threw some shade at Georgia for the Bulldogs' off-field incidents while teaching his team about performance and accountability.
Silverfield said he begins his weekly meetings with his team with a "not our standard" segment, identifying mistakes made on the field and away from it.
"Generally, on a Sunday afternoon when we meet with the team, we do two things," Silverfield said Monday on his radio show, per the Commercial Appeal's Jonah Dylan. "We always start off with 'not our standard,' always start out with a negative. And the 'not our standard' is: 'Georgia wide receiver arrested for driving 900 miles per hour over the speed limit.' That's a weekly occurrence. So, that's one we'll show."
Then-Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing after offensive lineman Devin Willock and support staffer Chandler LeCroy were killed in a 2023 crash. Since the crash, Georgia football players and support staff have been charged in at least 32 speeding, reckless driving, or racing incidents, according to the Athens Banner-Herald's Marc Weiszer.
Wideout Nitro Tuggle was arrested in March for reckless driving and speeding. He subsequently entered the transfer portal and joined Purdue. In the same month, offensive lineman Marques Easley was charged with reckless conduct and one count of reckless driving after crashing his car into the front of an apartment complex. He later also transferred to Purdue.
The Tigers posted back-to-back double-digit winning campaigns in 2023 and 2024 under Silverfield. Memphis will look to improve to 4-0 on the season Saturday against Arkansas.
