Diggs excited to play with Maye: People say he acts like Allen
Stefon Diggs said he can't wait to team up with promising quarterback Drake Maye after recently signing a three-year contract with the New England Patriots.
"It's crazy because, when you ask around, people say he acts a lot like Josh (Allen). And that was my guy," Diggs said Friday during his introductory press conference, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.
Diggs played with Allen - a superstar dual-threat QB and reigning NFL MVP - from 2020-23 on the Buffalo Bills, forming one of the league's best duos. The wideout averaged 111 catches, 1,343 yards, and nine touchdowns while earning four Pro Bowl berths in as many seasons with the Bills, who traded him to the Houston Texans in 2024.
Maye - the 2024 third overall pick - took over as QB1 in New England during his rookie season and flashed his potential, finishing the year with a 66.6% completion rate and 17 total touchdowns against 10 interceptions. He made his first NFL start against Diggs' Texans, passing for three TDs to two INTs.
"We played (Maye) last year, and he showed a lot of fight," Diggs said. "He has that fiery quarterback 'I want to win' mindset. So that's something I get excited about and love to be around."
Diggs was on track to post his seventh straight 1,000-yard season last year in Houston before a torn ACL prematurely ended his campaign. He finished with 496 yards and three TDs on 47 receptions in eight games.
The 31-year-old, who's expected to be available for the 2025 season opener, will reportedly earn $69 million over three years with the Patriots.
"I kind of figured (the contract) was going to be around that area, considering I'm coming off the injury, but also the fact that I'm one of the only receivers that had six 1,000-yard seasons consecutively," Diggs explained, adding, "My resume probably speaks for itself."
The Patriots hired Mike Vrabel as head coach this offseason and have addressed their biggest needs to upgrade Maye's supporting cast. In addition to Diggs, New England signed offensive linemen Garrett Bradbury and Morgan Moses, among others. The team also owns the No. 4 pick in the 2025 draft.
