Report: Steelers to bolster backfield with Dowdle
The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing former Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle, sources told The Athletic's Dianna Russini.
Dowdle gives Jaylen Warren a new running mate in the Steelers' backfield after the franchise reportedly lost Kenneth Gainwell in free agency to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Dowdle has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of the last two seasons. He began his career as a backup for the Dallas Cowboys before rushing for 1,079 yards in 2024. He signed with the Panthers last offseason and recorded 1,076 yards.
Warren led the Steelers in rushing last season with 958 yards and six touchdowns.
Pittsburgh has now added Dowdle, cornerback Jamel Dean, and wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. via trade since Monday's negotiating window opened. The Steelers have yet to address the quarterback position with the future of 2025 starter Aaron Rodgers uncertain. Rodgers is a free agent but hasn't determined his plans for 2026.
